CONTENTS

Dear Colleagues,

What a difference a year makes.I was introduced to Hexagon in April 2013

when I began working with the Corporate Communications team as a contractor. I came aboard to help with preparations for HxGN LIVE, and it was an amazing and eye-opening experience.

Accompanying the team to Las Vegas, NV, I got an up-close look at the event and made the leap into the world of design, measurement and visualisation technologies. I officially joined Hexagon as an employee a few weeks later and continued my education in the geospatial and industrial technologies that make Hexagon and its global network of brands leaders in the industry.

After 10 months as Manager of Marketing Communications, I wouldn’t say I’m an expert yet on all there is to know about Hexagon and its offerings, but every day brings a new discovery that increases my knowledge and makes learning about this industry a fun and challenging journey.

I’m excited to assume the role of editor of Together, and look forward to communicating with you through the voice of Hexagon’s employee network. Joining me as Associate Editor is Stephanie Johnson, Sr. Marketing Communications Specialist.

In this issue of Together, we take a look at Hexagon’s focus on the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS); our newest brands, Hexagon Solutions and Hexagon Geospatial; and what’s in store for this year’s HxGN LIVE conference.

The issue also helps us get to know Devex, a Brazil-based mining company and recent acquisition, and gives us a glimpse into the world of Olympic skeleton racing.

The Together team and I hope you enjoy this issue. As always, we strive to deliver content that’s compelling and thought-provoking, so feel free to e-mail us anytime at [email protected] and let us know where more great stories can be found. To quote acclaimed author Philip Pullman, “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.”

Happy reading.

EDITOR’S NOTES

TOGETHER > hexnet.hexagon.com 5

FROM THE CEODear Colleagues,

In this issue of Together, we focus on five countries whose rapid growth rates stand out among major economies in the world – countries that remain a key engine for sustainable growth in the future – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS).

We’ve come to know these countries for many things. China has been known as the “world factory”, Brazil an important “raw material base”, Russia a “petrol station”, India a well-known “world office”, and South Africa the “resource reser-voir” of Africa.

Today, the BRICS counties hold roughly one third of the world’s total population and represent more than a quarter of the world’s land area. As our presence in these areas increas-es, we are provided endless possibilities to shape positive change. That’s exciting.

I invite you to take a moment and recognise BRICS and the many opportunities that await.

Very best regards,

Ola RollenPresident and CEO

Brazil has long been known as the site for the joyous and colorful Carnaval. When thinking of Russia, perhaps the Winter Palace built by the great tsars comes to mind. India and China are known as homes to two of the seven wonders of the modern world, the Taj Mahal and Great Wall, respectively. And the beautiful and diverse geography of South Africa has made the country a popular tourist destination.

But to the investor, these nations are recognised for their growing power and international influence. Word of their clout is spreading – placing Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, commonly referred to as BRICS, in the driver’s seat for global growth.

BRIC. The term was coined nearly 12 years ago by Goldman Sachs asset manager Jim O’Neill in the economic report “Building Better Global Economic BRICs.” The report predicted that if the original four BRIC countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China – continued their rates of growth, they would become a much bigger part of the world economy within a decade, and were therefore deemed emerging markets. South Africa was added to the list in 2010 to form the current term BRICS.

What defines an emerging market? Emerging economies are expected to grow two to three times faster than developed nations like the United States, according to International Monetary Fund estimates. These nations are distinguished from other promising emerging markets by their demographic and economic potential to rank among the world’s largest and most influential economies in the 21st century. Together, BRICS comprise more than 2.8 billion people, or 40 per cent of the world’s population, cover more than a quarter of the world’s land area over three continents, and account for more than 25 per cent of global GDP.

For this reason, Hexagon leaders are hoping to increase their footprint in the BRICS markets. While the majority of Hexagon’s revenue comes from mature markets, the revenue from emerging markets is growing much faster.

