Tools needed and finding the filesTools needed are here: http://www.rallygamer.com/dirtrally/tools/texture-design-tools.html

Go and find the car you’re gonna mod and make sure you back up the files.

Location: […]\Steam\SteamApps\common\DiRT Rally\cars\models (List of cars at the bottom)

In this example i will use the Ford Fiesta Rally car, which is called "ffr" in the models folder.

Chose the livery you want to replace, in this case I know livery_44 is the plain blue skin.

Locate the texture_high folder and you should see the files needed.

The original files are saves as a Compressed PSSG, it's kind of like a ZIP Archive, but they have to be opened with the PSSG Editor from the website.

Use the PSSG Editor and open up xxx_tex_high_##, which in this case is: ffr_tex_high_44

Main skinTo edit the basic skin, locate the xxx_main.tga file, inside the PSSG and export it (Textures -> Export Texture).

Open it in Photoshop or any other compatible imaging software (GIMP can be used as it supports the DDS tool), edit the skin to your liking.

(When editing I recommend using the specocc to get a better depth so you can see what part goes where).

Then save the file using the specifications from the rallygamer website, since the file we’re editing is the xxx_main.tga file, we need to save it as a “DXT1, ARGB, 4bpp, 1 bit alpha” MAKE SURE YOU SAVE IT AS A .DDS FILE!

When you’re done with that, go to the “Importing the texture and saving” section.

Glass

Editing the class texture is very similar to the Main skin, you Export the xxx_glass.tga file and open it in any compatible image editor.

Once you have edited the windows to your liking DO NOT SAVE YET, we have to edit the Alpha layer, so if our image looks like this:

The alpha layer will have to look like that aswell, so like this:

Not entirely sure why, but my guess is that everything that is white on the alpha layer, will not be see through (glass textured).

The glass texture will have to be saved as a “DXT5, ARGB, 9bpp, interpolated alpha”

Importing the texture and saving. To import the texture you created open up the PSSG editor on the same livery you edited, select the texture you edited in this example I will use ffr_main.tga, go to Textures -> Import Texture and find your texture.

After this is done go to File -> Save -> Save as Compressed and replace the original PSSG file(It has to be compressed if not, the texture will glitch out in-game)

Now you should be able to open Dirt Rally and chose the texture in-game, the picture in-game won’t change and will look like the original texture.
