PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

The colder weather is finally

upon us, and sadly, that means

that the observance of correct

school uniform has gone into a

major decline! Unfortunately,

that has a negative effect on

both the appearance of our

students, and the reputation of

the school in the wider

community. I really believe that we have a broad

and fair uniform code, and that there is no reason

for students to be wearing jumpers in anything

other than the school colours. I urge parents to

speak with their children about this and to

encourage the wearing of correct school uniform.

In other less-than-pleasing news, I have received

complaints about students deliberately kicking

footballs into the construction areas, despite

warnings in this newsletter and on our last formal

assembly. Considering that I have now given two

specific warnings about this, please be aware

that students who persist in this behaviour may

be suspended from school for Continued

Disobedience.

Enough negativity! It give me great pleasure to

congratulate the following students who have

achieved excellence in school representation!

Our Dancers:

PJ Ferris (Year 12) has been successful in

gaining a place in the Bangarra Company and

will perform at the 2017 Schools Spectacular

and the State Dance Festival;

Elayna Moens (Year 12) has been selected to

audition for the Schools Spectacular

Contemporary Ensemble;

Seven of our Aboriginal Dancers and 10 DHS

dancers have been selected for Schools

Spectacular 2017 in the Aboriginal Dance

Troupe and Combined Dance;

Our Aboriginal Dancers recently performed

with distinction at the ANTAR Reconciliation

Bridge Walk, and will be coordinating the

Primary School dancers for the Aboriginal

Dance segments of the upcoming ‘An Evening

with ACOS’ at Lazenby Hall.

Our Choir:

17 choir members have been selected for the

2017 Schools Spectacular;

Recently our Year 9 Music Class and Arts

Captains Angie and Bridget performed for the

Ningana Wing of Autumn Lodge. The residents

were delighted by the performance, and have

invited our students to come back and

entertain them at any time.

Harmony Day Poster Competition:

It was announced last week at Parliament

House that Amelia Randell (Year 10) is the joint

State Winner in the Harmony Day Awards for

her beautiful and evocative poster. Well done,

Amelia!

YEAR 8 FOOD AND FASHION

Year 8 Food and Fashion students have

completed their first project this year. They

have each designed and made a book cover

to fit an A4 book. Each student chose their

own fabrics and decorations to put on it.

Some of the decorations included lace,

ribbons, applique, bows, pockets, or buttons.

Some students chose to applique their own

initials on their book cover, others

appliqued birds, footprints and other shapes.

Mrs Turley was thrilled with the finished

results and wanted everyone to see the

students beautiful work.

Well done to all Year 8 Food and Fashion

students.

Try as you might,

To hold him tight

You will beg and beg

And in the end

You will be scratched on the neck.

He leaps up onto the bench,

To have a sneaky

Plastic wrapped snack.

Naughty as he is

He tries to behave

For if he doesn’t,

He will be sent back to the shed.

My Shelter Days are numbered,

Four walls and no-one cares,

You came and rescued me.

Trained and helped me prepare,

I finally have a purpose,

You assigned me to someone special.

Together we learnt many tricks,

Jumping over many hurdles,

Trust and confidence is the key.

I will always be there for you,

Giving you support through your darkest days,

I will never whinge or complain.

Moving forward in leaps and bounds,

Together we reached our dreams,

A love never to be broken.

YEAR 7 SCIENCE

As part of our topic on "Habitats and Interactions"

in Science class, Year 7 have been learning about

how various species around the world have

become endangered due to threats from

changing environments or predators.

Year 7M 2016 and 7M 2017 both made the very

generous decision to symbolically adopt an

endangered species for the classroom to support

the WWF's (World Wildlife Fund) global efforts to

protect wild animals and their habitats.

7M 2016 adopted Louie the tiger and 7M 2017

have recently adopted an arctic fox. This species

adoption is a tradition we hope to maintain at

Duval High School in order to educate all

students about how important our diverse wildlife

and the environment are to us.

