SAUDI ARABIA SEVERED DIPLOMATIC TIES WITH IRAN

The decision was announced by Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

It came amid a row over the Saudi execution of a prominent Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

Saudi Arabia on 2 January 2016 executed 47 people who were convicted of terror related offences.

This was the largest execution carried out by Saudi Arabia in three and a half decades.

The execution of Nimr al-Nimr also has come in for criticism from many Shia-dominated nations.

RADHA KRISHNA MATHUR TOOK OATH AS CHIEF INFORMATION

COMMISSIONER OF INDIA

Former Defence Secretary Radha Krishna Mathur was sworn in as the eight Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of India.

Mathur succeeded Vijai Sharma, who completed his tenure on 1 December 2015.

As the CIC, Mathur will have tenure of about three years, until he attains the age of 65 years.

French soldiers marched in presence of President Francois Hollande.

Hollande was the Chief Guest for 2016 Republic Day celebrations.

Since 1950, this was the first time that a foreign army participated in the 26 January parade.

Earlier in July 2009, Indian troops marched down the Champs Elysees in Paris along with French Army on the Bastille Day.

The Maratha light infantry, which is one of the oldest regiments of Indian Army, was the participant.

This is the fourth Chennai Open title for the Swiss player and the third consecutive win.

POLYGAMY MADE MANDATORY IN ERITREA

The notification was issued by Eritrea’s Department of Religious Affairs.

The law makes it mandatory for men of the nation to marry at least two wives.

Failing to adhere by the orders will lead to life imprisonment with hard labour.

It also says that women prevening their husbands from exercising it would spend the rest of their lives in jail.

The order was passed in lieu of the country facing a shortage of male population caused due to the civil war with Ethiopia.

SNOW LEOPARD SPOTTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NORTH SIKKIM

The elusive snow leopard was found during its pilot project in which camera traps were created in the region.

It project was taken up to understand the occurrence of snow leopards in the region.

The camera traps helped in yielding results with the first photos of the species.

The species was trapped at four different locations in North Sikkim.

Besides, the pilot project also helped in capturing mountain wildlife like rare Pallas Cat, Blue Sheep and the Tibetan Argali.

EMBRYOS

The license was granted by HEFA to the Francis Crick Institute.

Under the license, the institute is allowed to genetically modify human embryos for research purposes.

It will help to understand infertility and miscarriage issues.

With this, the UK became one of the first countries in the world to give authorization for experimentation on human embryos.

Earlier, China allowed similar research on a limited scale.

The PMFBY approved on 13 January 2016 is a path breaking scheme for crop insurance.

It will come into force from the 2016 Kharif season (from June to October in India).

It aims at boosting the agricultural sector of India.

It envisages a uniform premium of only 2 percent to be paid by farmers for Kharif crops and 1.5 percent for Rabi crops.

The premium for annual commercial and horticultural crops will be 5 percent.

TATA MOTORS, BHARAT FORGE TIED UP FOR $11 BILLION INDIAN

ARMY’S FICV PROGRAMME

FICV is an abbreviated form of Future Infantry Combat Vehicle.

The two firms tied up with General Dynamics for defense bid under FICV programme.

The Programme involves development of compact combat vehicles for the Indian Army.

These vehicles will replace Russian-designed BMP (Sarath BMP-II) series armed vehicles.

The nearly 10 billion US dollar project is touted as India’s largest indigenous defense program.

2016 SOUTH ASIAN GAMES CONCLUDED; INDIA FINISHED AT TOP WITH

308 MEDALS

The 12-day long event concluded at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.

2600 athletes from all the 8 SAARC countries participated in 228 events in 23 sports.

The games were conducted in 26 venues across the cities of Guwahati and Shillong.

India finished at the top with a record 308 medals - 188 Gold, 90 Silver and 30 Bronze.

With this, India improved its previous record of 214 medals in Colombo in 2006 games.

The next South Asian Games will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal in 2019.

The test paved the way for the first developmental flight of the GSLV Mark 3, the biggest rocket made in India in December 2016.

