By ALBERT VILLEGAS [email protected] The City of Wharton re- ceived a $1.33 million grant from the Department of Home- land Security’s Federal Emer- gency Management Agency (FEMA) for the city’s Water Plant Generator Initiative. According to Congressman Michael Cloud’s District 27 of- fice, Wharton received exactly $1,338,841.50. In a July 17 news release, Cloud said the grant will fund the installation of generators at four locations: three water plants and one wastewater treatment plant. “This funding will go a long way in helping Wharton miti- gate damage from natural di- sasters, both past and future,” said Rep. Cloud. “Through any hardship, the people in our part of Texas have proven we can always rebuild and be bet- ter than before. I’m excited to see this funding for the city of Wharton.” The funding will help pro- vide generators to maintain the crucial water quality in the event of a power outage due to a natural disaster, pow- er surge, or other issues. This increases the overall benefit to the environment and pub- lic sanitation in Wharton. The grant stems from FEMA Hur- ricane Harvey relief. City Secretary Paula Fa- vors told the Journal-Spec- tator in a July 29 email the generators will be at various locations in the city. Three of the generators will be located at Alabama Road Water Plant (1015 North Alabama Road), Cloud Street Water Plant (214 North Cloud Street), and Valhalla Drive Water Plant (1819 Valhalla Drive). One wastewater gen- erator will be located at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (2227 Hwy 59 Feeder Road). Favors said this project will always keep positive pres- sure on the water system for crucial water quality to be maintained during a natural hazard, transformer blowing or a power surge. Favors said it is critical to treat this water for it to be discharged into the receiving stream as treated wastewater. The benefits to the envi- ronment will be decreasing chances of sewage backup and increasing public sanitation efforts. Wharton to utilize $1.33M in FEMA funds
