Bellingen International Jazz Festival
On Friday 19 of August, Duval High School Soul Band left Armidale in the
school bus and made the trip down Waterfall Way to Bellingen. Once at
Bellingen, the band rehearsed with Bellingen High School Stage Band
under the direction of Miss Phelen (from Bellingen High School) and our
very own Mr Myers. That evening, the students and staff of Bellingen
High School billeted us. We had a great time with our billets and there
were many different stories of going to the beach and playing with fire
which will be told again and again.
On Saturday morning, we gathered at Bellingen Markets, one of many
live performance venues at the Bellingen International Jazz Festival.
There was a terrific carnival atmosphere and Duval High School began
the morning‟s entertainment with a crowd pleasing 40 minute set of jazz,
swing, and funk
music, with
something for
everyone from
Michael Bublé
to Nina Simone.
Bellingen High
School
performed
straight after us
and then we
combined our
bands and
performed the
music that we had rehearsed on Friday.
The vibe at the event was awesome and we wandered around the
markets as we listened to a school stage band from Port Macquarie who
were very good. The whole excursion was a really positive experience
and we‟re looking forward to going back again next year and hopefully
performing again in one of the concert venues.
Thank you Mr Myers and Mrs Pearson for taking us!

School Contribution and Course Fees
Thank you to all parents who have paid their contributions and course fees. The school relies on
these course fees to purchase materials and resources used and consumed in school subjects.
Recently many of you will have received a second Statement of Account. Some of you may have al-
ready paid earlier in the year before Finance Invoicing took place. I apologise to any parents who
may have received one of these statements and have already paid. If you have paid, please ring me
as soon as you receive a statement and I will fix this for you.
This fault sometimes occurs when a receipt is processed at the school office, because it must be proc-
essed as a “prepayment” for it to offset against invoiced contribution and subject fees. Often course
fees are paid at the beginning of the year before the “invoicing” process takes place. If the receipt is
processed as a “sundry” receipt instead of a “prepayment” receipt, this causes the second statement
to be generated.
Usually, invoicing occurs in Week 6 as we have to wait until all classes are fully established before
this takes place and all changes have been considered.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if there are problems with your statement.
Thank you for your understanding.
Jenny Mitchell
School Administrative Manager.
P & C Matters
The P&C finalised their support for the school Wish List at their last meeting. The Wish List is pre-
pared by asking the school staff to nominate areas that require extra support to improve the learning
environment for our children. This year, the P&C has agreed to support the purchase of six items to a
total value of $12,200. Those items are a piano, sun shade, sound equipment for the school hall,
blinds for the staff common room, an electronic drum kit and a baritone saxophone. We look forward
to seeing and hearing the benefits of this support and we thank the school community for its support
of the P&C.
Our communication subcommittee continues to work with the school to implement the outcomes from
the communication survey that we conducted last year. You will already have noticed some good
changes to the school website, such as the "contact us" option for you to convey feedback to the
school and the „Dates for the Term' found in the News/Events page.
More changes are planned over the coming months and we thank Jeanette Verwayen for her work
with the website and the newsletter.
The next meeting of the P&C will be held 7pm Wednesday 21st September, and all are welcome.
PBL Update
The PBL Team have finalised the DHS PBL logo to rep-
resent CREST (Community, Respect, Excellence, Safety
and Teamwork). The process of working with the
school community to develop our PBL Matrix of Ex-
pected Behaviours has begun. Our first area of focus is
„What are the expected behaviours in the playground?‟

Northern NSW State Futsal Champions!
The Northern NSW Football Association ran its state futsal finals in Newcastle on the 8 September. Du-
val had three boys‟ teams that reached the finals by qualifying through the preliminary stage. Two
under 15 boys‟ (Red and Green) teams and one under 19 boys‟ team. All teams played tremendous
futsal to reach the semi-finals. The under 19 boys lost to Tamworth in a penalty shoot out after scoring
two goals in the last 45 seconds to force the game to penalties.
The two under 15 teams ended up playing each other in the semi final. The red team were unfortu-
nately struck by two bad injuries in the pool-stage and thus were well below full strength in the semi.
As a result the Duval Green team won and went through to the state final against Newcastle Grammar.
During the pool stage Newcastle Grammar easily defeated the Duval Greens, but when it mattered
the Greens showed Newcastle their real talent. In a match that was completely dominated by Duval,
the Greens thrashed Newcastle Grammar 5-0 to become state champions.
The team line ups were:
* Under 15 Green (State Champions) Jack Baillie, Robert Campbell, Riley Hopwood, Ari Georkes,
Lewis Russoniello, Naran Singh, and Brock Whittley.
* U15 Red (semi-finalists) Daniel Cherry, Brodie Davies, Dean Heffernan, Ben See, Rory Sutherland,
Hugh Winter
* Under 19 (semi-finalists) Andrew Magann, Brayden Kliendienst, Hugh Reckord, Nathan Hewitt, Zac
Smith, James Campbell, Liam Campbell,
Bruce Wilson, Baxter Ward.
We would like to also recognise the efforts
of Mr Russo (coach) and Mr Bartlett-Taylor
(driver).

teams in great spirits moments before they

State Futsal Semi-Final at Newcastle. The
Greens went on to become state champi-
ons.
