As NYVA enters its 2014/15 year we are hoping to solidify our presence in the network of support provided to artists in North York. We also are in contact with the North York Art Foundation and other city initiatives to provide additional services. To join the NYVA please see our web site nyva.ca. Maggie Doswell, President, NYVA

WhY should You buY Art froM loCAl Artists?

Alan Bamberger, a San Francisco based art consultant and writer, feels that buying original local art is a great way to fill your home with the uniqueness of you. He says that anyone can make good art buys by following his step by step process of defining what you want to collect; selecting what you like from what’s available; researching and finally buying the piece for the best price. When defining what you want, make sure that you buy original work that has not digitally been reproduced. Ikea art is cheap and cheerful but how does it uniquely express you? And first and foremost go with what you like. An original art piece that you love will thrill you everyday you see it! Most of all when you are out looking for art – enjoy yourself!

The North York Women’s Shelter is currently underway in their Capital Campaign - HOPE BLOOMS - to raise funds in an effort to expand services through the creation of Transitional Support Services including Transitional Housing. Creating Transitional Housing will ensure NYWS is meeting needs and providing essential services required when moving from emergency shelter services to permanent housing. The emblematic symbol for the Hope Blooms Campaign is the Iris and as such we have requested that each artist in the NYVA 2014 show construct one piece of art dedicated to the IRIS.
