Odds & Ends

On Thursday 31st May 38 shedders travelled to Trafalgar to visit

the Holden Museum. Apart from the 10 members from DMS, there

were 12 from Upper Beaconsfield Shed, 6 from Berwick

Woodworkers, 6 from Cranbourne-Casey Shed, 2 from Bunnerong

Shed and 2 from Trafalgar Shed.

Organised by Geoff Cole, the shedders met up with their hosts:

Pete, Anne & Mick. Then followed two hours of wandering around

this extraordinary display of Holden vehicles plus many other

makes and models.

Then it was off to lunch at the Criterion Hotel where they were

made very welcome by the hotel management. A bonus was the

10% discount organised by the museum management.

Many thanks to all who attended.

Galloping Gourmet at Noojee Hotel

Organised by John Crosby (pictured above with

wife Norma and engrossed in conversation with

Harry Vyverberg), 19 members and wives/partners

from DMS enjoyed yet another in the “Galloping

Gourmet” series of treks to local pubs that serve

great food.

This time the “target” was the Noojee Pub

which lived up to its reputation of serving great

country food. As always on these trips, there was

much conviviality - helped along of course by the

odd glass of beer or wine.

As has been stated before, there’s nothing quite

like a two hour lunch.

Most people are satisfied to wear a single pair of

glasses at any one time. Others use bi-focal or

progressive lenses all the time. But for some

reason Dick Van Leeuwen chose to wear two pairs

of glasses at the same time during a morning

session at the shed.

As kids, we tagged people with glasses as “four

eyes”. Does this imply “six eyes” is now the

appropriate tag for Dick?

Brilliant doctor A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her

husband's temper and threatening manner. The

Doctor asks: "What's the problem?

The woman says: "Doctor, I don't know what

to do. Every time my husband comes home drunk,

he threatens to slap me around."

The Doctor says: "I have a real good cure for

that. When your husband comes home drunk, just

take a glass of water and start swishing it in your

mouth. Just swish and swish but don't swallow it

until he goes to bed and is asleep."

Two weeks later the woman comes back to the

doctor looking fresh and reborn..

The woman says: "Doctor that was a brilliant

idea! Every time my husband came home drunk, I

swished with water. I swished and swished, and he

didn't touch me! How does the water do that?"

The Doctor says: "The water does nothing. it's

keeping your mouth shut that does the trick...."

Tranny Surprise After a long night of making love, the guy notices

a photo of another man on the woman's nightstand

by the bed. He begins to worry.

'Is this your husband?' ... He nervously asks.

'No, silly,' ... She replies, snuggling up to him.

'Your boyfriend, then?' ... He continues.

'No, not at all,' ... She says, nibbling away at

his ear.

'Is it your dad or your brother?' ... He inquires,

hoping to be reassured.

'No, no, no! You are so hot when you're

jealous!' ... She answers.

'Well, who in the hell is he, then?' ... He

demands.

She whispers in his ear ... 'That's me before the

surgery.'

Just For A Laugh

Sex and Good English On his 74th birthday, a man got a gift certificate

from his wife. The certificate paid for a visit to a

medicine man living on a nearby reservation who

was rumoured to have a wonderful cure for erectile

dysfunction.

After being persuaded, he drove to the

reservation, handed his ticket to the medicine man,

and wondered what he was in for.

The old man slowly, methodically produced a

potion, handed it to him, and with a grip on his

shoulder, warned, 'This is a powerful medicine,

and it must be respected. You take only a

teaspoonful, and then say '1-2-3.' When you do

that, you will become more manly than you have

ever been in your life, and you can perform as long

as you want."

The man was encouraged. As he walked away,

he turned and asked, "How do I stop the medicine

from working?"

"Your partner must say '1-2-3-4,'" he

responded, "but when she does, the medicine will

not work again until the next full moon."

He was very eager to see if it worked so he

went home, showered, shaved, took a spoonful of

the medicine, and then invited his wife to join him

in the bedroom. When she came in, he took off his

clothes and said, "1-2-3!"

Immediately, he was the manliest of men. His

wife was excited and began throwing off her

clothes, and then she asked, "What was the 1-2-3

for?"

And that, boys and girls, is why we should

never end our sentences with a preposition,

because we could end up with a dangling

participle.

Maths Puzzle If 3 kiwi fruit = 9 then each kiwi fruit = 3

Then if 3 + 2 oranges = 5

we get 2 oranges = 5 - 3 = 2 Hence a single orange =1

Then if 1 + 2 broccoli = 15

we get 2 broccoli = 15 - 1 = 14 Hence a single broccoli = 7

Therefore a kiwi fruit + an orange + a broccoli

= 3 + 1 + 7 = 11

rather tight schedule to do a general

public presentation on an evening in

Organ Donation Week which occurs on the first

week of August. However, many of the

community groups won’t be ready in time, so the

presentation to the general public will now be held

on Wednesday 17th October at 7:30pm in the

Drouin Anglican Church Hall.

