These discussions are attended by both parents and the student. Appointments for Goal Setting are 10 minutes. Please make an appointment for you and your learner to meet with the class-room teacher once you receive this information.

MARCH 2018 ROLL RETURN Today (Thursday 1st March) we complete our Roll Return for the Ministry of Education. If your child is absent from school, we will require a note or email to the school office with an explanation. admin@torbay.school.nz

CAMP Next week our Y5 & 6 team will be on camp. A huge thanks to all of our parents who have volunteered to help out on camp. Due to Health & Safety Regulations there will be no opportunity for parents or families to visit camp unless they are registered helpers. We wish

you all a great time!! RESOURCES FOR TIRITIRI TEAM Tiritiri (Y1) teachers are looking for resources for their Wa Kitea programme. Could you donate any of the following? Dress ups, tea sets, play dough toys, cooking equipment, craft materi-als (buttons, sticker, foam), soft toys (small), puppets and a carpentry table. Please drop off in

Rooms 13/14. Thank you!

PROPERTY UPDATE We have a number of property projects underway; Classrooms 1— 8, 13 and 14, the library, Media Room, Resource Room, Tui Room, Mrs Hills’ office will all be fitted with Heat Pumps / Air Condi-tioning units. This work will start next Friday.

Rooms 9—12 will also have these fitted during the renovation work that will start later this month. This work will modernise and join together rooms 9 and 10 in the first phase of building and then rooms 11 and 12 in the second.

We have created a covered area outside Room 23 so that the children can hang their bags, free-ing up more space in the classroom.

The Board has approved funding for the new middle school playground and this has been de-signed by our children and ordered. Our projected installation date is the April holidays.

The design of our dinosaur garden area has been completed and we are now getting quotes to complete the work. This project has been designated as our PTA fundraising

goal. This will tidy up the area beside the sand pit and at the top of the car track it will create a wonderful new area in our school.

Over the last two days we have Re –keyed our whole school so that we now have a master key system in the school making things much more manageable for our staff.

We have also ordered new carpet for our administration area and this will also be laid during the holiday break.

MEETINGS The next BOT meeting is Monday 19th March at 7.00pm in the staffroom. The next PTA meeting is Monday 26th March at 7.30pm. We encourage all new parents to join us. Please contact Megan Sadler, Chairperson, ptatorbay@gmail.com for meeting details.

ACTIVITY FEES & DONATIONS – Thank you to all of the parents who have already paid ac-tivity fees and donations this year. A reminder that these are now due. Please contact gobrien@torbay.school.nz or mboyd@torbay.school.nz if you need extra time paying these amounts.

HEALTH ROOM REMINDERS – Any students who have been unwell with vomiting or diarrhoea must be clear for 24 hours before they are able to return to school.

Head Lice There is an on-going infestation of Nits at school. Please check your children daily for Head Lice and treat where necessary.

Impetigo (school sores) have been prevalent at this time of the year, if you child has any un-explained blisters, wounds or scabs that do not appear to heal, please consult your doctor.

Don’t forget Scooter Day is on Fridays for Years 1-4 after lunch eating (on

Waterwise days) You can bring your scooter but will

only be allowed to ride if you are

wearing a helmet and shoes.

Please make sure your child’s

scooter is named.

Your scooter can only be ridden on

the top court by the swimming

pool.

They can’t be ridden at morning tea

or before school.

Walking around our school is a revelation. At any given time there is a huge range of activities going on in-

side and outside the classroom. This morning a visit to room 13 and 14 revealed all manner of creative learn-

ing happening from building to art, the children were immersed in high interest activities that captured their

imaginations leading to some wonderful conversations and outstanding language.

Our Wa Kitea programme or Play Based Learning is in full swing in Tiritiri, our year one group. These pictures

show Wa Kitea in action this morning. Children were being creative, working collaboratively, problem solving

and most importantly having fun investigating.

I visited our Year 4 camp at Camp Maynard last evening. The camp was filled full of happy children, parents

and teachers participating in very full programme. Thank you to all those parents who are supporting our

outdoor education programme in so many different ways and a huge thank you to our Staff who give up

immense amounts of their own time to make these events happen.

On Wednesday the 14th and Friday 23rd of March our Teachers will be attending Paid Union Meetings to dis-

cuss our upcoming negotiations over our Collective Agreement. This will mean that our programmes will be

altered on those days. We have spread our attendance over the two days so that the remaining teachers can

provide an alternative programme for the children.

Because of the Paid Union Meetings and a very busy programme in week 7 we have decided to move our

goal setting learning conversations to week 8. These will be timetabled for Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st

and Thursday 22nd of March. This is a great opportunity to have some uninterrupted time with your child’s

teacher and I urge you to make an appointment through our online booking system.

Thank you to all those drivers who have changed their habits in the drop off zone. It was much less congest-

ed towards the end of last week, please continue to move forward when there is a space in front of you and

please don’t sit there for any longer than you need to as others are waiting to get in and do not leave your

car unattended.

Our Powhiri on Thursday last week was an outstanding occasion. It was a real honour to have Captain Gold-ing in our school presenting a plaque to the school and honouring our immediate past pupil Mia Kordic. She was being honoured for her achievement in reaching the final 10 of a nationwide contest to design a badge for Capt. Golding’s new ship The HMNZS Aotearoa. Our Kapa Haka group performed really well and I was particularly impressed with our girls that performed the Karanga during the Powhiri. Thank you to Mrs Mac-Beth for preparing our Kapa Haka group at such short notice and to Mrs Dawe and Mrs Heasley for initiating this work with their children last year. International Morning Tea

On Wednesday 21st February Torbay School hosted a morning tea for all our Interna-tional Students and their families. This gave the parents an opportunity to have a look at the artwork and other school work that the children had done over the last month. The children and their parents then sat down and enjoyed some delicious lamingtons and other tasty New Zealand treats. It was great to see so many international families enjoying and learning lots about Torbay School and New Zealand.

HOCKEY

Open for the Winter hockey season for 2018.

The season runs from early May to early September and games are played are on an

all weather turf. They are on a Monday night at the Rosedale grounds.

Teams registrations for both boys and girls are open for Y3/4 students- games between 4-5.30 pm and

Y5/6 students games between 5-7.30pm.

Team entries will be dependent upon registrations. Notices containing details are available from the
