Sulfur analysis: the need to knowEnvironmental regulatory agencies like U.S.EPA are promulgating dramatic motor fuelsulfur level reductions. Before 2006. the U.S.EPA requires the sulfur content of diesel tobe reduced from 500 ppm to 15 ppm. Alsoother regulatory offices in countries withinthe European Union and Asia Pacific aresetting up proposals to reduce the sulfurcontent in motor fuels and some of themhave already made this mandatory. Thechallenge to meet the low sulfur fuelspecification has a worldwide impact.
In addition refineries have moved to theproduction of lighter compounds in crude oilfractions, which are sold for higher pricesand produce higher margins. Catalysts playa major role in these new processes andsulfur is detrimental to the effectiveness ofthese catalysts. To ensure efficientproduction, trace analysis of these elementshas to be done on a very regular basis.
TS 3000Thermo Electron Corporation has developeda trace level Total Sulfur Analyzer; model TS3000 UV based on Pulsed UV-Fluorescencedetection, to meet these challenges. The TS3000 offers versatile, reliable and repeatableresults at ultra-low levels in liquid, solid andgas samples. This Total Sulfur analyzerincorporates a high-end pulsed UV-fluorescence detector, which proves superiorrepeatability, provides excellent uptime, andpresents unequalled linearity and enhancedperformance of the analyzer.
The TS 3000 is matrix independent andcomplies with ASTM D5453 methodology,for the determination of total sulfur in motorfuels and a wide range of light and heavyhydrocarbons.
The TS 3000 provides the followingbenefits:1. Versatility. The TS 3000 analyses
liquid, solid and gas/LPG samples fromvery low levels (20 ppb) to very highconcentrations (500 ppm).
2. Flexibility. The TS 3000 is easilyadaptable to total chlorine analyses.
3. Productivity. The TS 3000 works aroundthe clock, equipped with a liquids orsolids auto sampler.
4. Reliability. The TS 3000 ensurescomplete combustion, even with largesamples.

6. Stability. The TS 3000 continuous checksof the lamp and detector sensitivity toensure long calibration line stability.
Principle of operationThe samples are pyrolysed at 1000 °C undercontrolled conditions. The patented turbocombustion tube principle ensures completecombustion of sulfur into sulfur dioxide(SO2).
The formed SO2 is led through apolymer-based scrubber to remove waterout of the combustion gas. Pulsating UVlight excites the SO2 molecules in thereaction chamber. As the exited SO2molecules decays to a lower energy level,light is emitted and detected by aphotomultiplier tube. Detection of lightemitted during the relaxation of excitedsulfur dioxide (SO2*) takes place accordingto the following reaction scheme:

Liquids moduleThe Thermo Electron Corporation universalliquids module is suitable for fast injectionof a wide range of light hydrocarbons. Theunique design of catalyst free syringe typeintroduction module can achieve anoperating temperature of 600 °C. Thismodule is provided with quick gasconnectors and can handle large volume ofsamples (max. 250 µl). Injection rate,sample volume and temperatures can be setby the ThEuS software, which ensures anoptimum total sulfur analysis.
Solids moduleFor analysis of heavy hydrocarbons andsolid samples, the Thermo Electron boatintroduction module is the key. Theautomatic boat driven concept controlled byThEuS software, provides the optimumsolution for many applications. The highsample load capacity and integrated septumstopper minimizes weighing errors andeliminates problems caused by non-homogeneous samples. The module issupported with quick gas connectors forcarrier gas and oxygen as well.
Gas & LPG moduleThe EGM 1700 is the module forintroduction of gas and LPG samples intothe Thermo Electron Elemental analyzers.The auto-sampler is provided with avaporizer and exchangeable sample loopand easy connection to the liquids module.

ELS 3000 modelThe Thermo Electron ELS 3000 auto-sampleris designed for fully automated introductionof light hydrocarbon samples. The samplerhas 74 positions for 2 ml screw cappedsample vials and can inject a maximum of250 µl.

The Total Sulfur analyzer, model TS 3000can be extended in a couple of minutes intoa fully-fledged TS-UV/TX analyzer. Thechlorine module has a short start-up timeand is able to perform a large number ofsimultaneous sulfur & chlorine analysessupported by the Thermo Electron Software(ThEuS).
The robust chlorine titration cell fittedwithin a cooled compartment has a shortstart-up time and is able to perform at least60 analyses without any maintenance. Themodule can be connected to the coulometerquickly and easily. The chlorine option fullycomplies with several ASTM standards likeD4929, D5194 and D5808 also.