Prior to that event, we will also be conducting a

media campaign to raise a greater awareness

within the general public. Any DMS member

willing to help out with the various tasks involved

should contact Mick to advise their availability.

Having organised this campaign for Baw Baw

Shire, we have also contacted other key Men’s

Shed Organisations in other Shires comprising the

West and South Gippsland Men’s Shed Cluster,

inviting them to piggy-back on our project and

replicate the same within their Shire. The hope is

that some or all of them will be able to find the

resources to extend this very worthwhile project

beyond our limited boundaries.

A training session for DMS will be held on

Tuesday 19th June at 10am in the tea room at the

shed.

Shed Project Update

Organ Donation Project The Committee has accepted that

the Organ donation Project will be

a main project for the shed in 2018.

The aim is to increase the number

of residents from the Baw Baw

Shire on the Australian Organ

Donation Register by 20%. For

comparison, the increase in registrations for the

whole of Victoria in 2017 was only 4%.

The problem is that while 81% of the

population believes organ donation is a good thing,

only 33% are actually registered. We need to

engage with the other 48%. We also need to pick

up those who registered via their driver’s licence

some years ago because those state based

registrations no longer exist.

Co-ordinator for the project is Mick Nicholls,

who has already contacted 77 community groups

in Baw Baw Shire to ask them to come on-board

with us. A number have already responded and

asked for a presentation to their particular group.

Others are using the on-line resources of Donate

Life to conduct their own group training.

Initially, once most of the community groups

had received their training, we were planning on a

Find The Mistake There is nothing wrong

with the numbers. The

mistake is that the word

Tablet Trials

Do you wonder what

tablets are all about?

Do you yearn for one?

NO! Not the Diazepam

or Valium kind! The

electronic ones.

Well, help is at hand. The Shed has two tablets

that are available for members to borrow. We have

an Apple iPad and a Samsung Galaxy Tab. To try

one out, just talk to one of the Geeks in the

Computer Room (Tony, Graeme or Andy) and one

of them will arrange to give you a quick tutorial.

Then you can take one home and experiment

with it for a while. A week is the normal loan

period though that may be extended if there is not

a waiting list. You may just like to sit and try one

out for an hour or so at the Shed.

Trolley Tokens Shedders who have been

at the last Tuesday

briefings will have seen

the 3D printed tokens

that Andy Dyka has

made. These are used for

unlocking the

supermarket trolleys that

require either a $1 or $2 coin.

Aldi in Warragul uses these as do many other

places in other towns. They are still available for

$2 a pair for anyone who would like one.

Depending on the printed stock on hand, there

may be up to three different colours to choose

from.

If you would like a personalised set, possibly

as a surprise gift to a friend or partner - with

initials or name printed- the cost will be $3. Profits

from the sales of the tokens go to the Shed.

Can You Help? We are in need of someone willing to assist in

maintaining our Shed Website. You don’t have to

be a guru to do this and help is available to ensure

you gain the skills necessary to do a good job of

this.

My Health

Record

The Australian Government’s digital “My Health

Record” (MHR) has been around for some years

now. To date however it has been an “opt in”

system where you have to tell them that you want

to be part of the programme. That will change on

16th July this year when the system becomes “opt

out”.

MHR records all your important health

information like allergies, medical conditions and

treatments, medicine details and test or scan

reports all digitally available in one place for

access anywhere in Australia.

Authorized doctors, specialists and hospital

staff can upload your treatment details as they

occur and also have access anywhere and anytime

they need to - as for an accident or emergency for

example.

There are strict rules, regulation and high

security encryption to protect your privacy. For

the most part, you determine who has access.

Health insurance companies and employers (actual

or prospective) have no access.

If you haven’t done so already, you should ask

your GP to upload a shared health summary and to

ensure he/she keeps it up to date.

You are also encouraged to update your records

with anything you deem relevant to your health.

Then you won’t need to worry about having to

remember or repeat your health history. This

includes your medicines (prescribed or over the

counter), their approved dosage rates, details of

chronic conditions, any allergies or adverse

reactions, immunisations and the details of recent

pathology or other tests as well as emergency

contact information.

To find out more about MHR or to register go

to myhealthrecord.gov.au or phone 1800 723 471.

More On Stress

Following on from discussions

on depression and the role of stress in damaging

your health in the last two newsletters, the

symptoms of stress affecting your health as shown

here may help you to monitoring the issue:

Unusual weight changes (stress releases the

hormone cortisol which changes the way you

metabolise fat, protein and carbohydrates).

Breaking out in hives (stress can also

releases histamine into your system).

Difficulty concentrating (another problem

of too much cortisol).

Headaches (muscles tense up when you are

stressed, causing headaches or even

triggering a migraine).

Sore stomach (stress can cause the body to

produce more digestive acid, slow emptying

of the stomach and increase colon

contractions—all leading to heartburn,

bloating, cramping and/or diarrhoea)

Hair falling out (stress can trigger the hair

follicles to rest or cause the immune system

to attack the follicle)

A cold that won’t quit (stress suppresses

the immune system, making it difficult to

fight off bugs).
