Shenzhen is a relatively new city and, as such, doesn’t have a lot of historical sites but don’t let that put you off; there’s still plenty to see and do in the city. Shenzhen is known throughout China for its abundance of theme parks but that’s not the only thing on offer; there are gardens, a temple and traditional Hakka architecture all within easy reach of the city centre. Here’s our list of ten of the best attractions in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen Window of the World:China’s largest miniature theme park includes models of the Eiffel Tower, Tower Bridge, Sydney Opera House, The Pyramids and even the Grand Canyon!

Kingkey 100:Shenzhen’s tallest skyscraper at 442meters tall, it dominates the city. The top four floors are a sky garden with panoramic views of Shenzhen and the countryside.

Happy Valley:This theme park opened in 2002. It’s got roller coasters, a water park, a rapids ride and a multitude of different scary, swing rides.

Crane Lake Fortified Hakka VillageThis is the biggest example of a traditional Hakka fortified settlement in China. It also houses the Hakka Culture Museum.

Chinese Folk Culture Village:In this theme park you can see examples of the architecture of China’s 56 ethnic minorities. There’s also snacks and handicrafts from each of the minority groups.

Hongfa Temple:The Temple was built on the terraces of Wutong Mountain and is a typical Buddhist temple with a Pagoda from which you can get a good view of Shenzhen.

Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens:There’s 6 different scenic areas in this 590 hectare park. Highlights include a forest of fossilised trees from Inner Mongolia and a boating lake.

Wutong Mountain:On a clear day you can see Hong Kong from the top of Wutong Mountain so the 2 or 3 hours that it takes to walk up it are well worth the effort.

OCT East Shenzhen:Another of Shenzhen’s famous theme parks; this one has four themed areas including a replica of a Swiss resort town.

Dapeng Fortress:The fortress was the sight of several key battles during the Opium Wars and has a history of over 600 years.
