E uropean Solheim Cup Captain and PING Pro Catriona Matthew visited on Monday to test G410 products and tune up for

this week’s Bank of Hope Founders Cup in Phoenix. We asked the nine-time Solheim Cup competitor about leading Team Europe in her native Scotland at Gleneagles, Sept. 13-15.

How does it feel to be captain on home turf? It’s a tremendous honor, fantastic. Being European, you don’t often get the chance to captain in your home country. For it to be in Scotland I couldn’t have asked for anything better. We’ve never lost in Scotland (wins in 1992 and 2000), so I want to keep that going!

Your favorite Solheim Cup memory. I have a few but one of my favorites was at Barsebäck (Sweden) in ’03. I was part of my first winning team, and I got the winning point. You’ll always remember your first winning team but to get the winning point made it all the more special.

What does the Solheim Cup mean to you? It’s the best event I’ve played. Golf is so individual, you don’t often get that chance to play on a team. The camaraderie you build up with your teammates, especially if you’ve played in a few, that’s very special.

How does the Solheim Cup compare to a major? For me, compared to a major I think there’s added pressure because you’re playing for your peers and not wanting to let them down. In a major or another tournament the only person who’s going to lose out if you don’t do well is you.

What message will you impart to your team? Well, not so much a message. It’s trying to keep everyone relaxed really so they enjoy the experience. Obviously, the main thing is to win because you’re going to enjoy it more if you win. I want to get to know the players better and understand their personalities and how to get the best out of them. We can’t rely on one or two players to get the points.

There was cause for celebration from PING pros at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Seamus Power (above) aced the 155-yard third hole with a Blueprint 8-iron on Saturday. In round one, Harris English added his own rare feat, recording an albatross, a double-eagle 2 on the par-5 11th from 236 yards. “I have an i500 3-iron that goes pretty far,” he said. “And I flushed it.” PING Pro Hunter Mahan made the only other 2 on the 11th in 2007.
