Tomaree High School's Year 10 Food Technology Students impress the local community with their stunning food

service and catering for the opening launch of the Bluewater Country Music Festival.

This year, Year 10 Food Technology students were introduced to a new unit of work called “Food Service and Catering”.

When Mrs Shaw was approached by Nelson Bay Business Chamber to do the catering for this event, she took it to the

Year 10 students and, in discussions with the Food Technology teachers, it was decided to work this event into their

assessment task. Students were assessed on their ability to work safely and hygienically in the workplace, teamwork and

communication and a range of skills involved with commercial cookery.

After working all day at school preparing the dishes, the students and all of the food was ferried

by parents to Broughtons at the Bay where 150 of our local community members were served.

It was a wonderful night and showcased yet again the great students we have at Tomaree High School. Every student

gave 100 percent cooking, serving and cleaning to the highest of standards.

Congratulations Year 10 Food Technology Students, you were amazing

and Ms Garling, Ms Page and I, (Mrs Shaw), are extremely proud of your

efforts.

From the desk of the Deputy Principal, 7 & 10…Mr Stevens An exciting time of year with assessment tasks being finalised and reports being written. Reports will go

home shortly and provide a valuable opportunity for parents and carers to engage in a quality conversation

about learning with their child. This is a great way to celebrate the success of our students and positively

reinforce the value of making their best effort towards learning in all settings.

Year 10 Subject choices for senior courses in 2018

We are only half way through 2017 and already deep into planning for next year. For our Year 10 students

this means reflecting on future pathways and considering the subject selections for study in Year 11 next

year.

The first big step in this process is the Parent Subject Information Evening which will be on NEXT WEEK. All

Year 10 students and their parents are encouraged to attend to go through the rules and structures for

planning their study pathways. It is on in the MPC on Tuesday 20th June starting at 5:30pm.

Student Assistance for parents experiencing financial difficulty

The weather is rapidly cooling and we ask for your assistance in ensuring your child remains in full school

uniform. Lowes has the complete range of school items - school jumpers etc. Our school is keen to maintain

our high standard of uniform and students, if necessary, will be required to change into provided uniform, as

required. If any assistance is necessary to achieve a full school uniform, please contact a Deputy Principal to

discuss supports available.

WannaCrypt/WCry Ransomware

As you would have seen in the media, a major malware outbreak has spread across the world affecting many

Windows computers running versions XP, 7, 8 and 10. The WannaCrypt Ransomware can spread via computer

networks and does not rely on a user opening an email attachment or visiting an affected website, making it

particularly destructive.

It is critical that all Windows PCs and user-managed Windows BYODs ensure that critical security update

MS17-010 has been installed on their device(s). The easiest way to achieve this is to open Windows Update to

determine if there are any outstanding updates and to apply them. On your Windows device, complete these

steps:

Click the Windows button to open the Windows menu and in the box, type Check for updates then press

Enter.

From the Desk of the Deputy Principal, 9 & 12 Ms D’Arcy…

Welcome to the last newsletter of this busy term and semester! Students are to be congratulated on their pos-

itive attitude and efforts in the recent NAPLAN tests and internal school exams. It is by having high expecta-

tions in learning combined with a can do attitude that students will experience success.

You will see from our school facebook page the number of outstanding results our students have once again

achieved in sporting endeavours. A special mention from me to one of our wonderful Year 9 students, Noah

Connick, who has been selected as part of the Northern NSW U15 AFL Team. Noah is an excellent example of

a student committed to both his sport and academic achievement. Well done Noah!

The University of Sydney has sent out information to schools about the Wingara Mura (Thinking Path) for Year

9 and 10 students - Bunga Barrabugu (To Make Tomorrow) for Year 11 and 12 students Summer Program. It is

open to any interested Aboriginal students aiming to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to

make connections between what is studied at school and options for the future. It starts on 14th January 2018.

