TOUR BROCHURE

ENGLAND 2014: with Frank Ticheli 2

Dear Dr. Ticheli

I wish to invite you to consider staging the 2014 Frank Ticheli International Festival as a featured event of the Harrogate International Festivals.

The Festival presents the best of England and the world’s music and culture annually and is recognised as the “North of England’s leading arts Festival” by The Times.

We would be honoured to welcome you and your ensembles, both individually and as the combined festival ensemble, as one of our major cultural events which would feature alongside our traditional programmes of literature, science and music with previous artists including Wynton Marsalis, BB King, Mariza & Youssou N’Dour alongside traditional classical ensembles such as Alfred Brendel, Arcadia Volodos and the world’s leading classical orchestras.

You may also be interested to know that our Patron is HRH Prince Charles and our President is Dame Fanny Waterman, with whom we have a very close working partnership.

Please know you and your musicians will be assured of a warm welcome, an enthusiastic audience, opportunities for local musicians to perform in the combined gala concert and an outstanding range of

venue choices such as the beautifully restored Frank Matcham building; the Royal Hall & Ripon Cathedral whose medieval wood carvings in the choir stalls, inspired Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland.http://www.royalhall.co.uk/Media-Centre/Virtual-Tour.aspx

Harrogate as a destination boasts an historic reputation as Europe’s premier spa resort and is surrounded by stunning countryside, bustling market towns, history, culture and adventure and is the ideal focus for a high profile cultural and music season within the UK.

Yours sincerely,

Sharon CanavarChief ExecutiveHarrogate International Festivalswww.harrogate-festival.org.uk

FRANK TICHELIFrank Ticheli’s music has been described as being “optimistic and thoughtful” (Los Angeles Times), “lean and muscular” (New York Times), “brilliantly effective” (Miami Herald) and “powerful, deeply felt crafted with impressive flair and an ear for striking instrumental colors” (South Florida Sun-Sentinel). Ticheli (b. 1958) joined the faculty of the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music in 1991, where he is Professor of Composition. From 1991 to 1998, Ticheli was Composer in Residence of the Pacific Symphony, and he still enjoys a close working relationship with that

orchestra and their music director, Carl St. Clair.

Ticheli is well known for his works for concert band, many of which have become standards in the repertoire. In addition to composing, he has appeared as guest conductor of his music at Carnegie Hall, at many American universities and music festivals, and in cities throughout the world, including Beijing and Shanghai, London and Manchester, Rome, Singapore, Schladming (Austria), and numerous cities in Japan.

Ticheli is currently composing THE SHORE, a choral symphony for the Pacific Chorale and Pacific Symphony. Their recording of the symphony will be released in 2014 on a Delos label CD featuring all of Ticheli’s choral works. Other all-Ticheli recordings are being released by the Dallas Wind Symphony (Reference) and Virginia Symphony (Naxos).

Ticheli is the winner of the 2006 NBA/William D. Revelli Memorial Band Composition Contest for his Symphony No. 2. Other awards for his music include three awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Walter Beeler Memorial Prize, and First Prize awards in the Texas Sesquicentennial Orchestral Composition Competition, Britten-on-the-Bay Choral Composition Contest, and Virginia CBDNA Symposium for New Band Music. He is a national honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and he was named by the American School Band Directors Association as the 2009 recipient of the A. Austin Harding Award, bestowed to individuals “who have made exceptional contributions to the school band movement in America.”

Frank Ticheli received his doctoral and masters degrees in composition from The University of Michigan. His works are published by Manhattan Beach, Southern, Hinshaw, and Encore Music, and are recorded on the labels of Albany, Chandos, Clarion, Delos, Klavier, Koch International, Mark Custom, Naxos, and Reference Recordings.3 Harrogate International Festivals
