Each year, New York Toy Fair is the place to show off the most prestigious and ground breaking toys.

Big brands, longstanding toy giants and independent toy makers gather to show off what they hope will be on shelves through the year.

In the brutally cold New York, there were a handful of toys that stood head and shoulders above the rest.

1. Thing Maker

Thing Maker from Mattel is an easy to use and safe 3D printer.

Using a free app you can create and customize toy characters, jewelry and all manner of other things. Pick the color and material than send them to the printer to make in 3D.

2. Nerf Modulus

Nerf offered a range of gun-play products this year. However if you think these are simple dart guns, think again. These included competitive Rivals line, Zombie Strike and super sized Mega line.

Best of all are the Modulus gins that can be customized in multiple ways — one even included a webcam to film your best shots.

3. Zoomer Chimp

Zoomer Chimp follows the success of Zoomer Dog with an articulated robot that can sense when you are near. It moves seamlessly from sitting to standing and offers a range of fun interruptions using latest sensory tech.

4. Bloxels

Bloxels is a super simple way to get kids created their own video games. By placing colored blocks on a grid you can scan in your designs, play them immediately and share with friends. It’s really simple and really powerful.

5. Big Robots

Big Robots is a re-imaging of the boxing Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots of the 60s. These are now fully functioning R/C controlled robots. Using Wii-like motion controls players steer and punch the air to get their robot doing the same in the ring. It’s exuberant fun that’s both active and strategic.

6. Torch Dinosaur PetFurReal Friends has a new animatronic pet in the form of Torch the friendly dinosaur. In addition to the usual moving parts, lights and voice, Torch can breath a fire-like mist to toast marshmallows.

It’s clever technology and all comes together to create a lovable character.

7. PJ Masks Toys

PJ Masks is a popular cartoon on the Disney Channel. Unusual the hero are children themselves.

At the toy fair we got the first chance to see PJ Mask light-up figures, headquarters and outfits that young fans had been clamoring for.

8. Destiny Mega BloksMega Bloks had a strong showing for some more mature fun. Their range of video game toys increased to include more from Halo, Call of Duty and the new Destiny game characters.

These sets are interchangeable but also offer a nice way to extend gaming time away from screens.

9. Star Wars Lego

Top Lego set at the show was vehicles and mini figures for new TV series LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures.

There had been much discussion online as to what the final two Star Wars sets would be, and now we have our answer.

10. Minecraft Drone Minecraft fans, and the parents of Minecraft fans looking for presents, will appreciate the Ghast R/C drone.

This takes a classic character from the game and turns it into a Remote Controlled flying toy.
