J&S offers an array of end mills, drills, ream-ers, saw blades, abrasives, and taps. Additional options are available for work holding, gauging, threading, milling, and turning. Automated tool crib systems and metalwork-ing/cleaning fluids round out the company’s offerings.

Its tool-ing production area includes four ANCA 7-axis CNC tool grinders and a wide range of other equip-ment. It can produce tooling from 1/4” to 1½” in diameter and up to 14” in length. It can handle toler-ances as close as +/-0.0001”. All coatings and treatments are avail-able. A complete machine shop is also on site for jigs, fixtures and other products.
J&S currently services indus-tries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, metal fabricators, mill working, tool & die, and general machine shops. The company has been recognized as a Boeing Silver Supplier for its quality and delivery performance.

Mittler Brothers Machine & Tool is celebrating its 35th anniver-sary and has installed new equip-ment.
The family-owned firm produc-es, tools, dies and special machines as well as offering engineering, design, custom CNC machining, fabrication and finishing. The company also produces its own lines of products for the racing industry.
The Mittler brothers (Mike and Paul) started their business with the two of them as the only employees in a 2,500-sq.-ft. facility. Their first business plan was created at their parent’s kitchen table. The continued growth of the company now has the company in a facil-ity with 58,000-sq.-ft. in Wright City. A wide range of machining and fabrication equipment includ-ing automated pallet cells help the company maximize its efficiency and reduce turnaround time.
Recent equipment installa-tions include: A Milltronics ML35 combination lathe; a Milltronics BR6150 IL bridge mill (capacity of 150” x 60” x 28”) and a Koike Aronson Supergraph IV CNC hi-def plasma cutter. The company also offers wet painting and shot blasting.
Mittler Brothers works with steel, tool steel, aluminum, stain-less steel, brass, bronze, titanium and other exotic metals. Its projects range in size from fitting in a shoe box to taking multiple trailers to deliver.
It serves such industries as petroleum, automotive, medical, heavy transportation, performance racing and automation.
As the brothers talked about the company’s history and growth, the words “team” and “teamwork”

“The problem of our age is the proper administration of wealth, so that the ties of broth-erhood may still bind together the rich and poor in harmonious relationship.” Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1919)
Our thoughts turned to
Andrew Carnegie recently when we read about the Security & Exchange Commission’s new disclosure rules for large public companies. How would Carnegie be viewed today?
Starting on Jan. 1, 2017, the SEC will require a public com-pany to disclose the ratio of the compensation of its chief execu-tive officer (CEO) to the median compensation of its employees.
This ratio information will need to be in registration state-ments, proxy and information
statements, and annual reports that call for executive compensation disclosure. (Executive “salaries” have always been available in an-nual reports.)
The SEC says the disclosure will allow companies to see what their peers are paying and by establishing consistent pay-for-performance standards it could pressure them to change their practices if they lag behind.
Critics say it’s another costly regulation that interferes with the free market and is meant to shame companies into compliance.
Whatever happens, these large public companies have no one to blame but themselves. It’s no se-cret that public outrage over sala-ries and perks for executives and directors, plus outlandish golden parachutes for poor performance, has been rising steadily since the late 90’s. Our on-going “non-recession” has only made the gap more noticeable.
Now, back to Andrew Carn-egie. Carnegie was a poor boy from Scotland, that had to forego school to support his family. Brian Apelt’s, book: The Corporation: A Centennial Biography of U. S. Steel Corp., 1901-2001, provided much of our information about Carnegie’s business life.
Carnegie got a job at a telegraph office and learned to translate incoming clicks by ear rather than reading them as dots and dashes.
This bright lad was soon no-ticed and hired by Thomas Scott of the Pennsylvania Railroad who made him region superintendent. Scott later persuaded Carnegie to buy $500 of stock in a new company.
It was a huge sum, but Carne-gie convinced his mother to mort-gage their home. Receiving the first dividend check, money made not by his own sweat, convinced Carnegie that this was the goose

