Durham County Council is developing a new markets strategy and street trading policy and is seeking the views of residents, shoppers and traders in order to ensure they are taken into account. The strategy is aimed at improving local markets and boosting town centre economies, for example by having more speciality markets, improving access for disabled people, having a wider mix of local traders and increasing customer numbers. At the end of May, Cabinet members agreed to explore the possibility of alterna- tive management arrange- ments in the future for the ten markets currently controlled by the county council. A consultation has been launched, which will run until Thursday, 23rd August and will look at a wide range of issues relating to markets and street trading. Owen Cleugh, consumer protection manager at Durham County Council, said, “We’re asking people to give us their views so that we can take their feedback into account as we develop the plans.” There are a number of ways people can take part in the consultation. An online survey can be found at www.durham.gov. uk/consultation. An event will be held to enable interested parties, including traders and residents, to look at and feed back on the proposals. This will take place on Tuesday 10th July at Bishop Auckland Town Hall, between 4pm and 9pm. Durham County Council will have its own market stall where people can take part in the consultation. The market stall will be at Bishop Auckland Market on Saturday 28th July. Top award goes to West Auckland Football Club West Auckland Football Club has been honoured with a top award to commemorate reaching a Wembley cup final. The Club has received Durham County Council’s, Chairman’s Medal for their outstanding achievement in reaching the Carlsberg FA Vase Final against their Northern League counter- parts Dunston. While West lost out 2-0 in May’s final, the then chairman of Durham County Council, Cllr Dennis Morgan, felt their magnificent feat merited the Chairman’s Medal. Due to the club’s hectic schedule leading up to the final, it was not until today that the West Auckland players and officials were able to visit County Hall, Durham to receive their award. Cllr Morgan, said, “It was a wonderful achievement by West Auckland to reach the final at Wembley and this award is fully merited. “They highlighted the great strength of football in this region and the whole of County Durham was rightly proud of their exploits. “I was fortunate enough to attend the final and met people from all over the county many affiliated to other clubs – who for 90 minutes were fervent West Auckland fans. “From the first time you pull on a pair of football boots it’s every boy’s dream to run out at Wembley – the home of football - and for the players of West Auckland it was a dream that turned to reality. The result did not quite go their way, but fingers crossed, they go on and reach the final again next year and win it.” West Auckland Football Club General Manager, Stuart Alderson (front centre), receives the Chairman’s Medal from Cllr Dennis Morgan watched by the present Durham County Council Chairman, Cllr Linda Marshall, JP along with club officials and guests.

Carers from Auckland Park Hospital in Bishop Auckland were recently given the chance to take a break from caring for others and to do something for themselves.Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Auckland Park, held an event to give carers some time out from their busy lives to indulge in some relaxation activities during National Carers Week. They were treated to pampering sessions including hand massages, make-up consultation and hair styling, and also had

A ‘Fabulicious’ event, held at Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield on Sunday 20th May was a complete sell out.Bishop Auckland Community Events hosted the event, at which 120 ladies enjoyed lunch, an afternoon of shopping and a fashion show.

the opportunity to take part in tai chi, health checks and Wii Fit sessions run by Age UK.Councillor Charlie Kay, Mayor of Bishop Auckland, also visited the event to see the work taking place at the hospital and to talk to service users and carers about their experiences. Councillor Kay said, “Auckland Park is a fantastic hospital with wonderful staff and carers. I wanted to see for myself the excellent services that are provided in the local community and also hear first hand from carers about their experiences.”

Carer’s Week is a UK-wide celebration of the con-tribution carers make to those they care for, and to their local communities.David Gilbert, Community Services Team Manager from Auckland Park Hospital said, “The carers of our service users are so important to us and we wanted to give them a little bit of pampering and time to themselves. Many carers don’t get much free time and we believe it’s very important that they look after their own health and wellbeing, as well as that of the people they care for.”

£1,000 was raised in support of The Star Fund, set up to assist with future developments at The New Endeavour Radiotherapy and Oncology unit at James Cook Hospital for the benefit of cancer patients from South Durham, Teesside and North Yorkshire.

