DESIGN-BUILD: EVOLVING TO MEET THE CHALLENGE8:00 AM Registration and Continental Breakfast
9:00 AM Opening Remarks and Introductions Roy Timms, Canadian Design-Build Institute (CDBI) Chair, & Ben Novak Conference Chair
9:15 AM SESSION 1 – Art Winslow Delivering Value Using the IPD Model In this Case Study of Canada’s two major IPD projects, you will come to understand how
the contract structure supported by the use of BIM and lean tools, supports a collaborative approach to design and construction and reduces wastes inherent in our traditional processes. By eliminating much of the waste, a team can offer more value for their client while sharing in the resulting savings.
10:15 AM SESSION 2 – Stepanka Elias, Cory Raymond and Carol Philips Anatomy of a Fast-Track DB: UTM’s Innovation Complex Case Study The need for adaptability, flexibility and intense collaboration between all partners is
paramount to a successful fast-track, fixed budget design-build delivery. This informative case study, profiling the award-winning UTM Innovation Complex, puts the spotlight on three unique perspectives of the design-build process: the client (University of Toronto), the design-builder (PCL Constructors Canada Inc.) and the architect (Moriyama & Teshima Architects).
11:15 AM Health Break
11:30 AM SESSION 3 – Christopher George and Akli Ben‐Anteur Sudbury’s P3 Biosolids Project – An Owner’s Perspective The City of Greater Sudbury chose to use a Design‐Build‐Operate‐Maintain and Finance
(DBFOM) procurement model to develop a new Biosolids Management Facility. The presentation will discuss the owner’s perspective through the procurement and construction phases of Canada’s first P3 biosolids project.
8:00 AM Registration and Continental Breakfast
8:30 AM CDBI Annual General Meeting (all delegates welcome)
9:00 AM SESSION 7 – Henry Leung, Amir Tehrani and Tony Vigini RFPs: Powerful Mechanical Performance Specifications Out of all disciplines, mechanical system selection has the most variation from project
to project. This presentation is intended to educate owners, general contractors, project managers and consulting engineers on how to maximize value and ingenuity while minimizing risk. Specific topics discussed include how to include performance targets rather than hard specifications, adjusting for local market conditions, and energy targets.
9:50 AM SESSION 8 – Donna Clare and Mike Roper Lessons Learned in a Large Design-Build Project The Royal Alberta Museum is a $260M Design-Build project being constructed in
downtown Edmonton for the province of Alberta. Ledcor Design-Build (Alberta) Inc. and DIALOG teamed up on the pursuit of this unique project in April 2011 and have faced many challenges and achievements over the past four years. Mike Roper and Donna Clare will share some of the lessons learned from each of their perspectives through the pursuit, design and construction stages of the RAM project to date.

4:00 PM Wrap–up and Concluding Remarks
12:30 PM SESSION 4 – Luncheon Presentation – Gary Hauck & Bob Nippell The Site, the Cityscape, the Financial Pressure: How These Drove an Innovative Collaborative Solution for St.
Catharine’s Meridian Centre. Ball Construction and Architecture49 have successfully delivered over 10 Design-Build projects in the past 2 decades
worth over $150 Million. Based on this long standing relationship, early teaming and pursuit strategy and a very collaborative and integrated design process, we were successful in winning the $45 million St. Catharine’s Meridian Centre Project, and completing it on time in Oct 2014. We will discuss how our strategic alliance with a joint venture local contractor, Rankin Construction, our experienced and extremely collaborative design and construction team overcame various difficulties to deliver a successful value added project for a not to exceed budget, and win the local Niagara Design Award.
2:00 PM SESSION 5 – Sheryl Staub-French & Eric Poirier BIM and DB: Requirements, Expectations and Outcomes This presentation will develop multiple perspectives on BIM (building information modeling) implementation in a
design-build setting. It will discuss the benefits, challenges, opportunities and lessons learned from the deployment of BIM by the Royal Alberta Museum project team. It will also discuss how owners can develop and integrate BIM requirements to ensure that BIM is successfully deployed by the project team and that appropriate and relevant information is provided at handover to enable the use of BIM by the owner during the operations and maintenance phase.
3:00 PM SESSION 6 – Storer Boone Perspectives on Risks with Alternative Delivery Models for Public Infrastructure Assumptions and preconceptions form the basis of bid preparation for design-build contracts. In this presentation,
alternative procurement methods will be examined to illustrate their relationship to risks for owners and contractors. Two small design-build infrastructure projects will be used as illustrations. Perspectives on similar challenges for very large design-build and P3 projects will also be presented based on experience with major highway and transit projects. By understanding and mitigating the risks that might develop from the procurement documents and early decision-making stages, owners, contractors, and the public will benefit by more successful project delivery.
4:00 – 6:00 PM CDBI Networking Reception Come and relax and indulge in delicious refreshments while mingling with your fellow delegates and speakers. Bring
your business cards!
10:45 AM Health Break
11:00 AM SESSION 9 – Andris Ozols,W. Scott Douglas and Ajaz Hasan How Design-Build Improves Collaboration/Innovation/Creativity/Constructability Compared to other delivery formats, the Design-Build format enables an enhanced level of collaboration between
project team members. This leads to innovations in design, detailing, sequencing and construction techniques fostering creative thinking and facilitating novel approaches to constructability. This presentation shows the result of collaboration in the design and construction of the Canada Post Pacific Processing Centre, in Richmond, BC.
12:00 PM Design-Build Luncheon – The CDBI Design-Build Award of Excellence Presentation of the CDBI awards, recognizing excellence in Canada’s design-build industry.
