:: Route description Starting point of the tour is in Sirmione, one of the best- known places on Lake Garda. Sirmione can not only be reached by car but also by ferry. Arriving there from the wa- ter is an impressive experience, even though one has to push ones bike through the old town. If you get there by car, you start the route from the car parks in Colombare or Lugana, which form part of Sirmione. On minor roads the cycling tour leads from Sirmione towards the Torre di San Martino. Already from a distance you can make out the tower, which was constructed as a memorial of the battle of Solferino. The victory over the Austrians in 1859 laid the foundation to a unified Italian state – the horrendous events of the battle were moreover the initial spark for the foundation of the International Red Cross. For us the tower is an excellent landmark and a first resting place in the shade. From the tower the route takes us to the quiet village of Pozzolengo with its rather southern atmos- phere and then back through countryside which is characte- rized by vineyards and surprisingly unspoilt. When we get to Punta Gro we get back to the cycle path along the lakeshore, which takes us to Sirmione again. On this last stretch of the tour there are some good possibilities for taking a dip into the lake.