If you are interested please see a staff member of the Aboriginal Education Team for further information.

Our performance students are busy in rehearsals for Star Struck. This takes up an enormous amount of their

time and that of their teachers. We really appreciate this and are looking forward to seeing another superb

show.

I have been talking to the Student Forum about student toilets. We are looking for ideas of how to improve

the toilets and keep them this way once the work has been completed. Any students who have ideas they

would like to be considered please let your Year representative know. The Forum meets each day in roll call in

H14.

Our Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (JAECG) recently took part in some Leadership Train-

ing with Leigh Ridgeway from the Department of Education. Congratulations to the following students who

As the weather takes a turn towards cold I would like to remind families that hoodies are not part of our

school uniform and should not be worn to school. Any student wearing a hoodie will be asked to remove it

and an alternative top will be offered to them. It is best all round to avoid this situation. Our lovely warm

school tops can be purchased from Lowes at Salamander Shopping Centre or as an alternative a plain navy

blue ‘sloppy joe’ style top can be purchased at KMART or Target. We appreciate families making sure our stu-

dents wear the correct uniform to school each day.

At the Leadership Team we are starting to review our current 3 year School Strategic Plan and with staff will

be thinking about our priorities for the next 3 years. There will be opportunities for you to make contributions

later in the year. Please look out for further information.

Students in Years 7 – 10 will have their Semester 1 reports given to them to bring home in week 10, the last

week of this term. The reports provide important information on how your child is progressing in school and

what they need to do next to achieve even more in Semester 2. Please take time to read through and discuss it

with your child.

At the start of this term Year 12 students received results for the midcourse examinations. There were some

excellent achievements and our students should be proud of their efforts. Students are strongly encouraged

to use their teachers’ feedback on their midcourse exams to assist them deepen their understanding and

ability to demonstrate their knowledge in future assessment tasks. As always, Year 12 need to be fully

engaged with all lessons and make effective use of study time at home. Students with major works will need

to work very hard this term to be prepared well in advance and as always will be well supported by their

teachers. It will be a pleasure to see the results of their efforts next term. With just one term before the Trial

Examinations, students should be making summaries of all topics and checking the depth of their

understanding by revising coursework using past HSC papers.

Year 12 have also had another busy term with lots of fundraising for the school. They have organised a very

successful cake stall, a Mother’s Day raffle and a BBQ. Year 12 are very appreciative of the support and will

use the funds to purchase a present for the school and to donate to a selected charity. It has been lovely to

watch the social committee work so well together and they look forward to delighting THS with another cake

stall later this term.

And of great importance is that the Year 12 students are looking resplendent in their new jerseys which

thankfully arrived on a very cold day at the start of winter. The jerseys look great and big thanks for Miss

Liddell for organising them.

And finally, the Year 12 Formal will be held on Wednesday 15th November at Wests Nelson Bay Diggers.

Many of our Year 12 girls have already purchased dresses and made hair appointments. It will all be here

before we know it. Good luck Year 12 as you head into the last few weeks of your schooling!!

Hi Everyone!

There have been a few changes this year in regards to the role of Year 10 Advisor and I would like to just let

you all know that I am officially reinstated into my role as the year advisor for this cohort of students. Due to

the fact that I am only working three days a week (part time maternity leave), Mr Scott McLennan has taken

on the Year 10 Advisor role on the two days I’m not here.

Year 10 Advisor Update

ATTENDANCE NEWS 2017 has seen the revival of vertical roll call to start the school day at 8.15am. Students’ roll call classes are

based on their house groups and are a combination of students from Year 7 to 12.

The benefits from having roll call begin each day include a settled start to the day, fewer students late to

school and more notes being received to explain a students’ absence. Notes should be handed to the roll call

teacher immediately upon return from absence. The note should clearly indicate the students name, date of

absence and reason for absence.