“The BRICS markets are changing dynamically year on year, and we believe that process is expected to continue,” said Claudio Simão, president of Hexagon Solutions. “BRICS is a priority for Hexagon Solutions, and our goal is to provide technologies to meet these nations’ challenges.”

“To be successful in global business, you need a truly global organisation,” said Juergen Dold, president of Hexagon Geosystems. “We are not only present with local teams in all major mature markets, but also in every BRICS country. With this, we are becoming more local and much closer to our customers. In addition, each BRICS country has a seat amongst our management team so we can assess the needs of emerging markets every time we meet.”

With significant oil and gas reserves, increased foreign

investment and high interest rates, these nations are generally gaining in international influence and affluence.

“Because we are part of such a global company with customers all over the world, we are strategically focused on the direction and location of our key accounts rather than on a specific region or country,” said Norbert Hanke, president of Hexagon Metrology.

Despite their regional differences, the BRICS countries share many of the same challenges. Because it is one of the few companies that represent all the markets they serve globally, Hexagon is capable of addressing many issues through its standard offerings. Its global positioning allows Hexagon to operate in many locations, which helps the company access and understand local concerns.

Being a part of the Hexagon global brand network provides additional benefits. For example, the combined power of Hexagon companies helps in emerging markets by providing synergy opportunities that may not have been possible before. There are excellent opportunities to share expertise and resources, particularly when establishing subsidiaries in foreign countries.

“I see benefits for our employees and our customers, of course, but also for our company,” said Hanke. “Working together with many different cultures, our employees benefit from a variety of positive work ethics. An open mind set, cooperation, thinking out of the box and international socialisation are part of the benefit.”

The real competitive advantage, Hexagon leaders add, is the diversity that comes with globalisation. This allows more focus on local customers and strengthens Hexagon against competitors. With global positioning, Hexagon can follow customer projects in every part of the world, with the guarantee of the same quality everywhere, while also improving products, innovation, creativity and product management.

The emergence of the BRICS nations has challenged industry experts to think smarter, and understanding how these markets will affect the world is crucial. Offerings from Hexagon Geospatial, Hexagon Metrology, Hexagon Solutions, Intergraph and Leica Geosystems will create the intelligence needed to stay one step ahead of the global shift. <

Increased safety in offshore operations is an increasing point of awareness for governments around the globe. To this end, Russia is drafting a piece of legislation that will protect its seas against oil pollution.

The bill, while incomplete, would conceivably affect two oil-drilling rigs currently in operation off the Russian shore. Both rigs belong to Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft Limited, an organisation that has initiated geodynamic monitoring systems on a maritime, ice-resistant platform over the Yuri Korchagin oil deposit. It has done so to ensure safe operations and protect its workers from unexpected occurrences on the high seas.

Discovered in 2000, the Yuri Korchagin oil deposit is located 180 km from Astrakhan in the northern part of the Caspian Sea. The rig began operations in 2010.

Preliminary EvaluationTo decide upon a management firm, Lukoil launched a

competition for the project’s monitoring, and Perm State Technical University (PSTU) won the bid. With previous successes with deposit-extraction, PSTU’s Mining GIS and Surveying department considered quality equipment and software a crucial part of the project’s successful completion. The PSTU scientists chose Leica Geosystems GNSS equipment to monitor the oil rig’s vertical and horizontal displacements.

Using six carriers, the Caspian rig is permanently affixed to the seabed. During the extraction process, the deoiled rock is repacked

so the terrain settles. Platform monitoring is crucial in preventing irregularities within the process, which could cause the rig to lurch. Irregular seabed displacements may pose a threat to the oilfield infrastructure. Natural seismic activity in the region can aggravate the risk of man-made seismic events, which is further proof that geodynamic monitoring of facilities is essential.

