Visit our Web Site www.azasa.org And click on Umpires Info and take the 2014 Umpire Exam. Instant results will be provided along with instructions as to the submission of the correct answers and rule reference back to your District UIC for those questions missed. The Exam is open book and consists of 50 or 58 Questions. If you work FP only, answer questions 1‐50. If you work SP only, answer questions 1‐42 and questions 51‐58. If you work both FP & SP answer all 58 questions. YOU MAKE THE CALL! SP & FP: With runners on 1B and 2B, the runner on 1B leaves the base too soon, but the batter hits a triple and both runs score. Due to the crowd noise and the intensity of the players no one heard the umpire or saw the umpire declare a dead ball. Now, you make the call! Answer on Page 5 (Don’t peek). Follow Arizona ASA Umpires on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/AzASAUmpires A Record Breaking 107 Students at 2014 National Umpire School – Peoria, AZ The ASA/USA Softball National Umpire School (NUS) held at the Rio Vista Recreation Center and Softball Complex 21‐23 February was a tremendous success and made history in the Rocky Mountain Region 13. There were over 130 participants involved with the school; 107 being students. The number of 107 students set a record for all National Umpire Schools previously held in Region 13. ASA President Phil Gutierrez served as the “Guest of Honor” and in a response to a thank you sent to President Gutierrez from the AZ ASA State UIC President Gutierrez responded and is quoted from his e‐mail saying “Thank so much for your very kind words, your hospitality and for the great memento gifts. First class! There is little I can add to what I already expressed in person to you, your Commissioner, your deputy State UIC and to some of your staff. Your event, NUS, was well planned, extremely well attended and almost flawlessly executed. The students were enthusiastic and energetically participated in everything they were asked to do. Your staff was “Johnny on the spot” with any question or situation that arose, taking care of all needs and requests without hesitation. You and your staff deserve all the accolades you’ve received and probably more. The Arizona ASA Umpire Program is n very good shape for the future with all the young volunteers you have on staff or i otherwise assisting with the program, that’s a great credit to you as the State UIC.” The purpose of the ASA National Umpire School (NUS) was to develop each student's individual talents and skills as an umpire. Because of umpire’s interest, it is realized that umpires have the pride and attitude it takes to become one of the best softball umpires in the nation. The goal of the NUS was to bring out the best in individual umpire talent and ability. To achieve that the students were grouped by experience evels and all slow pitch only umpires were in their own group. By all indications of l the student school evaluations, all goals were achieved. The National Umpire School in Peoria, Arizona consisted of a staff of four (4) Instructors from the ASA/USA Softball National Umpire Staff. The instructors were: Malcolm Boyles, Deputy Director of Umpires, Western Territory, Gene Harrison, Southwestern Region 6 UIC, Richard Crocker, Texas Region 7 UIC and Joe Robinson, Rocky Mountain Region 13 UIC. The National Staff Instructors were assisted by NUS Staff Assistants from the Arizona ASA Umpire Staff Aaron Burns, Kasey Burns, Rich Eddings, Wayne Fulton, Tim Jackson, Justin Lauby, Lester Mast, Don McCombs, Geri agwire, DeWayne Nelsen, Donna Shurtz, John Vecs, Andy Williams and the Utah tate UIC, Ralph Andersen. Wally Latall, AZ ASA State UIC was the NUS Coordinator. M S NUS Story continued on Page 5 and photos on Pages 6 and 7 Page 1