The accepted reasons for absence for the Department of Education are;

* Illness

* Family emergency

* Extreme weather

This year has seen improved student attend-

ance. This graph indicates the attendance

rates for each year group.

Good attendance at school plays a vital role in

a student’s success.

SPORT - CROSS COUNTRY THS had over 40 students compete at the Zone Cross Country Carnival. All the students performed

exceptionally, tackling the hills in Dungog. Tomaree was crowned Zone Champions. We had 10 out of 12

students being named as Age Champions and over 30 students selected to compete at the Hunter Regional

Carnival.

Following on from the Zone Carnival, was the Regional Cross Country Carnival in Cessnock. THS had over 30

students racing around the track across sand and high grass. All students ran well and we had 5 students

selected to race at the NSW CHS Carnival next term. Those students are: Alec Clark, Emalie Das, Cale Graham,

Ashlee Seale and Letia Shiner.

Congratulations to all those students involved.

Career s News le t te r

Term 2 provided students with an opportunity to discover their career path, students have been given an

opportunity to discover occupations through activities such as the Career Expo and university visits. Year

10 will be considering such information as they make subject selections for senior schooling, Year 12 are

nearing the end of secondary schooling and they will soon be forced to make decisions of whether to

head to tertiary education or to the workforce.

Year 10-subject selection has a number of events happening over the next few weeks and ultimately a

selection needs to be made in just over a month. A round table information session involving Head

Teachers and students will be taking place in week 9, where students will be given information of what

each HSC subject is like. The parent information evening and a subject fair is on Tuesday 20th of June.

These events will be both informative and also provide an opportunity for questioning and mentoring.

Squeezed in between these sessions there will be a Tomaree Careers information session where 23

industry representatives will be revealing how they achieved success in their employment fields and

giving an insight into what they actually do to earn money. Students need to contemplate wisely all the

information they receive during these events for they will be developing career paths and subsequent

subject selection in less than 6 weeks time.

Year 12 students who are opting to further their education at University will venture to Newcastle

University on Thursday 29th of June where they will be able to investigate possible courses to study, look

at options for leaving home or simply getting a feel of University lifestyle. This year students will be

bussed to the event, the cost will be $6 and notes are available from the careers office.

Things that happened during the term included the Careers Expo, Deadlies TAFE visit, Leadership

seminars and a number of students have already completed work experience placements. Hunter Valley

Careers Expo provided an opportunity for 90 of our students to explore the vast array of different

occupations available today. Students got to speak to Tertiary education providers and industry

representatives and whilst many may have talked of collecting the various lollies, rulers and pens that

filled their gift bags, hopefully they got a little insight into a possible career path. A group of Aboriginal

students were able to attend the Deadlies Try a trade day at TAFE actually got hands on making candle

holders, spray painting car bodies, welding, hair dressing and a couple of cultural activities to boot.

Students got into the spirit of the day and had a most enjoyable time. A lucky few students have already

been out to work experience, Aaron spent a week being a fire fighter in Sydney and if you too would like

to try your ultimate career then you need to start arranging the paperwork. Careers activities will continue

to happen throughout Term 3 and by being involved you may just find that perfect job.

A VALUABLE EXPERIENCE: AN EXCURSION TO THE ART GALLERY OF NSW Last Term, on the 29th of March, a group of fantastic Visual Arts students from Years 9-12 attended two

excellent exhibitions at the Art Gallery of

NSW in Sydney: The National: New

Australian Art and Artexpress. Our students

were lucky enough to be the first public

group to experience The National (the day

before its official opening!), an incredible

exhibition presenting the latest ideas and

forms in contemporary Australian art. The

works focus on a range of issues impacting

Australians in today’s society, such as

industrialisation and continuing struggles

with inequality, as well as addressing ideas

about Australia’s culture and history. The

exhibition proved an extremely educational

experience, with students having an opportunity to speak with a gallery educator and engage in valuable

conversation about several of the works on display. I couldn’t have been more proud and impressed by the

maturity and intelligence our students demonstrated in their discussion.

