Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

REFLECTION ON THE GOSPEL

In this week’s Gospel we are presented with Mark’s view of

ministry, what it is and how it is to be carried out in clear

imitation of Jesus.

The ministry, is one of preaching and healing that is meant to

stir people towards conversions and repentance. The disciple’s

ministry is meant to be modelled exactly on that of Jesus.

Note the reference to anointing with oil. This was an element of

common therapeutic practice and underlies the tradition of

charismatic healing in the Church. Old rituals always had

blessings of oil for domestic, non-sacramental use.

Also note elsewhere Jesus’ use of spittle and clay in his own

healing ministry. In essence, all Christian ministry finds its

roots in this originating form that interlinks the teaching and the

healing of the people.

The teacher is called to heal, the healer to teach, and all to serve

the neighbour in dependence on God. The challenge in this

brief picture is large and very demanding of us all.

VOCATION VIEW – In today’s first reading, Amos says he did not choose to be a prophet. God selected him. Maybe God is asking you to reconsider what you are doing and do His work instead. Pray for vocations. To talk about your vocation, call the Vocations Office on 3324 3351

A sense of humour is a gift from God. Laughter unites us. A man and wife were having argument about who should make the pot of tea in the morning. The wife told him that he should do it because he gets up first. The husband said that she was in charge of the cooking in the house, making it her job. The wife said that even the bible says that the man should do it. The husband told her to show him and if it did he would make it. She fetched the bible and opened up the new testament, showing him at the top of several pages - “Hebrews”
