Editorial Dear customers, dear visitors of EMO Milano 2015, we meet again after two years at the largest European EMO fair. This year is special for TOS VARNSDORF for historical reasons. In 1915, the first machine with a horizontal spindle was manufactured at Varnsdorf. Since that important milestone, we have manufactured over 20 thousand milling and boring machines. Today, you can find our machines on all continents and TOS VARNSDORF is one of the leaders in its field. Its modern history is shaped by 520 employees, on premises spanning thirty football fields. Since the last EMO Hannover 2013 fair, TOS VARNSDORF has confirmed its position as a modern and progressive company by offering four new types of machines. These machines have complemented our product line of machines with spindle diameters of 100 to 200 mm in table and floor versions. This new phase in the category of machining centers was launched by our most productive machine – WHtec 130. Our designers also completed the development of the table version of a horizontal boring and milling machine with an extending spindle and traveling ram identified as WHR 13. The third new product is a light floor type of a horizontal boring mill with a spindle diameter of 130 mm, intended for complete machining of larger workpieces with a high cutting power and broad technological applications. The newest product is a horizontal milling and boring machine with a hydrostatic guide in all linear axes, designated as WRD 180 H. TOS VARNSDORF not only focuses its efforts on the development and improvement of machines, but also places great emphasis on its highly qualified and professionally skilled experts. In addition to its own products, the company also offers a wide range of pre-sale and post-sale services. Today, we can announce that on 1 September 2016, we will be opening the “TOS VARNSDORF Secondary Technical School”. Our students will be able to attend 2 combined classes per year. One class will end with a state GCSE exam and specialize in mechanical engineering and mechanics/tool setting and one vocational class will be offered in the field of metal working and mechanics. Theoretical and practical education will take place on the premises of TOS VARNSDORF. The EMO Milano 2015 fair is crucial for TOS VARNSDORF. This year we will introduce another new product, this time with the designation WRD 13. We will also introduce two new milling heads, specifically an orthogonal and universal head with partitions of one thousandth of a millimeter intended for machines the size of WHN 13. Another ground-breaking showpiece at this fair is virtual reality – the 3D projection of our machines, including examples of technological applications. We are truly unique in this area. No other competitors have ever presented themselves to customers this way at this fair. The correct design of machining technologies, clamping equipment and determining machining times moves us closer to customers. TOS VARNSDORF has significantly strengthened this area of pre- sale service, providing us with a competitive advantage. In conclusion I would like to invite you to visit our Stand no. H32 L29 in Hall 3, where you will be welcomed by a team of TOS VARNSDORF employees. Each year TOS VARNSDORF prepares several new products in its production programs. It reacts to the needs of cus-tomers and completes its portfolio of products and de-manded technological solutions. At the same time, it ex-pands its range of offered services. No new machines can be created on their own; they are the result of continuous and intensive development, made possible thanks to the extensive construction base of the company. The company invests 3 million EUR a year into the development of new products.

At the EMO 2013 fair in Hannover, the company introduced the horizontal machining centre WHtec 130, which is the largest representative of the newest series of machining centres under the umbrella name WHtec. It is a modern

machine tool for milling, drilling and boring as well as ap-plication of demanding special technologies. According to the spindle diameter, the WHtec 130 machine can be characterized as the „130“ size, which is designed for com-plete machining of various relatively large box- and plate-type workpieces up to the weight of 20 tons. When using milling heads, it can also machine complicated shapes including 5-axis machining. When equipped with electric spindle, the machine satisfies conditions for high-speed machining.

Other new products were also presented in 2014, including WHR 13 (Q), the newest of the company’s horizontal table boring machines. The WHR 13 (Q) has been developed from the most successful generation of table-type WHN 13 CNC

machines, which have reached customers all around the world over the past few decades (more than 2,500 of all ver-sions and types of WHN 13 have been sold) and they are still popular and in high demand. The WHN 13 CNC machines have become a standard for all machines in this category through their unique properties, reliability and power pa-rameters. The horizontal boring machine WHR 13 (Q) takes the best from its predecessor and, using the most modern technologies , represents another step forward in its class.

The series of large WRD floor type machines was extended by WRD 160/180/200 H with hydrostatic guide in all linear axes. It is the largest, heaviest and most powerful repre-sentative of fully hydrostatic machines. Thanks to excel-lent properties of hydrostatic guide, the machines are designed for the most demanding machining methods. The WRD 180 H machines are designed for precise line-co-ordinate drilling, boring, milling and thread cutting. They are particularly suitable for machining of box- and plate-type workpieces and complicated workpieces from cast-iron, steel cast-iron, steel and other machinable materials, mainly large as well as the largest sizes up to 200 tons.

At EMO 2015 in Milan, TOS VARNSDORF introduced the WRD 13 (Q) light floor type machine in its world premiere.

This year the company also added new milling heads HOF 50, HUF 50 and HOIT 50 to its offer of special accessories.

