TOTARA GROVE NEWSLETTER TODAY: Thursday 22 nd September 2016 No.20 The Warrior of Nga: Our School of Stars Tena koutou tena koutou tena koutou katoa It is hard to believe that another school term is about to end. By now most of you will have had the chance to see our school production “The Warrior of Nga”. I am sure that you will have been impressed by the quality of the show and you will have enjoyed seeing your children have the opportunity to perform. Tonight is the last performance, so if you haven’t seen it yet, try to get along to the Tikipunga High School auditorium for the final show. By tomorrow, we will have a lot of tired children (and teachers) at school. We still expect to see everyone at school tomorrow, but we will excuse lateness for any children whose parents decide they need a bit of a sleep-in. School ends on Friday 23 rd September at the usual time of 3.00pm and Term Four starts on Monday 10 th October. Ka Kite anō Lana Wolfgram Principal

Supporting Learning At Home As parents and whanau you play a big part in your child’s learning every day, and you can support and build on what they learn at school too. Sometimes important learning gets forgotten during the school holidays. To avoid this please try to include some reading, writing and maths in holiday activities. A few ideas- Choose an interesting book and read to your child every day – show by example a love of books and reading. Draw a map of the backyard and mark spots for treasure. Design a marbles track and challenge a friend to a game of marbles. Revise sight words in a fun way – write them on cards and play games – Snap, Bingo, Memory, Fish …. Write a joke book. Tell jokes to each other and write them down. Send emails or texts to friends or family members. Play cards and board games. This is a great way of practising basic facts in maths. Encourage your child to retell favourite stories or parts of stories in their own words. Turn a favourite story into a play and act it out. Talk about interesting words, especially ones that are fun to say, like “hippopotamus” or “ringaringa”. Short and simple games could involve finding how many little words can be found in the word “atmosphere”. Plan a healthy menu for a backyard picnic. Invite a friend to come along.

School Photos Late orders for school photos must be paid to the office by 2pm tomorrow Friday 23 September.

Determination What is it?

Determination is using your willpower and focussing your energy on a task until it is done. It’s usually an important task that will make a big difference to you if you succeed. It means caring so much about doing something that even when it becomes difficult, you still keep on going. You don’t stop until the job is done.