The Right Monitoring ApproachPSTU scientists proposed a two-segment monitoring system:

an automated monitoring system using Leica GNSS Spider software and control monitoring performed upon control reference points onshore. Both segments involve sea and onshore works. The shore network uses a station installed on the roof of the Lukoil office, which is connected to a server running Leica GNSS Spider and checked by the chief surveyor. Raw measurements of the four sensors are saved on this computer station.

The sea segment of the monitoring system consists of three sets of GNSS equipment with antennas set on the edges of the rig’s main deck. Baseline solutions to the rig are computed from a single master site. Ten control sites also were created to control the stability of the master site. If the master is moved or lost for any reason, its role transfers to another site.

The combination of sea and onshore segments results in a collection of raw measurements of all GNSS sensors. This real-time data is collected and accessible to Lukoil’s chief surveyor via computer thanks to Leica GNSS Spider’s automatic data archival. The Leica Geosystems monitoring installation remains essential to keeping all relevant parties informed.<

Smart Agriculture from Hexagon Solutions is helping ethanol and sugar producers increase crop yield and optimise the performance of workers and machines through improved production logistics and plantation designs based on available land, topography and ideal planting time.

Brazil is the largest sugarcane producer in the world. Most of its farms are located in the state of São Paulo, where processing plants are producing sugar and ethanol.

Guaíra Sugar Mill is an award-winning mill and electric energy producer. Founded in 1981, Guaíra distillers started out producing 120,000 liters of ethanol a day. Today, 2,700 workers produce 480,000 liters and 1,000 tons of sugar per day to supply the Brazilian, European, African, Middle Eastern, Chinese and Russian markets.

Every part of the cane is used in processing. The wet waste of the distillery is returned to the field to be used as composite fertiliser, while the dry waste fuels an electric power generator. The generator makes the mill self-sufficient in electric energy, and its surplus is sold to the electric energy grid.

The ChallengeSugarcane is a perennial, whose mature multiple stems

can be harvested for five to six years with good productivity if managed correctly.

Without proper irrigation or precision agriculture, harvest productivity can be quite a challenge. A typical cane stalk is approximately three metres high and 70 per cent water, and must be kept viable by irrigation.

Maximising harvest potential also requires keeping harvesting machines from running over the plant lines and killing the cane stems. The use of an autopilot in the machines can reduce this loss, but without proper interpretation and handling of the line information, this benefit is limited.

The SolutionThe growing demand for ethanol in a highly competitive

market has created a perfect opportunity for the early adoption of precision agriculture.

Smart Agriculture from Hexagon Solutions not only optimises the utilisation of land and water, but also fertilisers, pesticides, seeds and other farming resources.

Utilising geo-processing software from Hexagon Geospatial and steering solutions from Leica Geosystems – two of Hexagon’s leading brands – Smart Agriculture keeps farmers abreast of crop management and production through digital workflows created from geo-enabled data. With the information that is collected and analysed, action can be taken to optimise processes and increase efficiencies, thereby improving crop yields and saving costs.

Using Hexagon Geospatial GeoMedia software, Smart Agriculture helped Guaíra Sugar Mill map land in a geo-referenced database with precise representation of field limits, water resources, roads and infrastructure for electricity and waste management. The topography of the land was optimised to create manageable farming areas.

Initially, planting lines should follow the topography of the terrain to guarantee a proper water supply for the sugarcane. Smart Agriculture helped the mill’s designer create multiple line alternatives and select the best set of lines to be sent to the autopilots.

Smart Agriculture can estimate the time and fuel needed for each field operation. It provides better precision and reliability for planting, harvesting and pulverisation. By integrating with the automatic pilot, Guaíra Sugar Mill was able to increase the number of lines for crop

rows, increasing the amount of sugarcane produced.“The process for automatically generating crop row lines has

improved dramatically,” said Alfredo Barbosa Neto, coordinator of geo-technology at Rosário Farm, a branch of Guaíra Sugar Mill. “What used to waste a lot of time for us on each project, now only takes only a few minutes, so the planting team has more time to analyse all the projects and check for accuracy.”