Man arrested for attempted murder of PCA man was arrested last week on suspicion of attempted murder after a police officer was hit by a car during an undercover operation aimed at tackling burglary in Bishop Auckland. The officer, who was in plain-clothes was hit when a motorist appeared to drive directly at him before speeding off, leaving the injured officer on the ground. The 37-year-old officer, who is based in Bishop Auckland, landed on the ground after going over the top of a Vauxhall Vectra. He was taken to University Hospital, North Durham where he was treated for injuries to his

body and legs.Officers pursued the car, arresting a 33-year-old local man on suspicion of attempted murder when the vehicle stopped on Tenters Street. Lee Johnston, landlord at the Tut ’n’ Shive pub, was told about the incident by a friend who rang him to say there was police activity in Westgate Road, which runs behind the pub. He said, “My friend had just left and was talking to the officers when it happened. He said the car drove straight at the officer. The car didn’t stop, it was a hit-and-run. “There was a lot of police

activity and it was not nice to see the officer on the floor. Officers were on the street speaking to people and stopping vehicles a week after a spate of burglaries in the town. Thieves caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage when they targeted Labrokes, in Saddler Street, and Thorntons, in Newgate Street in the early hours of Thursday 19th June. They left empty-handed from Thorntons, but stole a safe from Ladbrokes. Witnesses to the collision, which happened at about 1am, are asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.

The next meeting of the Henknowle Residents’ As-sociation will be held on

Henknowle R.A.Monday, 23rd July at 6pm in the Manor pub. All are welcome to attend.

Woodhouse on WednesdayThe next Woodhouse on Wednesday (WoW) meetings will be held on 11th and 18th July. On the 11th, Ann Hunt will give a talk on the Sunderland Empire, while on the 18th, local author, Hazel Stephenson will give a talk about her book, ‘Land Girls

Thousands brave rain to enjoy town’s music festivalThousands of pop and opera fans braved the rain to enjoy a three day feast of entertainment at Bishop Auckland’s Music and Arts Festival last weekend.Organisers of the popular annual event had to wait until Friday morning – just hours before it was due to open – before obtaining the go ahead from health and safety advisors following the torrential rain and flash floods which hit the region on Thursday night - 28th June. But despite this uncer-tainty – and further heavy showers on Saturday afternoon – more than 6,000 people went to see top name performers including X Factor winner Joe McElderry and former Squeeze, Mike + The Mechanics and Roxy Music vocalist Paul Carrack. The Tyneside singer, who won ITV’s X Factor in 2009 and Popstar to Opera Star last year, made a guest appearance at Bishop Auckland College’s Proms. The Proms concert, which ended the event, also included performances by the Hurworth Concert Band, St John’s School Orchestra and the Cobweb orchestra with guest violinist Min-Jin Kym.Paul Carrack appeared on Saturday as part of a full line up from 12noon to 10pm. His impressive list of credits includes

hits The Living Years, Over My Shoulder and Silent Running, and he has worked with artists including Elton John and Eric Clapton.Pop rock five piece band ‘The Silence’, who have recently toured Europe and recorded in the US, headlined on the opening night, Friday.Kevin Burns, Head of Marketing at Bishop Auckland College, said, “This is our fifth Music and Arts Festival and given the torrential downpours last

Thursday night we had real concerns we would be forced to cancel just hours before the event was due to start.“But despite a few heavy showers on Saturday afternoon the crowds still turned out in their thousands and the sun came out for the headline acts on each of the three nights. Joe McElderry, Paul Carrack, The Silence and all of the other performers put on a great show which the audience clearly enjoyed.”

Paul Brownson, of Bylands Close, St. Helen Auckland, entered four guilty pleas to charges presented at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court recently. The 26 year-old took a Vauxhall Astra without the consent of the owner, drove on the A688 in West Auckland whilst over the legally prescribed limit of alcohol, and drove without a licence or insurance. The court heard that around 3am on the morning of Tuesday 12th June, a marked police car was on patrol when officers noticed the Vauxhall Astra pulling out of Station Road. The officers at first thought that the vehicle was an unmarked police car and stared into the car, which was being driven by Brownson. He drove off hurriedly, abandoning the vehicle in Millbank Close, where he ran off down a back street pursued by police. The

police dog section later found him hiding behind a garden fence. The vehicle belonged to a friend, Mr. Turner, whom Brownson had accompanied to his home, where they had been drinking. The friend left the house and, finding himself alone, Brownson had taken the car keys deciding foolishly to drive the short distance home. Bownson’s original account to the police stated that he had not been driving the car but he could give no reasons for being in the area at the time of his arrest. The court learned that in September 2002 Brownson had been disqualified from driving for drink driving offences and that in 2003 he was found guilty of driving whilst disqualified. Magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe requested a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service and stood matters down.