Students also viewed Artexpress, an exhibition showcasing band six HSC Visual Art Bodies of Work. The

artworks were of a high calibre and examined concepts extremely relatable to young adults. This was a

fantastic opportunity for senior students, particularly Year 11, to gain some inspiration for when they begin

their own major works in Term 4. We finished the day with a brisk walk from the Gallery to the Museum of

Sydney, where students had the chance to see the culturally significant installation, Edge of Trees, by Fiona

Foley and Janet Laurence; a work which had been extensively studied by Year 11 and 12 students. Overall,

the day was extremely enjoyable and highly educational, and I could not

speak highly enough of the students that attended.

ARTIST WORKSHOP FOR YEAR 11; A COLOURFUL SUCCESS Late last term, Year 11 Visual Arts students spent a day working with

the talented artist, Illeana Clarke, to create a miniature Body of Work

to complement the Unit of Work they had been studying in class,

focusing on Landscapes. Students created very sophisticated

artworks using their knowledge of colour theory and artmaking

conventions, allowing their practical skills to grow. Students utilised

a range of materials and techniques, extending their conceptual

understanding and material practice. Students worked studiously and were highly engaged for the entire

day, resulting in an extremely relaxed and

enjoyable experience. Thank you to Illeana for

an amazing workshop for our school and

11 for your

responsible and

Hands in Our Community: Year 9 put their hands up to paint a great artwork for our local Woolworths.

A group of talented Year 9 Visual Arts students put their heads together last term to create a painting for

Woolworth’s initiative: Hands in our Community. Woolworths asked local schools including Tomaree High

to create an artwork based on this concept and we came up with an artwork depicting Tomaree’s

Hospitality students serving up food to the community; an image that we believed portrayed Tomaree’s

continued dedication to giving back to our community. I would like to thank Benjamin Anderson, Bethany

Phillips, Jasper Gippel, Carly Cookson and Chloe Smith for their talented work and if anyone would like to

What’s new in Science? Scientific knowledge is always changing and our talented and dedicated Science staff

at Tomaree High are continually striving to keep up with the latest technological

advancements and seeking out new practical activities to challenge and engage all

students in Science and Agriculture. Across the faculty there have been many new

science experiments such as a different type of wave simulator using lollies and

barbeque skewers, an air compressor rocket and renewable energy kits.

In Agriculture, students have gained experience in tending calves, sheep and alpacas

and undertaken horticulture, hydroponics, aquaculture and tree propagation

ventures.

Many of our students in STEM, Biology and Chemistry will soon have the opportunity to have first-hand

experience using the latest in scientific technology thanks to a grant from RDA Hunter’s ME program.

The kit we received has been supplemented with our own purchases and will allow students to carry

out various experiments involving DNA testing, chromatography and use of fluorescent bacteria to

simulate forensic science and environmental bioremediation experiments.

Students in the Year 8 academic extension class recently had the chance to participate in the Build ME

a Future day at Newcastle University. Tomaree sent two teams to utilise their initiative and skills when

competing with other schools at a series of challenges related to science and engineering. Activities

included building towers, balloon cars and solving a forensic crime scene. Our students performed well

and enjoyed the day with one of the teams achieving third place overall. Well done!

In May, students in Year 12 Biology and Senior Science made the long day trip to Sydney for the annual

excursion to the Museum of Human Disease. They learned about human biology, diseases and “bionic”

body parts. This is such a valuable experience to further their knowledge of curriculum and assessment

to tasks. The trip also gives students a glimpse of what it would be like to attend a multicultural Sydney

University.

Half Yearly tests have now been conducted for Years 7 to 10 with the majority of students achieving

success equal to their ability. Some also sat for science competitions from which we eagerly await news

of their achievements. Upcoming activities for which arrangements are being made include a number

of workshops with visiting engineers, called “Floating Houses”, for selected students across Years 7, 8

and 9 and a Science and Engineering Challenge day for some Year 10. Stay tuned to future newsletters

for reports on these activities after they take place.

