Formatting Styles for Research Paper

Styles: (Shelly, Cashman, & Vermaat 2002 p. WD 2.06)

MLA Modern Language Association of America

APA American Psychological Association

MLA:

Double spacing between lines

Margins of page one inch from top, bottom, left, & right

Indent one inch from left first word of each paragraph

Page# on top-right one-half inch from top margin

On each page, your last name precede the Page#

MLA doest not require a Title Page; instead place your Name & Course

Information in a block at one inch top-left margin from top

After name & course information, double-space and put Title on center

In body of research paper, refer author in Parenthesis with Page# of the referred

information

Notes are only used for optional explanatory notes. Use Superscripts (raised

numbers) on the term and put notes in sequence

Notes could be positioned as Footnotes or Endnotes

Indent first line of each note one-half inch from left margin, and place one space

before starting the note-text

Double-space the note-text; at the end of note-text bibliographic information

could be placed for further reference

MLA style uses the term Works Cited for bibliographic references & it is

alphabetically listed

Works Cited is on the center of page, one inch from the top

List work by each authors last name or if name is not available then by title of the

work (Italicize the title)

Works Cited on a separate numbered page

Double-space all lines in Works Cited; begin the first line from left margin and

one-half inch indented the subsequent line.

APA:

Double-space all pages with 1.5 inch space at top, bottom, left, & right

Indent first work of each paragraph 0.5 inch from the left margin

Upper-right margin of each page, place a running head that consists of Page#

double-spaces below the summary of paper title