SENIOR ANCIENT HISTORY

Last week Year 11 and 12 Ancient History

ventured to Sydney to see a special exhibition at

the Australian National Maritime Museum. The

exhibition was about the maritime history of

Pompeii, which is part of the core study in Year

12. We viewed artefacts that may never leave

Italy again, as well as some copies of the famous

plaster casts of the victims. While at the museum

we attended a guest lecture by the very well-

known and highly regarded archaeaologist

Andrew Wallace-Hadrill as he spoke about some

recent work being done in Herculaneum and

what we have learnt because of it. Some of this

work has involved sorting through the contents of

sewers ...

We also participated in a workshop at the

Nicholson Museum at Sydney University. This was

about archaeology, artefacts, interpretation and

methodology. We all worked with artefacts from

the ancient world, some from Sparta, Pompeii,

Egypt, some were at least 4000 years old. This

was a fascinating workshop, run by a very

knowledgeable (and just a little bit quirky) guide.

Plus it was quite inspiring to be on the grounds of

Sydney University!

Prior to this we had been to the Powerhouse

Museum, which was also full of marvellous and

fascinating artefacts, some from history, some

quite modern.

The excursion was amazing - the things we saw

and touched, the people we met (especially

Andrew Wallace-Hadrill!), the way the bus only

(mostly) started when we needed it to.

A HUGE thank you to Mr Grafton for stepping in

to help Ms Simes drive (at very short notice). And

a special thank you to the students for their good

humour and patience, despite the difficulties we

had with the bus.

SUCCESS AT DANCE EISTEDDFOD

On Wednesday, 24 May, over 50 students from

Years 8 to 11 competed at the annual New

England Dance Eisteddfod. Five dances were

entered from four elective classes and our Duval

High School Dance Company.

The purpose of Duval entering the Eisteddfod is

to give students opportunities to experience all

that Dance has to offer. For some students, this

was their first time on a stage performing in front

of people and quite a nerve racking experience!

Whilst it is a competition, our results are merely

icing on the cake for a productive Semester 1 in

terms of developing students’ Dance technique

and confidence in performance:

Years 7-10 Jazz:

1st – Year 9 Elective Dance class

3rd – Year 10 Elective Dance class

Years 11-12 Jazz:

1st – DHS Company

Years 7-10 Contemporary:

2nd – Year 8 Elective Dance class

Years 11-12 Contemporary:

1st – Year 11 Elective Dance class.

Our students worked so hard in the lead up to the

day and demonstrated great teamwork and

dedication to their peers. During our final

rehearsals, the day before the competition, all

students were respectful during performances

and cheered on their peers from various year

groups. This behaviour was then replicated

during the competition, demonstrating our

CREST values out in the community.

Thank you to Jenny Mcfadyen for helping

organise costumes for our students. A big

thankyou to Miss Labrosse for helping supervise

on the day and ensuring all hair was beautifully

braided and stage makeup was ready for the

competition!

Congratulations once again to all of our students

for their hard work this Eisteddfod season. I am

so proud of you all!

RECONCILIATION BRIDGE WALK

On Sunday, 28 May, Armidale ANTaR (Australians

for National Title and Reconciliation) hosted the

annual Reconciliation Bridge Walk. Members of

the Armidale community are invited to cross

Stephens Bridge (near Information Centre) to

replicate the walk that took place across the

Sydney Harbour Bridge on 28 May, 2000.

Our Duval Deadly Dancers were asked to perform

for the participants as a part of the entertainment.

Unfortunately, it had rained a lot during the night,

leaving the ground wet, the creek swollen and

potentially deterring some of the community from

participating.

Two of our students demonstrated great initiative

and commitment to their performance,

entertaining approximately 120 people who

gathered for the event. Performing repertoire

from The Sapphire’s and Yothu Yindi, Sateeva

Boney and Chloe-Anne Peterson (both Year 9)

received warm congratulations for their

performance from the community.

This is the third successful performance from the

Duval Deadly Dancers for 2017. Thank you to Ms

Pearson for working tirelessly with our Dancers

to prepare them for such performances and foster

the creativity of our Indigenous students.

In two excellent gala days in the last three weeks,

Duval's school table tennis team beat all-comers

to become Combined High Schools NW Regional

Champions.