During the 2011/2012 harvest, Guaíra Sugar Mill achieved an average productivity of 82.4 tons/ha on a four-year-old plantation. This is 23 per cent higher than 68.29 tons/ha, the average Brazilian productivity in sugarcane for the same period. Much of this success was due to the pioneering use of precision agriculture with Hexagon Solutions’ Smart Agriculture solution.

“With Smart Agriculture, it’s now possible to have a geospatial view of the entire plot area before initialising the work, saving both time and fuel,” said Neto. “By using this new technology, we have already projected more than 2,000 hectares of planting area. Imagine the number of additional plants this software will generate for all the farms owned by Guaíra Sugar Mill.” <

SWEET RESULTS WITH THE SMART AGRICULTURE SOLUTIONGuaíra Sugar Mill sees increased productivity

The company faces special challenges that come along with serving a growing city. Like many cities, Kolkata has experienced exponential growth, expanding from 1.5 million residents around the turn of the century to more than 14 million residents as of 2010, and is among the most populous cities in the world today.

A study from the McKinsey Global Institute identified 23 global megacities, Kolkata included, that make up 14 per cent of the global gross domestic product and 5 per cent of the world’s population. With access to a densely packed workforce and close proximity to resources, these megacities have outstripped other urban areas. But a city’s infrastructure must keep pace with its population for it to continue to be an economic force.

Other megacities such as New York City keep getting taller. Kolkata, however, is growing both vertically and horizontally. These contrasting city profiles are a perfect example of how difficult it can be to continuously map the changing cityscape and provide necessary services. CESC has risen to the challenge. Because a key growth driver is customer access to reliable power, CESC has been a catalyst for urban development. CESC has streamlined operations with the help of Intergraph’s utility GIS and network management software.

Creating the Geospatial FoundationCESC has always been at the forefront of innovation, and knew

that GIS and geospatial solutions would help it meet the ever-increasing needs of the community. With a complex layout of the distribution network, CESC divides its territory into 10 districts,

taking a district-by-district approach toward implementing GIS and newer technologies.

The Hub of Network OperationsThe GIS at CESC is integrated with other IT systems and

is essentially used for network operations management. All outages and faults are mapped into the GIS by line managers, enabling them to plan and respond to whatever challenges arise.

CESC’s geospatial capabilities have helped the company deal with specific problems, such as weather-related emergencies and reducing electricity theft, by closely auditing energy usage. With the new system in place, the company cut power-loss levels nearly in half.

Powering the FutureNear real-time GIS has gone live in three districts out of

10 under CESC’s jurisdiction. The rest are expected to be live by the end of 2014. By mapping residential assets, the average response time has been reduced from four hours to less than one hour, greatly increasing CESC’s customer satisfaction index.

Looking forward, multiple applications are being developed to improve consumer services. As Kolkata is poised for growth, so, too, is its long-standing power provider. CESC is not only keeping pace with the city’s rapid urbanisation, it is also leading the race to a more prosperous future for the citizens of one of the world’s greatest megacities. <

CESC Ltd. began generating and distributing power in Kolkata (Calcutta) in 1899, and it is still keeping the lights on today. CESC serves 2.7 million customers within 567 square kilometres of the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah, and was the first distribution company in India to implement a GIS.

The finest rock artists in the land, the San painters of the Drakensberg mountains adorned more than 600 sites with 40,000 individual paintings.

