Deal of the Day:A style of her ownKate McCallum is one of the game’s true char-

acters. Her style of bridge could not be describedas “mainstream,” particularly in the women’s game, but no one would ever claim that she was a dullplayer to watch. If ever you get the chance to sitbehind her for a session, don’t miss it.

Today’s deal from the Wager Women’s Teamsshows Kate in action, and afterwards she described herfeelings at various stages of the deal. As the dealerwith only the opponents vulnerable, her hand was:

♠ 7 6♥ 3♦ J 10 9 6 4 2♣ Q 9 5 3While most Americans would consider this an au-

tomatic pass and many Europeans would opine a weaktwo in diamonds, Kate has never been backward incoming forward, and for her this was a routine 3♦ open-ing bid.

You may think that the worst thing that could hap-pen after such an opening bid is to find yourself play-ing 3♦ doubled, but things are almost as bad when thepreempt is followed by three passes. Not surprisingly, the first thing partner puts down in dummy is a single-ton diamond, followed by plenty of defensive values.

North♠ A K Q J♥ 9 8 6♦ 5♣ A J 6 4 2

South♠ 7 6♥ 3♦ J 10 9 6 4 2♣ Q 9 5 3

Not only does partner probably have enough tomake sure that the opponents cannot make 4♥ , but youcan make 5♣ with a favorable lie of the trump suit. For sure, you can make a club partial and you are surelygoing down in 3♦ .

Things do not improve when the defenders startwith two rounds of hearts, tapping you immediately. You can hardly afford to start trumps – the best chanceseems to be to cash spades and hope RHO ruffs highin front of you on the fourth round.

That doesn’t happen, but things do improve slightlywhen LHO ruffs the third round of spades – that’s goodas the opponents have only two spade losers in a highheart contract. More good news is right around thecorner – West now leads a club and you finesse. Areyou not delighted when East ruffs this?!!!

This turns out to be the full hand:♠ A K Q J♥ 9 8 6♦ 5♣ A J 6 4 2

♠ 8 5 ♠ 10 9 4 3 2♥ A K J 10 2 ♥ Q 7 5 4♦ Q 8 ♦ A K 7 3♣ K 10 8 7 ♣ --

♠ 7 6♥ 3♦ J 10 9 6 4 2♣ Q 9 5 3

3♦ duly drifted three down: NS minus 150.At the other table, Kate’s Dutch teammates, Bep

Vriend and Marijke van der Pas, had no trouble reach-ing 4♥ after their South passed as dealer. A 2♦ open-ing also would have given West an easy way into theauction, with similar results.

No doubt the players at the second table thoughtlittle of this deal, mentally registering it as a dull flatgame. Chalk up yet another 10-IMP swing for the“Crazy Woman from New Hampshire.”

Rueful, as in RabbitIt was almost like a playback of Victor Mollo’s

Rueful Rabbit as Sherry Metcalf and Howard Piltchplayed this deal in the Saturday pairs game. She mis-heard – I mean misread – the bidding, but serendipitycame to the rescue, just as it always did for the Ruefulone.

That double by Metcalf was intended as natural. Shethought Piltch had opened one of a major and the 2NTbid was an overcall showing the minors.. She sure wassurprised when she found out what the auction really was.

East started with the ♠K to the ace, and Piltchruffed to hand with a club. He finessed the ♦J success-fully and ruffed another club. He took another diamondfinesse, cashed the trump ace and then took the ♦A,happy to see both opponents following. He led the 13th

diamond from dummy and pitched a spade to rack upplus 590, losing only a spade and two trumps.

Wrong time to talkNorth knew his partnership was in a disastrous

contract here. But he should have waited before offer-ing his opinion.

John Sutherlin opened an off-shape 1NT as Southon this deal from the second final of the Life MasterPairs. East doubled in passout seat, intending it as take-out but accepted as penalty by partner because it wasin the passout seat. This rode around to Richard Corenwho redoubled for SOS. But Sutherlin thought it wasa real redouble, again because it was done in the passoutseat.

West led a low club – fourth from his longest andstrongest – and Coren had a few words to say aboutSOS redoubles as he spread the dummy. Sutherlinwaited and listened quietly, then equally quietly wonwith his ♣Q. “No overtricks,” he said. “I’m just claim-ing my contract.” That was plus 760.

Coren’s feelings of impending disaster could eas-ily have been fulfilled, of course. If West had led ahigh club, the defense would have taken five clubs, four hearts and two spades – down five redoubled forminus 2800!

Bali is an enchanting island, with wonderfulscenery. It is famous for its dance, carving and mu-sic. It is known as the “Island of the Gods.” TheBalinese believe that the Gods always spread theirwings of affection to assure peacefulness to anyonewho stays or visit there.

The Indonesia Archipelago covers approxi-mately the same area as mainland Europe, and hasmore than 13,000 islands of which some 6000 areinhabited. That’s why Bali remains safe and un-scathed during the political changes in Indonesia.