Would-be Roman warriors are looking forward to the re-enactment of the year as those regimented Romans invade Binchester Fort again. The weekend of July 14th and 15th promises not to disappoint with the Celts and Romans back at log-gerheads at the popular attraction near Bishop Auckland. Alongside the re-enactments will be a host of historical treats too, with an exhibition of artefacts recently excavated on site and displays of ancient crafts and sports.Durham County Council’s head archaeologist, David Mason, sets the scene with a tour of the site before allowing battle to commence. He said, “This is history at its best. The weekend festival provides a vivid and exciting insight into real Roman times. It’s a must for the young and young at heart; with everything from artefacts excavated on site to Roman horseback riding displays by Barbaratus, not forgetting of course the

Barbaratus the Roman cavalryman.

It’s those regimented Romans in Binchester again!

battle royal!”The programme of events begins at 11am both days and is then repeated at 2.30pm and includes dem-onstrations of archery,

Students ‘graduate’ from college aged just four

Graduates’ Jack Nesbitt, Hannah Nesbitt, Zack Wilkinson and Sam Wilkinson.

Children who attend a Bishop Auckland college’s nursery enjoyed a graduation ball and presenta-tion ceremony as they left to start school this summer. The 37 children, aged four and five, enjoyed the full cap and gown treatment when they were presented with graduation scrolls by Vice Principal Natalie Davison, as more than 100 parents, carers and family members looked on.Nursery manager Jackie Bennett said, “It was a very emotional evening for the staff and families as we have cared for many of these children since they were tiny babies. We are privileged to

Hospital radio team express gratitude for donationsThe team at Auckland Hospital Radio have expressed their thanks to the people and organisa-tions who have helped them after the station was burgled last month. The Station, which broadcasts 24 hours a day to Bishop Auckland Hospital and is entirely run by volunteers, had thousands of pounds worth of equipment stolen during the break-in at their studio complex, but they were not prepared for the group of local residents and organisations who rallied together to replace the equipment, and help the charity. Audio Technica, the company who make some of the stolen microphones, were the first to contact the station and offer a free replacement of broadcast microphones, which could

have cost the station hundreds of pounds. Mr Billy Elliott, a visitor to the hospital, donated a radio microphone and mini-disc machine from his own collection after hearing about the station’s plight. Bishop Auckland Con-servatives provided a cash donation, via Coun-cillors Rowlandson and Richardson, as part of their Member's Initiative Fund, and Bishop Auckland Rotary have expressed an interest in helping the charity. Trustee, Chris Nisbet, said “Members were devastated by the break-in, but have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local residents and organisa-tions. For once presenters do not have enough words to express their gratitude. In a time when things are financially difficult for

everyone it is an amazing response. “We have also been assisted by County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust in making changes to the studio, and making it more secure. We would like to thank Hospital Management and the Security Team who have not wasted any time in making our members feel safer in the place they love to volunteer their time.”The Charity, which is cel-ebrating its 9th year in the new Hospital, is embarking on its Annual 60 Hour Marathon Broadcast on Friday 6th July. If you wish to know more about Hospital Radio, or wish to join the volunteers, contact Station Chairman, Craig Robinson at [email protected], call 01388 455453 or visit www.ahr.org.uk.

Bishop Auckland’s Asda store recently launched a Chosen by You, Given by Us programme, whereby the supermarket donates £300 to help local school and community projects, charities and causes. Throughout the two month period, customers and colleagues then vote for their choice.

The three chosen for April and May were ‘A Smile for a Child’, which received £200, ‘Auckland Hospital Radio’, which was given £50, and ‘Bishop Auckland College Nursery’ which was also awarded £50.A spokesperson for the store commented, “Asda would like to thank our customers for also contrib-uting to these three causes. The launch has been a huge success.” Check out the Community Board and vote your choice for June / July 2012.