GSLV Mark 3 will be capable of launching 4-tonne satellites into geosynchronous orbit.

DELIVERY IN PUBLIC HEALTH FACILITIES

The decision is aimed at reducing Maternal Mortality Ratio and Infant Mortality Rate in India.

The birth companion has to be a female relative.

Birth companions are women who have experienced the process of labour.

She can provide continuous one-to-one support to other women experiencing labour and child birth.

WHO promotes labor companionship as a core element of care for improving maternal and infant health (WHO 2002).

PRIME MINISTER MODI LAUNCHED SETU BHARATAM PROJECT

The project aims to make all national highways free of Railway crossings by 2019.

208 places were identified for construction of rail over-bridges or underpasses.

Nearly 10200 crore rupees will be spent on it.

Around 1500 bridges which are over 50 to 60 years old will be demolished and rebuild.

The cost of rebuilding the old bridges is expected to be about 30000 crore rupees.

The Bill amends the Carriage by Air Act, 1972 that regulates carriage by air.

It gives effect to the Warsaw Convention 1929 and the Montreal Convention 1999.

It seeks to empower Union government to revise the limits of liability for airlines.

It also empowers the Government to provide for compensation as per the Montreal Convention.

Earlier, the bill was passed by the Lok Sabha in August 2015.

It also provides for application of the international aviation travel rules to domestic travel.

LABOUR ORGANIZATION

The report provides the latest ILO data on women’s position in labour markets.

It examines the factors behind trends and explores the policy drivers for transformative change.

The report says that gender equality in the workplace remains elusive.

It finds millions of women worldwide are not getting the same kind of quality, well-paying jobs as men.

Between 1995 and 2015, the global female labour force participation rate decreased from 52.4 to 49.6 percent.

If female employment rates were to match male rates, the GDP of India would increase by 27 percent.

4TH WORLD CONGRESS OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES HELD IN LIMA

The event was held from 14 March to 17 March 2016 under UNESCO.

CHAIRPERSON

The post was vacant since September 2015 when the commission was constituted.

At present, Justice Chauhan is heading the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal.

He was a judge of the Supreme Court from May 2009 to July 2014.

Justice Ravi R Tripathi was appointed as the member of the commission.

The Commission was constituted through Government Order with effect from 1 September 2015.

It has a three-year term, ending on 31 August 2018.

(AMENDMENT) BILL, 2016

The bill seeks to amend the Constitution Scheduled Castes Order 1950.

It was passed on proposal of Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Kerala, Odisha and West Bengal.

It wants to modify the list of Scheduled Castes in their states.

The proposal relates to the inclusion of certain communities, modification and removal of area restriction in respect of certain communities.

It also looks at exclusion of certain communities in the case of State of Odisha.

UNSDN RELEASED 2016 WORLD HAPPINESS REPORT

It is the 4th edition of the report and was released before UN World Happiness Day.

Denmark topped the list as the happiest place in the world.

Burundi was ranked at the bottom as the least happy nation.

India was ranked 188th out of 156 countries.

It says that countries where there was less inequality were happier overall.

TIME MAGAZINE RELEASED 30 MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE ON THE

The list was topped by the artist and entrepreneur Kanye West.

BRITISH MATHEMATICIAN SIR ANDREW WILES WON 2016 ABEL PRIZE

Wiles won the award for solving a centuries-old hypothesis, Fermat's Last Theorem.

Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway will present the award to Wiles in May 2016.

The Abel Prize is described as the mathematician's Nobel Prize.

UNESCO RELEASED eATLAS OF GENDER INEQUALITY IN EDUCATION

The eAtlas shows gender gaps from primary to tertiary education of girls and boys.

Gender disparities remain highest in the Arab States, sub-Saharan Africa and South and West Asia.

One out of eight children between the ages of 6 and 15 are denied a basic education.

Globally, about 10% of all girls roughly between the ages of 6 and 11 are denied the right to education.

PARLIAMENT PASSED SIKH GURDWARAS (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2016

• The bill seeks to amend the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 retrospectively with effect from October 2003.