that lays the golden eggs. In a few years the stock was paying $1,400 in annual
dividends and Carnegie invested in railroad sleeping cars, oil and banks. He went in with friends to buy a farm out in oil country for $40,000. The deal paid a million dollars in dividends in a single year.
Then Carnegie purchased a share in a local iron works near Pittsburgh and this put him on his path to experiment with the Bessemer steel process and conclude it worked best with phosphorous-free iron ore. He discovered this ore in Michigan and could ship it cheaply to his plant through a new series of canals and railroads.
Apelt writes: “America had a bounty of rich iron ore, a cheap means of getting it to the steel centers, some amaz-ing new technologies to cook up steel that was strong and durable, and a new generation of tinkerers, engineers and inventors to find ways to put the metal to work. The coun-try was poised to become the ruler in steel. And, the throne would belong to Andrew Carnegie.”
It was at this time that Carnegie wrote a letter to him-self. “By this time two years I can so arrange all my busi-ness as to secure at least $50,000 per annum. Beyond this never earn–make no effort to increase fortune, but spend the surplus each year for benevolent purposes. Cast aside business forever except for others.”
(He wasn’t able to keep this vow of resigning business at age 35.)
Apelt notes that in speaking to students, Carnegie always said liquor was one of the gravest dangers to a student’s dreams and warned against financial speculation (excluding himself, of course) with examples of ruined men and bankruptcies.
“In a two-part work entitled Wealth, published in 1889, Carnegie declared that it was the rich man’s duty (and his escape hatch from disgrace after death) to spend his for-tune during his lifetime ...It would recycle profits, easing anguish over the uneven job capitalism did of sharing wealth.”
Carnegie’s reputation was badly tarnished with the Homestead Mill strike in 1892 when the union went on strike and the Pinkertons were called in. Nine strikers and seven Pinkerton men died.
Carnegie, a Gilded-Age industrialist, was one of the “robber barons,” and a brutal competitor. In 1890 his aver-age steel worker earned $10 a week, just above the poverty line of $500 a year. It took the wages of 4,000 steelworkers to match Carnegie’s earnings.
He sold Carnegie Steel to J. Pierpont Morgan in 1900 for $480 million. Carnegie gave away over $350 million and provided buildings for 2,509 libraries in the U.S. and other countries.
So, how would Andrew Carnegie rank among the CEOs today?

Manufacturing & Distribution Leaders Not Ready For Leadership Change
by Tim Reynolds
Just 19 percent of manufactur-ing and distribution leaders say they are “very prepared” to face the challenge of an ownership or leadership change, leaving many of their businesses vulnerable during a difficult transition period.
That’s just one of the insights in CliftonLarsonAllen’s (CLA) an-nual industry survey. It goes on to reveal that, even though 45 percent of respondents anticipate a leader-ship transition in the next one to five years, 77 percent are either “somewhat prepared” or “some-what unprepared.”
“While it is critical for compa-nies to manage financial events and indicators, it is just as important to understand the nonfinancial events that can have an impact on the busi-
ness,” says Tim Reynolds, principal for manufacturing and distribu-tion with CLA. “We are about to experience one of the largest wealth transfers in U.S. history, but it looks like many business owners in the industry aren’t fully prepared.”
An estimated 9 million of America’s 15 million business own-ers were born on or before 1964; an estimated $11 trillion of their wealth will soon be transferred from one generation to the next.
“This will provide plenty of opportunity for businesses to grow through acquisition, or for the next generation owner to re-energize his or her organization and prepare it for the future,” Reynolds says.
Fifty percent of survey respon-dents said they anticipate that a leadership and ownership change
will occur at the same time. Reynolds calls this “one of the riskiest times for a business.”
He recommends planning ahead to ensure that the most qualified and experienced individuals take the reins of these companies and keep them prof-itable and growing. The process can be extremely emotional and may seem overwhelming, but it can be simplified and made much less stressful by creat-ing strategies that offer flexibility rather than predicting an outcome.
How CLA can help: CLA’s pro-prietary asset/liability planning tool can help business owners understand the impact of ownership changes and how a sale can affect lives and finan-cial well-being. CLA is a professional services firm focused extensively on privately held companies and their owners. They can help the owner of any size or type of business crystal-ize goals, create value, prepare for the transition, and preserve a legacy.
Learn more about what’s on the minds of manufacturing and distribu-tion leaders in CLA’s Manufacturing and Distribution Outlook. Download the full report at CLAconnect.com/Out-look2015.

June U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $355.43 million according to AMT, The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was up 4.6% from May’s $339.86 million but down 13.2% when compared with the total of $409.68 million reported for June 2014. With a year-to-date total of $2,157.64 million, 2015 was down 8.7% when compared with 2014. These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies par-ticipating in the USMTO program.
“This monthly boost in orders is good news at face value, but belies an overall sense of con-cern for U.S. manufacturing,” said AMT President Douglas K. Woods. “There was noteworthy activity in the aerospace, off road/highway construction, automotive, and contract machining industries. But if not for a dozen or so stand-out orders from those industries, it could have been another down month. Economic uncertainty both here and internationally continues to cause concern and hesitation to invest in capital equipment, yet opportunities remain within several core industry sectors.”
The United States Manu-facturing Technology Orders (USMTO) report, compiled by the trade association representing the production and distribution of manufacturing technology, pro-vides regional and national U.S. orders data of domestic and im-ported machine tools and related equipment. Analysis of manufac-turing technology orders provides a reliable leading economic indi-cator as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity.
AMT: Manufacturing Technology Orders Up In JuneAMT represents and promotes
U.S.-based manufacturing technol-ogy and its members, those who design, build, sell, and service the
continuously evolving technology that lies at the heart of manufactur-ing. For more information visit www.AMTonline.org.