Year 10 Gold Coast Excursion

This is the final call for any Year 10 students still wanting to

join us on the Gold Coast excursion. The cut-off date for

bringing in your note and $100 deposit is Friday 30th June ,

(last day of Term 2).

The annual Year 10 Gold Coast Excursion will be taking place from

Sunday 3rd – Friday 8th December, 2017.

A payment plan was distributed to students on

Tomaree High School held its annual Biggest Morning Tea celebration on the 1st

June 2017. The day was well supported as always with many staff and volunteers

enjoying some of the homemade scones and espresso coffee made by our year 12 Hospitality students.

Congratulations Beth Freeborn, who was the Barista for the day. There were many compliments on Beth’s

silky, smooth milk creations and wonderful presentation. Well done Beth!

Thank you Deb Mould and her helpers who organise this event each year and to all of our students and

staff for helping to support the Cancer Council. The funds raised will go towards the prevention, early de-

tection and treatment of cancer.

T.H.S. P&C NEWS

A Meeting for All Parents It is unusual for us to ask all parents to attend a meeting of the school but the P&C Executive feel it is

essential we discuss with parents the School Funding Amendment Bill before the Australian Parliament at

the present time. NSW currently has a signed agreement for the delivery of the Gonski school funding

arrangements. There are many benefits to our children with the delivery of the ‘full’ Gonski. The Federal

government is currently proposing to step away from the existing agreement and avoid paying the final

two years according to the signed agreement. This will result in a significant reduction in the promised

funding to our school. Some summary points:

The School Funding Amendment Bill current before the Senate (already passed through the government-

controlled Lower House)

Will see only 40% of the funding of the original agreement honoured, bringing about a small increase

of $50 per child per year for the next ten years

Will cap Federal government funding of public schools to 20% of the school resource standard (SRS)

and private schools to 80% of the standard

Means that schooling for children will not be funded according to need

Abandons the increased role for the Federal government in the funding of disadvantaged students,

over 80% of whom attend public schools

Will abolish the requirement of the Federal government to increase, by 4.7% annually, funding to a

school until it reaches the school resource standard

Will lock in different funding roles for the Federal and State governments instead of developing an

integrated model as originally proposed by Gonski

Due to the scheduling of the matter in the Senate we need to act on this in the next three weeks. Please

attend a public meeting to hear more about these concerns and what you can do to help.

Alan Duncan Memorial Scholarship

Applications for the Alan Duncan Memorial Scholarship for Aboriginal men are now open and will close on June 30,

2017. This scholarship is designed to assist Aboriginal men undertaking a course of study at University or TAFE in

NSW.

Up to four (4) scholarships valued at $5,000.00 can be awarded to male students enrolled in a full-time university

degree in 2017 with a further ten (10) assistance awards of $1,000.00 open to students enrolled at university, TAFE or in

a bridging program

The Aboriginal Education Council (NSW) Inc requests that you distribute this information through your networks and to

inform any male Aboriginal students you may know who are enrolled in full-time tertiary courses.

Careers Expo is coming to THS – June 20, 2017 In an effort to assist Year 10 students in choosing their

career path Tomaree High School has partnered with the

Real Futures Foundation to present Careers Expo 2017.

Twenty businesses representing the different sectors of

the industries which offer employment opportunities in

the region will be present to answer questions and help

students determine the best opportunities to meet their skill sets.

The Businesses present will talk with students on pathways to careers in their industry as well as providing

them with valuable tips and hints in getting into this type of work or industry.

Representing the various industry sectors are, Port Stephens Council, Bunnings Warehouse, Westrac,

Salamander Child Care Centre, Amcal - Salamander Bay, Coolwater Constructions, Horizons Golf Resort,