>> FOCUS: BRICS

TOGETHER > hexnet.hexagon.com 15

The San people lived in the uKhahlamba Drakensberg range for 4,000 years, during which time they adorned more than 600 known sites with 40,000 individual paintings, the largest and most concentrated collection of rock art in sub-Saharan Africa. The paintings are outstanding in quality and their exquisite depictions contributed to the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park’s listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

The finest rock artists in the land, the San painters worked in exceptional detail with an extensive colour palette. For paint, they used a mixture of ochre, charcoal, manganese oxide and clay, bound with blood, fat or plant extract. The rock walls were sacred

places reserved for the masters to record meaningful statements about their cultural rituals. Unfortunately, much of the art is deteriorating, damaged by vandalism, fire, encroaching vegetation and natural weathering. As restoration is not possible, it is of the utmost importance to digitally preserve the art so the San legacy will not be lost.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal and the African Conservation Trust successfully completed a three-year project to create the first digitised archive of the San rock art. More than 500 rock shelters were documented and 80 new sites were discovered. Multiple 3D laser scans were taken all around the rock, creating a permanent, millimetre-accurate record of the paintings so future generations will still be able to appreciate them.

The process involved millions of 3D points displayed on the computer as a dense point cloud. The scans were stitched together to form a single point cloud of the entire site. Digital photographs taken from each scanner were used to colour the point cloud, transforming the yellow and orange raw scan data into a real-colour computer model.

A virtual tour, a 360-degree digital 3D video, 3D terrain modelling and GPS plotting complete the technology package for each site. A GIS web-based mapping system was also produced for the project. The extensive collection of data is housed at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum and shared with the province’s heritage agency, Amafa aKwaZuluNatali, and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, which manages the World Heritage Site. <

There is a spectacular mountain range linking South Africa and Lesotho known in some quarters as the Drakensberg (dragon mountain), and by Bantu speakers as uKhahlamba (the row of upward-pointing spears). But it is the San people who have left the greatest legacy in these mountains: a treasure trove of priceless art that Leica Geosystems’ cutting-edge HDS technology is helping to preserve.

THE ROUNDTABLE:

HxGN LIVE

HxGN LIVE will be here before you know it, and it promises to be a spectacular event that not only will educate, but entertain and inspire.

In this issue, Together asks five of our Presidents – Steven Cost, President, Intergraph SG&I; Juergen Dold, President, Hexagon Geosystems; Norbert Hanke, President, Hexagon Metrology; Gerhard Sallinger, President, Intergraph PP&M; and Mladen Stojic, President, Hexagon Geospatial – to give a brief overview on what attendees can expect from HxGN LIVE and how this amazing event is such a positive experience for all who attend.

>> Together: What are some of the highlights your

customers can look forward to at this year’s HxGN

LIVE conference?

Steven Cost: Each year, we strive to provide our customers with compelling information about our products and solutions – information that meets their real-world needs. At this year’s conference, two hot topics will be mobility and predictive analytics. By extending critical information to the field via laptops, tablets and smartphones, organisations can improve productivity, from public safety response to the delivery of utility services. On the analytics side, mining and analysing the volumes of data produced by enterprise systems can help improve operations. In some cases, that means using data – such as law enforcement incident reports or smart meter information – to address the next problem before it occurs, in a predictive and proactive manner.

The foundation for these new capabilities is a strong core operational system. At HxGN LIVE, we’ll unveil our new computer-aided dispatch system, I/CAD 9.3, which leverages next-generation communications, improves mobility and safety and reduces deployment time and costs for public safety agencies. Also this year, we’ve dedicated more focus to customer training and networking opportunities. Our attendees will have the opportunity to learn and engage more than ever before.

Juergen Dold: In the Geosystems track, we will be looking into new possibilities of connecting, merging and sharing data and expertise in real time. That means fusing multi-sourced content from the air, ground and underground, as well as underwater, to enable our customers (and their clients) to use the full potential

of smart solutions across all industries – whether in surveying or construction – to precisely position and guide machines or to improve safety in mines.

In our breakout sessions, structured into four sub-tracks, we will look into the entire process of accurate, fast and automated data collection and processing so we can create and visualise new realities more efficiently and provide experts professional 3D worlds.

