RPM TO SPEEDUse this formula to calculate your speed at a given RPM or your RPM at a given speed. The tyre diameter should be entered in inches and the gear ratio is the diff ratio multiplied by the gear ratio or just the diff ratio for a 1:1 top gear. To calculate in MPH use 336 instead of 209.

(Gear Ratio x 209) Tyre Diam. RPM ENGINE CAPACITYThis formula works in metric or imperial. If you enter the bore and stroke in Inches you will get the capacity of one cylinder in cubic inches (swept volume) and if you enter the bore and stroke in Centimetres you will get the capacity in CC. Then multiply by the number of cylinders.

Swept Vol. = Bore x Bore x Stroke x .7854

ENGINE CAPACITY CC (Bore & Stroke in Inches)This formula gives you the volume of the one cylinder in CC (swept volume) when you enter the bore and stroke in inches. You can use the volume of one cylinder to calculate compression ratio or multiply by the number of cylinders to find the engine capacity.

Swept Vol. = Bore x Bore x Stroke x 12.8703

COMPRESSION RATIOTo calculate the compression ratio, divide the volume at BDC by the volume at TDC. The volume at TDC is the volume of the combustion chamber plus the head gasket and piston dish (or minus piston dome). The volume at BDC is the TDC volume plus the volume of the cylinder (swept volume). To find the swept volume in CC, use the formula above for engine capacity but this time do not multiply be the number of cylinders. In the example below we will calculate the compression ratio for a 383 stroker (4.030” bore x 3.750” stroke) with 64cc combustion chambers, a 9cc head gasket and a 12cc dished piston.

Swept Vol. = Bore x Bore x Stroke x 12.8703

Compression Ratio = TDC Vol + Swept Vol TDC Vol

Example: 4.030 Bore x 3.750” Stroke with 64cc Chamber, 12cc Dish & 9cc Head Gasket

1. Swept Volume: 4.030 x 4.030 x 3.750 x 12.8703 = 783.8447cc2. TDC Volume: 64 + 9 + 12 = 85cc3. BDC Volume: 783.8447 + 85 = 868.8447cc4. Compression Ratio: 783.8447 + 85 = 10.221 85 INJECTOR SIZINGTo calculate injector size you need to know how much horsepower your engine makes and divide by the number of injectors to find horsepower per injector. The formula below assumes a brake specific horsepower of 0.5 and injector duty cycle of 80%. Use the reverse formula to calculate the horsepower rating of an injector from it’s flow rate.

To calculate injector size:

Lb/Hr = HP CC = HP 1.6 0.1523

To calculate Horsepower: HP = Lb/Hr x 1.6 HP = CC x 0.1523 HORSEPOWER TO TORQUEThis formula shows the relationship between power, torque and RPM. If you know how much torque you are making at a given RPM you can calculate horsepower and if you know the horsepower you can calculate torque. HP = RPM x Lb/Ft Lb/Ft = HP x 5252 5252 RPM