Pass 2♣ Dbl 2♦(2)3♣ Pass Pass 3♦All Pass(1) Announced; good 14-17 HCP(2) Alerted; denies a major, shows a club stopper

The Facts: 3♦ made three, +110 for N/S. The open-ing lead was the ♣A. The Director was called at theend of the auction and before the opening lead. Souththought that 2♦ showed diamonds, not a club stopper. The Director ruled that there was no connection betweenthe explanation and the subsequent 3♦ bid; pass was not aLA (Law 16). The table result was allowed to stand.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s ruling.E/W believed South had received UI from the Alertprocedure. Even though South believed he showed dia-monds by bidding 2♦ , his partner’s Alert and explana-tion indicated that North did not know about South’sdiamond suit. The attraction of bidding 3♦ was muchgreater when partner had no knowledge of South’s suitthan if South believed 2♦ already showed diamondlength and North knew about it. While E/W concededthat bidding 3♦ was attractive in any case, they thoughtit became even more so when partner was unaware ofthe suit. N/S conceded they had a disagreement as tothe meaning of 2♦ .

The Committee Decision: The Committee be-lieved that the UI changed a 95% bid to a 100% bid,but that bidding 3♦ was sufficiently automatic that itshould be allowed in any case. The Committee allowedthe table result to stand.

Dissenting Opinion (Henry Bethe, DavidBerkowitz): We would like to be at the table where itwent “Alert, 2♦ shows diamonds, wanting to compete.”This was the 2♦ bidder’s intent. Would the 3♦ bid beso easy then? N/S had stated that with 5-5-1-2 and 0HCP they would bid Stayman. It seems to us that theadditional chance that North has three or more dia-monds and doesn’t know about South’s diamondsmakes 3♦ more attractive. We would assign the offend-ing side –110 in a 3♣ contract by E/W. We think, basedon Law 12C2, that the most favorable result that waslikely for the non-offending side was –110 in 3♦ .

The Facts: 5♣ went down two, +200 for N/S. Theopening lead was the ♥8. The Director was called atthe end of play. The Director determined there had beena mistaken explanation and that the N/S agreement wasthat 2NT showed two non-touching suits. The Direc-tor ruled that the 5♣ bid broke the connection betweenthe MI and damage (Law 40C, 21B). The table resultwas allowed to stand.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rulingand were the only players to attend the hearing. On theinformation given at the table, West had reason to be-lieve that his partner would be short in hearts and there-fore his high-card strength would be useful. West alsobelieved that his defensive values were sub-par for a2♣ opener against a red two-suiter on his left.

The Committee Decision: The Committee de-cided that the 5♣ bid was directly connected to themisexplanation. The misexplanation and subsequentauction created a clearly erroneous picture for Westand he based his bid on that. The Committee discussedprobable results if West had suddenly been told over4♥ that North had either the pointed suits or the roundedsuits and decided there were too many possibilities. After deciding to award Average Plus to E/W, it wasalso decided that +500 defending 4♠ doubled was thebest result they could have achieved on the board. Therefore, E/W were assigned Average Plus or +500,whichever was worse. N/S were assigned AverageMinus or –500, whichever was better.

tended. Both were full of cartoons.Young Lampert was smitten. “I fell in love with

it and decided then to be a cartoonist.”Working at it every spare moment, Lampert was

a 16-year-old in the summer of 1933 when he stayedup all night working on some samples that he wouldtake to a job interview the next day at Fleischer Stu-dios. He got the job as a colorer for $12 a week.

Lampert worked for Fleischer Studios for five yearsbut quit when the operation moved to Florida.

At that point, he started doing freelance work forAll American Comics, which later became DC Com-ics, which published Superman and a variety of othertitles. One of them was The Flash, about an ordinaryguy who becomes the world’s fastest being after hav-ing chemicals spilled on him.

The idea for The Flash originated with a writer,Gardner Fox. Lampert did the original Flash drawings. He also did another feature called the King Master ofthe Skies, but it never achieved the fame of the Flash, which was one of the DC Comics staples for years.

Lampert’s career in comics was put on hold whenhe was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. Even in theArmy, however, his drawing skills were put to use – inmorale-building publications but also in more mun-dane jobs such as electrical diagrams.

Lampert married Adele Birnbaum in October of1942 – because of swift wartime promotions he wasSgt. Lampert by then – and while he was stationed atDrew Field near Tampa FL he sent samples of his workto magazines all over the country. For six months, therewas nothing, and then there was a breakthrough. Soonthe nation’s magazine readers were enjoying Lampert’scartoons in such publications as The Saturday EveningPost and Collier’s, among many others.

Once discharged and back in New York, Lamperttaught cartooning at the School of Visual Arts, and in1947 he started the Lampert Agency. By 1953, the de-mands of the ad agency had become so pressing thathe had just about stopped doing cartoons.

LampertContinued from page 1

In 1976, Lampert retired from the ad agencyand started a new career – teaching bridge, whichallowed him to resume some drawing to illustratehis lessons and flip charts.

One thing he did before taking up teaching in ear-nest was to earn his gold card. “I couldn’t be a teacherwithout being a Life Master” he says.

Lampert published his first book, The Fun Way toSerious Bridge, complete with illustrations, in 1978.Sales have been steady since and the book is approach-ing 250,000. The Fun Way to Advanced Bridge wasnext, published in 1985 and earning Book of the Yearhonors from the American Bridge Teachers Associa-tion.