Norbert Hanke: I agree with Steven about creating compelling content for attendees. This year, our conference track focuses on productivity and the user experience. We’ve focused all the presentation topics and workshop sessions around these topics with the goal of creating an engaging and interactive experience where everyone will be able to learn something new and have an opportunity to participate.

Some new things we’re doing this year include getting customer feedback in our software development process, which will result in future changes that people will recognise having been involved with at the conference. We’re also tightly focusing the presentations on real-world useful information that people will be able to take home and apply to their operations right away.

Gerhard Sallinger: PP&M customers coming to Las Vegas are interested in solutions that will give them a competitive advantage in today’s markets and the markets of tomorrow. This year, one of the main messages will be our focus on new offerings for owner operators, with SmartPlant Enterprise for Owner Operators (SPO) and SmartPlant Fusion. Business with O/Os is a fast-growing segment, and there is quite a lot of customer interest in our new and improved solutions. Another growth engine for us is the construction area, and SmartPlant Construction is really taking off. Intergraph customers recognise the benefits of our solutions and want to find out more, and HxGN LIVE is a tremendous opportunity to discover more about emerging trends and new solutions.

We also are excited about having GT STRUDL become part of HxGN LIVE. GT STRUDL, which Intergraph acquired in February, is one of the most widely used, fully integrated structural analysis solutions in the world, and we are looking forward to having their users join us this year.

Mladen Stojic: This year, HxGN LIVE is going to be very special for our customers. For the first time ever, there is an entire track dedicated to Geospatial technologies, featuring Hexagon Geospatial’s portfolio and unique customer implementations from around the world. The Geospatial track content aims to help attendees holistically understand change and use that information to make mission- and business-critical decisions. This track features Hexagon Geospatial’s portfolio of products, Intergraph SG&I’s geospatial solutions and other Hexagon brand applications.

Hexagon Geospatial provides the software products and platforms to support customers, channel partners and other Hexagon businesses. Recognising the importance of our mission as a geospatial software provider, Hexagon developed a brand (and the Geospatial conference track) to elevate the importance of this technology.

The Geospatial track includes a memorable keynote, track-specific special events and contests, an interactive tech expo

hall, more than 40 hours of hands-on training and 25+ session presentations. With classes geared to both the novice and expert user, our customers can participate in hands-on product training sessions taught by knowledgeable instructors.

>> Together: What do you think is the true value of

HxGN LIVE in terms of customer experience and/or

benefit to your business?

Cost: Intergraph SG&I customers are innovative. They continuously develop new ideas and best practices for using Intergraph solutions. We have utility companies using our software as part of their smart grid efforts. We have public safety organisations that have transformed the way communications centers and field personnel operate.

HxGN LIVE is the place to network with peers about these deployments and learn more about how our products and solutions address industry trends. Our goal is to facilitate this collaboration. We bring people together to discuss how Intergraph can contribute to their success. At HxGN LIVE, they have access to all our resources in one, convenient location.

This helps us, too. We value the input we receive from customers and attendees. They help us build better solutions moving forward. HxGN LIVE is a win-win for everyone.

Dold: This is very true. HxGN LIVE offers the perfect opportunity to discuss and create, to build upon and inspire. Great minds meet to face today’s challenges and discuss and learn about the geospatial future. Many of Hexagon brands’ synergies can be discovered in Las Vegas with the help of hands-on, interactive sessions.

Hanke: I’ll add to that by saying the conference is a great

opportunity for us to engage directly with our customers in a different context than a normal site visit or open house. First of all, it allows our customers to truly see the breadth of Hexagon’s offerings from all our divisions; that Hexagon is more than simply the product they use and interact with.

Second, it allows the opportunity for our customers to interact with peers from other companies and industries, which is something that’s normally difficult to facilitate because our industry doesn’t have a lot of educational conferences like this. So we see the conference as not only improving our ability to engage, teach and learn from our customers, but also filling an unmet need for cross-industry collaboration.

