But while you’ve likely heard plenty about checking your battery, flushing your fluids, and changing the oil, there is another component of your vehicle that often goes overlooked despite being a key safety feature during inclement weather—the windshield wipers. A wiper tune-up can have an enormous impact at any time of the year, but it’s especially effective and important when visibility is at a premium during the winter months. Maintaining proper windshield wiper health gives you a much better chance of getting through the holiday season without any accidents. TOP SHOP AUTOMOTIVE Your vehicle’s wiper system is comprised of five parts: (1) wiper motor, (2) wiper arms, (3) wiper blades, (4) wiper inserts, and (5) washer fluid. The arm connects to the base of your vehicle and holds the blade. The wiper insert (the rubber squeegee that’s actually in contact with your windshield) is held by the blade. The motor powers everything. And washer fluid is, of course, the liquid that shoots onto your windshield to clean it. How the Windshield Wiper System Works In order to maintain optimum condition, your wiper system needs routine maintenance and replacements. The wiper insert should be replaced at least twice a year, ideally before and after the winter months. To check to see if your wiper inserts need to be replaced at any time, just spray washer fluid and switch on your wipers. If you hear a screech- ing sound or see streaks on your windshield, your wiper inserts are worn and need to be replaced. Your wiper blades also need regular attention. Cleaning them twice a month will help you stay on top of any cracks or other damage that could lead to problems in severe weather. Wipe down your wiper inserts with a clean rag and some washer fluid at the same time you clean the blades. continued on page 2 Checking Your Wiper System

Work Zone Hazards – Don’t Let Road Construction Do a Number on Your VehicleThere’s always some kind of road construction going on in Santa Barbara, and we’ll likely see more construction proj-ects begin over the course of 2016. While road construc-tion will improve mobility and safety in the long term, in the short term, it can be tough on vehicles. Here are some tips on what to watch out for when you’re frequently driv-ing in work zones.

Loose stones and rough roads can harm your vehicle’s steering and suspension systems, and even throw out your alignment. Debris also has the potential to damage your vehicle’s exterior or windshield. The symptoms of steering and suspension or wheel alignment problems include:

A few minutes of effort is well worth the safety advantage of having clean, healthy wipers. Winter driving is just too dangerous without perfect and reliable visibility. Let’s all make it home SAFE in the New Year!

Five Minutes Makes a Difference (continued from page 2)

Symptoms of Road Damage

• Uneven tire wear• Pulling to one side• Noise and vibration while cornering• Loss of control

The damaged parts causing these types of symptoms may include shocks and/or struts, the steering knuckle, ball joints, the steering rack, bearings, seals or hub units, and tie rod ends.

Check Your Steering & SuspensionHave your vehicle checked immediately if you notice any of the above symptoms, as steering and suspension systems are key safety-related components significantly affecting your car’s ride and handling. Regardless of road conditions, these systems should be checked annually and a wheel alignment should be performed at the same time.

Drivers should also do frequent visual checks of their vehi-cle’s exterior and windshield to identify any chips, dings, or cracks. While these may seem like small problems, they can become costly repairs and safety hazards if they aren’t taken care of right away.

Stay Safe with Timely RepairsEven the most careful driver, traveling slowly and cau-tiously through a construction zone, can hit an unexpected bump or other hazard. If you experience a problem, bring your vehicle to Top Shop Automotive, and we’ll make sure you’re in good shape to get back on the road.

During the winter months, we crave satisfying foods that stick to our ribs and add a layer of warmth

against the cold. Creamy pasta plus ham and cheese equals a meal that will please the whole family.

Winter Recipe

Ingredients

• Kosher salt• 12 ounces penne• 1 cup frozen peas• 2 large eggs, plus 1 egg white• 1 cup evaporated milk• 4 tablespoons unsalted butter• 3 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated (1 scant cup)• 3 ounces part-skim mozzarella cheese, grated (about 1 cup)• 3 ounces fontina cheese, grated (1 scant cup)• 3 ounces deli ham, in 1 piece, diced• 1 ounce parmesan cheese, grated (about 1/2 cup)

Directions

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until very al dente, about 8 minutes, adding the peas in the last 2 minutes of cooking.

Meanwhile, whisk the eggs, egg white, evaporated milk, and ½ teaspoon of salt in a bowl.

Drain the pasta and peas. Wipe the pot dry and return the pasta and peas to the pot. Add the butter and stir to coat. Add the cheddar, mozzarella, fontina, and the egg mixture.

Place the pot over medium-low heat and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, 8 to 10 minutes, adding the ham halfway through cooking. (Don’t let the mixture boil or the eggs will scramble). Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the parmesan.