The book Lampert is working on now -- about de-clarer play -- does not have a title at present, but itdoes have a subtitle: “Bidding sets the pace, play ofthe hand wins the race.”

Lampert’s connection to The Flash is in the dis-tant past, but seven years ago he began collecting roy-alties from DC Comics. He traveled to San Diego toattend the 1994 Summer NABC there but also to ad-dress a group at a cartoonists’ convention. WhileLampert was there a representative of DC Comics in-troduced himself and asked for Lampert’s Social Se-curity account number. He has been receiving royaltychecks ever since.

These days, Lampert divides his time between

doubles, Michaels, 2/1 forcing to game, fourth-suitforcing, etc.

Usually young kids who play bridge learnedthe game from their parents – but not these boys.“None of our parents play bridge,” said Evan. “Oh,they know how to play – they know the rules – butthey don’t play.”

But the boys sure do. “When we play at home, weswitch around as partners,” said Bill.

“And we take lessons at school, too,” said Jeremy.“Annie Coren is our teacher, and she has helped us a lot.”

Do they read a lot of books to learn more aboutthe game? No. “Mrs. Coren told us we should readThe Diamond Series by Audrey Grant, but that’s theonly bridge book we’ve read,” said Jeremy.

Believe it or not, this is NOT the first NABC forJeremy and Evan. “We heard about the big tournamentin Anaheim last summer, so we went over and triedour luck for a few days,” said Evan.

“We really enjoyed it,” said Jeremy. “That’s whywe were so eager to come here.” Jeremy got his firstgold points here – a section top with his uncle in oneof the Side Game Series worth 2.8 golds.

What do they do besides play bridge? All of themhave good records in school, and they also enjoy bas-ketball, baseball, football, soccer and tennis.

According to Bell, Jeremy’s uncle, the youngstershave inspired a lot of their friends and schoolmates totry the game. “They’re having a wonderful network-ing effect,” he said.

YoungstersContinued from page 1

Deerfield Beach FL and Lenox MA. While in Massa-chusetts, Lampert runs a couple of bridge games at thedevelopment where he lives – and he serves as an usherfor the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 12 summer per-formances.

Although he isn’t working full time at anything,Lampert stays busy. “I’m still teaching, still playingand still drawing,” he says. “Everything I’ve done hascome from my cartoons.”

She thought Piltch had opened one of a major and the2NT bid was an overcall showing the minors.. She surewas surprised when she found out what the auctionreally was.

Vulture’s perfect recordmakes the Bull see red

Those snorts of envy you heard echoing throughthe halls of the Royal York last night were emanatingfrom none other than the Bull. That’s because the Vul-ture is now five-for-five in predicting the results ofthe Wagar KO Teams in Anaheim and Toronto!

After two stanzas of yesterday’s semis, Wei-Sender(Kathie Wei-Sender-Betty Ann Kennedy; Tobi Sokolow-Janice Seamon-Molson; Juanita Chambers-Jill Levin) hadbeen left for dead by most observers. They trailed the e-bridge team by 57. Indeed, the Vulture was circling lowin anticipation of a tasty meal. But the “hyphenates”stormed back to pull the match out, just as the Vulturepredicted.

In the other match, Cohen (npc) (Dianna Gordon-Sharyn Reus; Katie Thorpe-Ina Demme; Martine Lacroix-Francine Cimon) had a huge first quarter, and held on tobeat Baker by 33. Kudos to the Canadian women, whoseoutstanding play this week has made their countrymen -- and countrywomen -- proud. Hail, Canada! The Vulturewishes this team good luck in Bali!

#1 Wei-Sender vs. #2 (originally #22) Cohen (npc):After yesterday’s miraculous comeback, defending cham-pion Wei-Sender has the momentum to win it all againthis year. The Canadians will keep it close, but look forWei-Sender to win by 3. See ‘ya next summer in DC!

third quarter but still trailed. In the final set, Sokolow-Seamon-Molson and Chambers-Levin routed Meyers-Montin and Levitina-Sanborn, 68-25, to get to the fi-nal.

The Canadians, meanwhile, faced Baker and KarenMcCallum, who were paired with two of the top playersin the Netherlands – Bep Vriend and Marijke van der Pas.The Cohen team jumped out to a 61-3 lead after one quar-ter and never looked back, although their opponents didwin each quarter after the first.

The Canadian women qualified to represent theircountry in the Venice Cup this fall in Bali, Indonesia.

New Life MastersDAVID RUBINSTEIN of Cote St. Luc PQ placed

in the overall in the Saturday evening side game, buthe got more points for finishing first over the A, B andC strats in his section. That was enough for LifeMasterhood. He came to Toronto needing 15.5 andhe came through. His partner was Ghassan Menachiof Laval PQ.

Substitute giftsThe unexpectedly large attendance has exhausted

the supply of registration bags.Six thousand bags seemed morethan enough when Toronto 2001started, but all 6000 have beengiven out. Tournament ChairmanPenny Augustine has purchased alarge batch of excellent conventioncard holders that will be given to new registrants.
