Zebra Crossing Memorial

Location: Libson, Portugal

Grotesque as it may sound but this crosswalk creates awareness among pedestrians through the names of 137 pedestrians killed by cards stenciled on the zebra stripes. On the curb, it reads “1/4 das vítimas de acidentes de automóvel são peões” which translates as 1/4 victims of automobile accidents are pedestrians.

Love Zebra Crossing

Location: Chengdu, China

The Love Zebra Crossing is located close to where two rivers meet. It was created as an answer to the disregard many local drivers have for the typical black and white crosswalks in Chengdu where many accidents occur. The crosswalk has helped increase pedestrian traffic, some of whom even dress for the romantic occasion.

Scramble

Location: Oakland, California

These crosswalks in the streets of Oakland’s Chinatown feature a design that appear like a giant board game of scrambles. This was installed to help cut down the number of accidents and injuries during heavy traffic.

There is now a feature called the 15-second all pedestrians phase where vehicles stop for 15 seconds to allow pedestrians to cross at any direction, even diagonally.