First, our four Year 11 players Alex Rogers, Brad

Lucas, Kolja Drydale-Cech and Will Goyen

travelled to Inverell and won with

impressive play against MacIntyre and Inverell

High Schools.

Then last Friday we hosted school teams from

Tamworth, Oxley and Narrabri High Schools for

another day of high quality ping pong at the

PCYC in Armidale.

Duval's most experienced player, Alex, made

way for two of our rising stars, Year 8 students

Dion Whitfield and Josiah Bainivalu, who played

outstandingly to help Duval win all four school-vs

-school rounds 4:0.

Brad and Josiah were each dominant in all of their

singles and doubles matches. Kolja overcame

probably the toughest opponent of the day in

beating Narrabri's number one, Matt, twice (11:4,

13:11, 12:10 in a morning round then more

comfortably 11:7, 11:5, 11:9 in the afternoon's

regional final). Will and Dion proved their team

credentials and fighting spirit by each coming

from behind in two of their singles matches with

all-out attacking play after losing the first set.

All of our six players should be congratulated on

the high level of their play, reward for the

dedication they have shown in practising up

to five lunchtimes a week this year and last. Well

done also to all players from the schools involved

in both gala days; every student showed faultless

behaviour and sportsmanship.

Duval's team of Year 11 and Year 8 students will

now be travelling to the Table Tennis State Finals

to be held at Sydney's Olympic table tennis halls

on Monday 26th June, where they will get the

opportunity to play against some of the best

players in the state.

FUTSAL NEWS

On Monday, 22 May, five Duval High School

Futsal teams travelled down to Coffs Harbour to

compete in the Norther Rivers Futsal

Championships.

Duval had sides in the 14s,16s and 19s Boys and

in the 16s and 19s Girls draws. Competition was

tough and the matches were fast paced.

Duval sides stuck it to schools such as Bishop

Druitt College and Coffs Harbour Community

College, which are regarded as some of the finest

Futsal schools on the state.

All students are to be commended upon their

performance and their positive approach to the

each match.

Final Results:

16 Girls: 5th

16 Boys: 4th

19 Girls: 4th

14 Boys: 3rd

19 Boys: 3rd.

Some lessons from the day:

Matches are fast paced and goals can be

scored in succession - Josh Dunbar (14s)

scoring 4 goals in a match, TWICE!

A strike on goal is better than no strike on goal

- ‘Toe Poke King’ Fahad Alghatany (16s)

A solid goal keeper is key - well done

to ‘Golden Gloves’ Megan Frost (16s)

If a set piece off a corner leads to a goal

opportunity; then keep doing it, keep doing it

and keep doing it - Izzy Winter (19s)

Dunlop Volleys make very suitable Futsal

shoes when combined with 70's style long hair

- Jacob Prater and the other 19s boys.

The selectors from Northern New South Wales

Futsal were also present. They have indicated Mr

Model that a number of Duval players will be

selected for representative teams ……….. watch

this space for the announcement of those

selected!

STATE HUNTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

The State Hunter Shooting Championships were

held in Coffs Harbour recently, with two Duval

students competing over two days. The

conditions were challenging with a large field of

competitors.

Day 1 saw Tiffany Tarrant (Year 10) come first

junior in Light Class with a score of 489.10 and

Patrick Simpson third with a score of 477.9 (best

possible score is 500.25).

In the Heavy Class on Day 2, Patrick came first

with a score of 498.18 and Tiffany second with a

score of 496.10.

This resulted in Tiffany taking out first junior with

985.20 and Patrick 975.27. Amazing shooting was

demonstrated by both students, who came home

with trophies and “250” patches for perfect 250

scores in one of the details. Well done!

RIMFIRE BENCHREST ROUND ROBIN

The Northern N.S.W International Rimfire

Benchrest Round Robin was held at Taree on 13-

14 May.

This is an event which is held throughout the year

at eight different locations. It consists of three

cards each requiring 25 targets to be shot. The

weather was very typical coastal showers for the

competition and plenty of tricky wind.

Tiffany Tarrant earned first place scoring 739.28

and Patrick Simpson second scoring 732.30.

Once again a huge congratulations to these very

talented Duval junior shooters.
