In 2013, we launched Yamal LNG, one of the world’s biggest natural gas liquefaction projects. Extreme conditions make this large-scale project located above the Arctic Circle in Russia a daunting technological challenge. Yamal LNG will come on stream in 2017 and will have a production capacity of 16.5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas a year. Like the Ichthys project in Australia, Yamal LNG will help meet growing energy demand, especially for natural gas.

XXL Solar Power Plants

Because solar will partner with oil and natural gas to supply tomorrow’s energy, we are focusing on ambitious photovoltaic solar projects today. After starting work on Solar Star in California, we took another step forward in 2013. Together with our affiliate SunPower, a global solar leader and maker of the world’s most efficient panels, we were chosen to build and operate several solar power plants around the world, in Japan, South Africa and Chile. The latter will be the largest merchant solar power plant ever built, with a capacity of 70 MWp.

Closer to Growth Markets

The technologically cutting-edge Jubail refining and petrochemical complex, built by SATORP, a Total-Saudi Aramco joint venture, started to come on stream in 2013. With a refining capacity of 400,000 barrels per day, or 20 million tons per year, it is one of the biggest facilities of its kind in the world. The complex’s location in Saudi Arabia allows it to capitalize on local crude oil resources and fast-growing markets in Asia and the Middle East. SATORP created a training center to locally recruit the operators who helped commission the plant. Some 400 young Saudis have benefited from the skills taught there.

Energy for All 500,000AWANGO BY TOTAL LAMPS SOLD AT END-JANUARY 2014

2.5 MILLIONPEOPLE ARE BENEFITING FROM AWANGO BY TOTAL SOLAR LAMPS AND KITS

The Awango by Total line aims to make energy available to all. The concept involves offering low-income households in developing countries a line of solar lamps and kits that are innovative, efficient and affordable, in particular through our service station network. And for people living in the most remote locations, we have also trained young local resellers to sell the lamps. It is a successful program: Awango by Total was marketed in 14 countries in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean in 2013.

To create an increasingly enjoyable as well as environmentally friendly customer experience, we are redesigning our service stations. Today, the new concept has been rolled out at more than 1,000 retail outlets worldwide. For example, the new stations blend more seamlessly into their surroundings, use energy-efficient lighting, incorporate recycled or recyclable materials, conserve water and offer customers fuel-saving tips. In Africa and the Middle East, where we’re expanding sharply, around 400 stations already feature the new design.

46 GRAMSOF CARBON EMISSIONS PER KILOMETER FOR THE PEUGEOT 208 HYBRID FE, OR ONLY HALF AS MUCH AS THE MOST FUEL-EFFICIENT GASOLINE ENGINES

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Peugeot 208 HYbrid FE (Fuel Economy) made it look easy. The Peugeot- and Total-designed prototype distills the latest technologies. Materials developed by Total substantially reduced the car’s weight, while fluids like Fuel Economy lubricants reduce friction and therefore gasoline consumption. The Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE uses just 1.9 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers (UTAC results) while delivering sporty performance, accelerating from 0 to 100 kilometers an hour in 8 seconds flat!

Biojet Maiden Flight

An airplane arriving from Toulouse touched down at the Paris Air Show on June 20, 2013. Although it looked like any other plane, it wasn’t quite, having just flown a test flight with Total-Amyris biojet A-1 fuel, made from plant sugars and used in Europe for the first time. With our biotechnology partner, Amyris, we demonstrated that fuels made from biomass were ready to make the leap from lab to high-volume production. Certification of our biojet for commercial flights is expected in mid-2014.

Lightweight HosesYou’ve never heard of it, but it may allow you to cut back on the amount of fuel you use. “It” is an air conditioning hose made of Gygaprene®, a thermoplastic material developed by Hutchinson, a Total affiliate. Much lighter than standard hoses, it trims weight from vehicles, curtailing fuel consumption and carbon emissions, a plus for both users and the environment. More and more automakers are adopting this solution, a global first that also confirms Hutchinson’s position as a major innovator for this market. We’ll keep you posted!

PUBLICATIONS

More than 34,000 copies of last year’s publication were printed. Using recycled paper reduced our environmental impact. The savings* were:

3,279 kilograms of waste paper

441 kilograms of carbon dioxide, equivalent to:

4,406 kilometers driven by an average European car

90,957 liters of water

8,382 kWh of energy

5,330 kilograms of wood

*Source: Arjowiggins Graphic’s environmental calculator. The carbon footprint was assessed by FactorX using the Bilan Carbone® method developed by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME). Calculations are based on a comparison between the recycled paper used and a virgin fiber paper corresponding to the latest European BREF data available for virgin fiber paper. The results are based on technical data and subject to modification.

> Printed with vegetable ink on Cocoon Silk paper, produced from recycled FSC-certified pulp, reducing pressure on the world’s forests. The Ecolabel-certified paper was produced in an ISO 14001- and FSC-certified paper mill. The printer is certified as complying with Imprim’Vert®, the French printing industry’s environmental initiative. FSC no. C006774. The time-to-market printing concept adopted means that only copies actually distributed are printed, meaning we do not have to discard unused copies at end-of-life.