• It proposes to exclude Sehajdharis from voting in Sikh body polls. • The proposed amendment was carried out by the MHA Notification on 8 October 2003

that debarred Sahjdhari Sikhs voting rights. • However, the notification was quashed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 20

December 2011.

ISRO’S SEVENTH NAVIGATIONAL SATELLITE IRNSS 1G LAUNCHED

IRNSS 1G was launched into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit on-board PSLV-C33

It was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota.

This launch helped India to join the elite group of nations with their own navigation system technology.

The satellite with a design life span of 12 years has two payloads for navigation and ranging.

PM Modi termed the system as NAVIC (Navigate with Indian Constellation).

LOBSANG SANGAY RE-ELECTED PM OF TIBETAN GOVERNMENT-IN-EXILE

Lobsang has been the Prime Minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile since 2011.

He defeated his only rival - Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament Pempa Tsering by 9012 votes.

The names of all the 45 elected members of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile were declared.

It was the 2nd election since Dalai Lama stepped down as the head of the government in-exile in 2011.

Tibetans living in exile cast their votes in 40 countries.

JAPAN UNVEILED TOKYO 2020 OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPICS EMBLEMS

The emblems are designed by Asao Tokolo.

The Olympic logo features a circular Japanese traditional checkered pattern.

Below the design are the words Tokyo 2020 and under them the five interlocking Olympic rings.

The design is meant to express a refined elegance and sophistication that exemplifies Japan.

CHINA SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED KUNPENG-1B SOUNDING ROCKET

• The rocket reached a maximum height of 316 kilometres with the total flight time coming to 10 minutes.

• The head of the rocket was equipped with a new altitude control system. • New materials of flexible carbon fibre were also used in the rocket to enable easier

flight. • This is the first time Kunpeng 1B’s arrow configuration of altitude control system. • This rocket will fulfil mission of taking measurements in the upper atmosphere. • A sounding rocket is an instrument-carrying rocket designed to take measurements.

SHASHANK MANOHAR UNANIMOUSLY ELECTED AS INDEPENDENT ICC

• Manohar is the first elected independent Chairman of ICC. • He will serve for two-year term. • He resigned from the post of President of BCCI on 10 May 2016. • Before his election, the ICC approved amendments to accommodate an independent

ICC Chairman. • The amendments also included the abolishment of the President’s post with effect from

2016.

YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD

He was awarded for developing a low-cost electronically aided knee brace.

The brace allows an individual with a weakened leg to walk more naturally.

He shared the award with Kathy Liu who developed alternative battery component.

1st prize in the form of Gordon E. Moore Award went to Han Jie (Austin) Wang.

Wang developed microbial fuel cells that more efficiently convert organic waste into electricity.

INDIA'S FIRST REUSABLE SPACE SHUTTLE, RLV-TD LAUNCHED FROM

SRIHARIKOTA

The mission, known as the hypersonic flight experiment, was carried up on a solid rocket motor.

RLV-TD can put satellites into orbit around earth and then re-enter atmosphere.

Final version of the RLV-TD to be launched by 2030 will be 6-times larger than the experimented version.

It was built at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre by a team of 600 scientists.

HIMACHAL PRADESH BEGINS ARTIFICIAL PROPAGATION PROGRAMME

OF GOLDEN MAHSEER FISH FOR CONSERVATION

A hatchery with an outlay of 6 crore rupees has been set up to rear the Mahseer.

The hatchery has been set up at Machhial near Joginder Nagar town in Mandi district.

Golden Mahseer is also known as the tiger of Indian rivers.

The fish has been declared endangered by the IUCN.

RAKESH KUMAR MISHRA APPOINTED DIRECTOR OF CENTRE FOR

CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Mishra is a noted expert in the study of function of genes.

He joined Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in 2001 as a senior scientist.

He obtained his masters degree from Allahabad University.

CCMB is an Indian Biotechnology research establishment of the CSIR located in Hyderabad, India.

It is a designated Center of Excellence for Global Molecular and Cell Biology Network, UNESCO.
