In this environmentally conscious age, furniture manufacturing has become asmuch about looking after the environ-

ment, maximising yield, cutting waste andsafeguarding employees as it has aboutproducing fine designs and making profit.According to tooling specialist Leuco, thetooling you choose can have a significanteffect on all of the above.

The advent of the lightweight board hasresulted in a plethora of new fixings whichhave been designed to work with honey-comb structures. Honeycomb structuresthemselves are not new. Doors have beenmanufactured with honeycomb centres formany years. However, unlike doors (inwhich the components are usually pro-duced separately by means of framelaying), furniture components are gener-ally cut from larger panels. For the machining of lightweight panelsLeuco has developed a range of toolswhich enables manufacturers to utilise the‘support edge method’ in which décoredges are glued into the board in an up-stream process. Leuco’s simplest entrylevel version can be used on table shapers

while its high-end adjustment cutter offersfine tuning without dismounting and is de-signed to provide excellent quality for sta-tionary and throughfeed machines.

Another problem which Leuco hassolved is that of longevity with nesting cut-ters. For nesting of components with straightedges, it is common practice to use HW-tipped shank-type cutters with a diameter of8-12mm. However, when machining lami-nated boards with a finished edge for glue-jointing, HW-tipped cutters lose their sharp-ness all too soon. Leuco’s solutions includea finish-cut cutter with a diameter of 16mm- the Leuco DIA-Profile cutterhead - andECO-Pro. The configuration of cutting edgesis optimised to provide long edge liveswhich, claims Leuco, means the edge life ofthe cutter is up to two-and-a-half timesgreater, reducing downtime. Leuco’s DIA-Profiler is the tool recommended formedium to large batch sizes while the ECO-Pro, with its turnover knife design, is a par-ticularly economical solution for smallbatch sizes. Leuco maintains that because ofthe specially adapted cutting edges and toolbody, their nesting tools will provide you

toolingMaximise yield, reduce

waste and cut noise levels- Leuco’s claims for theirnew generation tooling. for today

with improved material yield and reducedcutting pressures - and they’ll offer you re-duced incidence of tools dislodging.

In the field of solid wood processing -specifically glue-laminated timber -Leuco’s Finger Joint Cutter, with its fingerlength of 4/4.5mm, has been designed tooffer higher feed rates. Its HS finger jointcutters have an increased number of cut-ting edges which are treated with a specialfinish (Leuco Topcoat) and, say Leuco, thisresults in increased efficiency and produc-tivity. The company also offers a hoggerprogramme for finger jointing machineswhich have a cross-cutting unit.

For chop, mitre and table saws, Leucohas developed a new sizing blade, the G5which, it is claimed, offers much reducednoise levels. The tooth configuration is de-signed to enable fast cutting with tear freeedges across a range of materials. Leucoclaims a noise reduction of up to 10dB “oreven higher”. The G5 features a thin kerffor minimal waste and is designed to offerextremely low vibration.

Hamuel Reichenbacher has specialised exclusively in the de-sign and manufacture of machining centres for more than 30years and, in 1985, introduced their first 5-axis machines intothe woodworking and furniture industries

The company’s machines are built to an uncompromisingstandard and are well known for their outstanding reliabilityand long life. Today’s new generation of modular CNCmachining centres provides customers with outstanding three-dimensional machining, combined with high flexibility, fast set-up and positioning accuracy of the working aggregate.

All the machines have the capability to machine the most-complex designs including sweeping curves and bows. HamuelReichenbacher machines are supplied with Siemens Sinumerik-control and have all machine electrical components providedby Siemens.

Above: Switching from the standard four postbridge gantry to a more expansive portal means

that two 5-axis heads can run independently alongthe Y-axis in Reichenbacher’s new Vision-L. Thanksto the machine’s extremely rigid construction, twoheads with comprehensive additional tooling can

cover many different application fields.

Above: The popular Vision machining centre has been further developed to include two additionalmodels: Vision-L and Vision-U. A key feature of the new models is the increased portal space withinthe bridge to accommodate a greater variety of working heads. Combined with a wide choice of tabledimensions, these new Visions can provide a much wider travel on the Y-axis, allowing two large 5-axis heads to operate diametrically opposite each other.

A variety ofconventional table systems isalso available including matrixbed with different clampingareas, open-type withautomatically sinkable rollersand pneumatic clamping andfixed table with pneumaticallysinkable rails.

Above: Hamuel Reichenbacher reports that further improvements have been made tothe successful ArtisX 5-axis machining centre. It is now available with a fully automatictable complete with auto beams, pods and stops which automatically positionthemselves to suit the workpiece. The upgraded machine also includes a 14kW spindle,22-place tool changer and an easy-to-use operating software package.

Above: The ECO is a self-contained, rigid, heavy-duty CNC machining centre that offersthe highest levels of flexibility and productivity. Its vibration-free fixed gantry has two or

three supports, depending on the table size and the option for one or more aggregateslides at the rear of the gantry. The ECO is ideal for nesting applications and can be

supplied as a turnkey package with options such as self-setting pin-tables orprogrammable beam tables with quick-setting clamping devices.

Wagner Engineering’s objective in developing the newand unique AirCoat gun line was to reduce operator fa-tigue. This they have achieved with the GM 4100AC andGM 4600AC.

Both sizes are available with 160 and 250 bar offeringenhanced ergonomic interaction and a premium finish. With 437 gram, the GM 4100AC is the lightest gun in themarket and has a small handle that fits to smaller hands. The GM 4600AC includes a long filter and has a regularhandle.

The AirCoat process - Airless and Air - has a uniqueability to uniformly atomise the coating material at rela-tively low pressure (from approximately 60 bar). This isachieved by means of a central air guide (air cap) that ismounted directly on the nozzle body and surrounds thesprayed medium on all sides. The reduced overspray andmaterial savings are up to 15% over the Airless process andup to 40% over air atomization. Due to improved air guid-ance, Wagner AirCoat* technology offers a soft and uniformspray pattern for high quality surfaces and reliable coatingresults.

The new AirCoat guns offer a broad range of acces-sories and add-ons. The main application areas encompasswoodworking and furniture industry, corrosion protection, steel industry and agricultural machinery industry. All kindsof materials like stains, textured paints, solvent and waterbased paints as well as 2K materials, high solids and UVpaints can be used.

Hubtex has worked in the furniture industry for manyyears assisting companies in reducing damage by muchbetter product handling at all stages of it’s life. Handling aproduct better also leads directly to improvements insafety and productivity levels.

As an example, worktops and laminate sheets can be achallenge as the product can be awkward and time con-suming to handle. Rather than use traditional methods ofbringing full packs of product down from storage to theground, Hubtex trucks can take the operator(s) straight tothe pick face. This saves an enormous amount of time, ef-fort and damage, as most is done when multi handling ofthe product by a standard fork truck takes place.

Dedicated picking platforms are available where theonly role required is to pick and these are ideal for multicomponent orders or fast, mixed production runs. Thisunique product is a twin mastered fork truck which allowspicking from both sides of the aisle. Where equipmentwith more versatility is required, Hubtex can providea detachable picking platform. This allows bulk storage ofproduct and, when picking is required, the platform isattached to the truck. The truck is then driven fromthe platform, allowing precise control of truck placementand consequently accurate picking.
