    ACS seeking respite care providers

    By Dustin Perry

    Torii Editor

    Applicants are currently being sought

to become respite care providers for fami-

lies on Camp Zama who have children or

other dependents with physical or mental

disabilities, said a representative for Army

    Community Service here.

Selectees for the respite care programwill receive training and certication that

will allow them to provide up to 10 paid

hours per week of in-home assistance for

    qualifying families, said Cheryl Rendon,

the coordinator for the Exceptional Family

    Member Program at ACS.

EFMP respite care providers offer a

short period of relief from the stressors of

everyday life for families or individuals

who have disabled family members, said

    Rendon.

An exceptional family member is denedas someone with a physical, emotional, or

    intellectual disorder requiring specialized

services so their needs can be considered

in the military personnel assignment pro-

    cess, according to ArmyOneSource.com.

There are more than 100 exceptional fam-

ily members on Camp Zama, Sagamihara

Family Housing Area and Sagami General

    Depot, said Rendon.

The duties of a respite care provider are

limited to basic supervision; they cannot be

utilized for tutoring, housework, or actingas a live-in nanny, said Rendon. Expect-

ing the provider to pursue other activities

during the respite period is not consistent

with the Armys program, she said.

    Basically, respite care providers are

there to support families that need their as-

sistance, said Rendon. It could be a few

Dee Saari helps her 12-year-old son Ryan, who is autistic, with his homework Tuesday in their home on Camp Zama. Saari was

eligible to receive respite care last summer when her husband, a civilian assigned to the Japan Engineer District here, was

deployed to Iraq. However, due to a lack of available providers at the time, she temporarily relocated her family stateside.

    ment being that active-duty servicemem-

bers are the only ones who are currently

eligible for the service here. Those who

do qualify go through an interview process

with various applicants and choose who

they would like to be their provider. Fromthere, the family and their chosen provider

coordinate the dates and times when care

    will be needed.

    The percentage of exceptional family

members on military installations in Japan

compared to the continental U.S. is sig-

nicantly lower because of the remoteness

providers, it gives them a sense of doing

something good providing a service that

is needed for families that may not be able

to function because of those stressors.

Dee Saari lives on Camp Zama with her

husband, a civilian assigned to the Japan En-gineer District here, and their two children:

    15-year-old Megan and 12-year-old Ryan,

who is autistic. Last April, Dees husband

deployed to Iraq, making her eligible for

respite care while he was away.

Having the extra assistance would have

been a tremendous asset for Dee, she said,

the time her husband was deployed.

There are times when I have friends

who can offer to help, but you can only

ask your friends so many times for favors

before you wear out your friendship, said

Dee. There wasnt anybody else to giveme a break.

Its hard to be patient day after day,

hour after hour, with all of the demands

that a child with autism places on you,

added Dee. Sometimes you just need some

mental-health time, some time to yourself

to go to the gym or the day spa just to sit

Intramural volleyball begins at YanoBy dutn Prry

    Torii Editor

Mark Spillane, left, of U.S. Army Japan, spikes the ball as Nathan

Kelley of the Air Force attempts to block it during a volleyball

match held Monday at Yano Fitness Center here.

Regular-season play began Monday at Yano Fitness Center for

the nine teams in Camp Zamas intramural volleyball league, which

will hold games weekly until the playoffs begin in May.

Though there are two less teams on the roster compared to last

year, there will be no shortage of intense athleticism on display this

season, said the intramural sports director for Camp Zama.

Well always have a lot of interesting volleyball to watch,

said Andy Abear. When tough, competitive teams play each other,

    its always exciting.

Team this year include U.S. Army Japan, the 78th Aviation

Battalion, the Japan Engineer District, the Department of Public

Works, the Air Force, the 35th Combat Sustainment Support Bat-talion, U.S. Army Garrison-Japan, the 78th Signal Bn., and the

Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

Top contenders this season are regular standouts such as

USARJ, USAG-J and DFMWR, but with enough practice and

determination, any team could be a dark horse by the time the

    playoffs arrive, said Abear.

The teams that come to play are of course going to have an

edge, said Abear. Others that have a more casual approach

to the game will have to work very hard if they want to remain

    competitive this season.

Mondays games included three consecutive matches that were

each won in only two sets. In the rst, the USARJ team easilyoutplayed the 78th Avn. Bn., beating them 25-11 in the rst set

    and 25-8 in the second.

Next, JED faced DPW in a more competitive match. DPW

won the rst set 25-18 and eventually sealed their victory with a

    27-25 win in the second.

The last match of the night was another fairly one-sided affair,

with the 35th CSSB triumphing over the Air Force in two quick

sets with at least a 13-point margin in each.

Games are played Monday through Thursday at Yano, begin-

    ning at 6 p.m.
