APPLICATIONSYou can’t find a more flexible gear drive. If

the distances between take-ups are variedduring operation, both shafts can be slid axiallythrough the Float-A-Shaft. They’re available inright or left hand drives to meet your exactrequirements. And what’s more, the floatingshafts have reversible drive to suit yourchanging operation.

Float-A-Shaft is easily installed too. Aningenious installation technique and one pieceassembly eliminates coupling and shaftalignment problems.

Tol-O-Matic’s Float-A-Shaft rightangle gear drive was invented over35 years ago, and the competitionstill hasn’t caught up. That’s becauseit’s the only model that “floats” onrotating shafts. No other design hasthe versatility, durability, safety, orthe ease of operation asFloat-A-Shaft.

Float-A-Shaft is a universal rightangle gear drive coupling. It consistsof two 45° helical gears that mesh at

right angles, designed to turn poweraround any corner. Float-A-Shaft canbe operated in either direction andcan slide axially along the drive ordriven shaft.

A lightweight aluminum housingencloses the gears, serving as astructural support and a lubricantreservoir. The gears mount directlyon the shafts through keyways in thegears and shafts. These rugged anddurable hardened helical gears have

been field-proven for over 35 years,assuring dependable operation. Yetwith all of that, Float-A-Shaft retainsa compact design well suited for usein tight quarters.

Float-A-Shaft’s unique floatingdesign maintains perfect alignment.It also eliminates dangerous chainsprocket drives and the additionaladjustments required for chain driveapplications.

SELECTIONDETERMINE INPUTTORQUE AND RPMREQUIRED

To select the Float-A-Shaft modelrequired for your application, youmust determine the input torque andRPM required for your application.The maximum RPM rating of theFloat-A-Shaft right angle gear driveis 500 RPM.

SELECT THE GEARRATIO REQUIRED FORYOUR APPLICATION.

When utilizing the ratioed units, thehighest RPM shaft speed on eitherthe input or the output shaft shouldnot exceed 500 RPM.

REFER TO THECATALOG PAGE FORTHE RATIO YOU HAVESELECTED.

Try the journal bearing, low torqueseries first. Find your input torque ininch pounds for the selectedFloat-A-Shaft unit on the graph andintersect it with the RPM of the inputshaft. If you find that the torque vsRPM intersects below the 300°Fcurve, you have selected the correctFloat-A-Shaft for your application.

If the intersection point was abovethe 300°F curve, you do not have aproper application. You must eitherreduce your input torque or RPM, orgo to the roller bearing, high torqueseries.

If your torque vs RPM intersectionpoint is still above the 300°F curveon the roller bearing chart, then youdo not have a proper application andyour only alternative is to reduceeither your input torque or RPM toget under the 300°F curve.

SELECT PROPER BORESIZE

Once you have selected a journalbearing or roller bearing unit, youshould then pick the bore size thatsuits your shaft requirements, in yourchoice of US Standard or Metric.(NOTE: Metric sizes available onlyin high torque roller bearing models)

DETERMINE YOUROUTPUT TORQUE

Multiply the input torque by the

percentage of power efficiency of thegearing times the gear ratio. See thefollowing example:

SHAFT DIAMETER

Tolerance of plus 0.000 in. to minus0.002 in. is recommended and shouldhave runout within 0.002 in. TIR.

SHAFT MATERIAL

Use only alloy steel or stainless-steelfor shafting, having a minimumhardness of RC40, or transmissionshafting grade like 4140 orequivalent.

SHAFT FINISH

In stationary applications the shaftfinish should be 64 RMS or better forroller bearing units and 32 RMSmaximum for journal bearing units.

Shaft finish for traversingapplications should be 32 RMS forroller bearing units and 16 RMS forjournal bearing units.

SHAFT STRAIGHTNESS

Shaft should be straight within0.0015 in. TIR. per foot.

KEYWAY

Keyway should be made up to 0.001oversize than the nominal. Seedimension table for nominal keywaysizes. Sharp edges of keyway shouldbe avoided.

SHAFT SUPPORT

The shafts should be supported

rigidly with either bearing blocksor pillow blocks to avoid excessivedeflection.

LUBRICATION

An extreme-pressure syntheticlubricant which exhibits excellentanti-wear and rust protectionqualities such as Anderol® 786 orequivalent is recommended.

INSTALLATION

An ingenious plastic dowel isinserted through the shaft boresduring manufacture and shippedin place. It allows you to install theFloat-A-Shaft on your shafts inless than a minute.

To install your Float-A-Shaft,simply line up the keyway onyour shaft with the shaft bore of thegear box. Push the shaft through intoplace! The plastic dowel falls out theother side and can be thrown away.

The Float-A-Shaft neednot be disassembled andreassembled duringinstallation, The dowel

holds the gears in perfect alignmentduring installation and protects theprecision internal parts from

contamination and damage duringshipping.

This fast and easy method ofinstallation can be used whenever

the keyways on your shafts extendout to the end of the shafts. For shaftswith shorter keyways, the Float-A-Shaft can be built around the shaft.