Imagine that you are dealing with a business partner, and perhaps a potential customer, who knows nothing about TOS VARNSDORF. How would you describe your company to them?TOS VARNSDORF is a 100 % Czech private company engaged in the development, production and sale of machine tools and medium to large machining centres with a horizontal spindle. We have over 100 years of history in manufacturing these machines and we are one of the largest European manufacturers of these types of machines. Our company’s headquarters are located in Northern Bohemia, where we have 520 employees, which makes us one of the most significant employers in the region. Our history and position in the region are a commitment not only for responsibility in our business activities, but also social responsibility to the community in the place of our operation. In the last decade, our company has had to make significant changes in its business model, primarily in response to the trend of market globalization. Our focus on export, where 80 – 90 % of our production is exported to foreign markets, made it necessary to open foreign subsidiaries on distant markets. We currently operate production plants in China under the name of TOS Kunming Machine Tool Co. and in Russia as AO GRS Ural, as well as the sales and service centers, TOS Shanghai Machine Tool, OOO TOS Varnsdorf-RUS, TOS India Machine Tools, TOS Trade Canada and TOS Trade North America. Simply put, today’s TOS VARNSDORF is a global player.

The competition is tough and there are not many new markets. How will your products and services convince customers to choose TOS VARNSDORF?Our machines offer technical parameters that are fully comparable with the global leaders in machine tools. It is absolutely essential to maintain the pace of innovations and keep up with the latest trends in the applied tech-nologies of productive machining. We believe that the fact that we have introduced four new machines within 2 years and placed them on the market clearly demonstrates that we give this area maximum priority. However, we are also aware that offering a top technological product accompanied by a wide spectrum of technologi-cal accessories that increase its universality and automated operation is not enough today. It is also necessary to focus on a comprehensive offer of pre-sale and post-sale serv-ices. These services include the preparation of technologi-cal studies, including 3D simulation of machining, on-line service using remote diagnostics and the provision of fast and efficient support for customers even in remote territo-ries. This is an area where TOS VARNSDORF can use its size and stand out among its competition.

Do you have a favorite TOS VARNSDORF product?I don’t have a single favorite TOS VARNSDORF product. I am a manager, I evaluate our products on the basis of whether they have a place in our portfolio in terms of their technical

parameters and the economics of their production and sale. Each machine must logically fit into our portfolio so that we can continue to fulfill our vision. In simple terms, this vision can be described as the effort to be one of the leading global manufacturers of machine tools, offering technologies for machining workpieces larger than 1m3 that require a machining accuracy of up to 0.01 mm. I can therefore say that I am most interested in our newly introduced machines. I monitor whether they meet our expectations and whether our customers appreciate the new additions to our portfolio. In the end, our customers are, and always have been the most important judges of the added value brought by our solutions and at what price. I firmly believe that TOS VARNSDORF products will not disappoint our clients.

Company TOS VARNSDORF a. s. situated in Varnsdorf, Czech Republic has a years-lasting tradition in machine tool pro-duction. The company was founded, under the name of Arno Plauert Machine Works, as early as 1903 and up to now it grew up into a big engineering company, known with its products all around the world.

The company develops, produces and sells machine tools, complemented by a wide range of services. It has its own design team to develop the machines and a strong manu-facturing base to produce them.

The company‘s production program consists of three product groups: table type machines tools for universal use and heavy duty machining of parts from 5 to 30 tons, large WRD floor type machines for the most complicated technological operations for items weighing up to 130 tons and up-to-date machining centres using the latest technologies with the most advanced tools, with auto-matic exchange of tools, palettes, and integration into au-tomated manufacturing systems.

The services provided for these products cover both train-ing in controlling and programming the machines and technological studies as well as preparation and also con-sultation services for placing the machine in a shop or building and the foundation for the machine. The com-pany has a strong service team to carry out all warranty requirements and customer services.

In addition, the company provides for the services in the form of outwork offers (Metalworking, Measuring services, Chemical and Heat Treatment of Metals).

TOS VARNSDORF invests basically continuously, including large investments in buildings. One of the latest invest-ments consisted of the construction of a heavy assembly hall where large machines are assembled. In recent years a new training centre valued at 1.9 million EUR was built and the hall for production of spindle units was repaired for 700,000 EUR.

TOS VARNSDORF also invests in machines. The company focuses on increasing quality and expanding production capacities. In the last two years, a turning/milling centre for 1.4 million EUR, ion nitration furnace for 400,000 EUR

and recently a new portal machining centre for a total of 6 million EUR were purchased within programs for support of innovation. The most interesting fact regarding the ma-chine investments is that most of the production base of TOS VARNSDORF consists of machines of its own produc-tion. This shows that the company trusts its own machines and creates an excellent starting position for the annual customer days. The so-called TOSday is always an excellent opportunity to meet with customers and get a deeper un-derstanding of their needs. During TOSday, the possibili-ties and options of the company’s products are presented directly in the production facility.