Sallinger: Intergraph PP&M is the market leader in our industries and HxGN LIVE lets customers see firsthand how the solutions we offer are innovative and unique. Our attendees are continually impressed with the business value this conference provides them. They are able to learn best practices and new ideas that they can apply in their daily workflow.

HxGN LIVE is also an excellent opportunity for us at Intergraph. We are able to meet face-to-face with customers from around the world and find out how we can better serve them.

Stojic: With Las Vegas being a city designed to stimulate all your senses, I firmly believe that HxGN LIVE will also appeal to our users on many levels. It really is a world-class event and the ideal venue for our customers to learn more about the power of Hexagon’s solutions and establish their own presence in ways that will ensure long-term business success.

As Hexagon Geospatial, we know that our customers are constantly striving to be as innovative as possible. The content of HxGN LIVE is geared to greatly expand their knowledge base, and we promise the experience will broaden their perspective. <

When the Hexagon Solutions team starts its day, team members power up with one goal in mind – results. Formed in 2013 and operational in January 2014, Hexagon Solutions is one of Hexagon’s newest brands and is responsible for the creation and global expansion of the Smart Solutions portfolio.

From sensors to visualisation and decision-making tools, Hexagon Solutions relies on Hexagon’s engineering and geospatial technologies to drive its solutions forward. This movement is in line with the multi-industry effort to leverage Hexagon’s global footprint in creating the next generation of value for customers through technologies that work exactly how users expect.

“The Smart Solutions are the backbone of our business and what sets us apart as a design, measurement and visualisation technologies provider,” said Claudio Simão, president of Hexagon Solutions and Hexagon in South America. “An organisation needs products and solutions that revolve around specific experiences.”

With a strategy driven by change, Hexagon Solutions’ message has three tenets: be enterprising, creative and unique. The new group sets no boundaries within its markets, seeking to create value and integrate systems by enhancing visibility, mobility, automation and flexibility.

Hexagon Solutions aims to transform how critical industries tackle challenges by providing decision makers the tools and intelligence to make strategic choices. The result for the customer

should always be project completion that is smarter and faster, with less effort and less waste.

By leveraging Hexagon’s entire technology portfolio to form combinations of geospatial and industrial technologies, the Smart Solutions platform gives value to the customer that goes well beyond what each stand-alone product offers.

The portfolio consists of the Smart Agriculture, Smart H2O and Smart Modular Assembly solutions, but new solutions will soon be

added – Smart Cargo, Smart Mining and two solutions currently in development in China.

“Hexagon Solutions concepts are a result of unique, creative and dynamic behaviour driven by market opportunities,” said Simão, highlighting the enterprise value that Hexagon Solutions provides.

Hexagon Geospatial President Mladen Stojic introduces the business and explores the philosophies the organisation will follow as it leads the industry into a new era of innovation. As a new entity, Hexagon Geospatial provides the software products and platforms to direct customers, channel partners and Hexagon businesses including the underlying geospatial technology to drive Intergraph Security, Government & Infrastructure (SG&I) industry solutions.

What specific need drove the creation of

Hexagon Geospatial?Mladen Stojic: As Hexagon Geospatial, our products will be the core geospatial technology stack within Intergraph’s vertical market solutions, while also serving as the geospatial software platform across our global partner network and other Hexagon brands.

As things change on the Earth, we do our best to capture that change, record it, analyse it, process it and, ultimately, deliver it to people who need to act and make decisions. That takes a lot of time and, unfortunately, time is critical and we can’t afford not to deliver mission-critical systems that rely on the timely availability of information to act and make decisions.

When a landslide occurs across a coastal area, typically the first thing that happens is people call police, fire or ambulance services for help. The people that are sent into the field need information, and they need it quickly. They typically tap into

the pool of content and information they have, but they also sometimes need information about what happened.

You need that data quickly, to process it quickly, and manage it quickly so other people can share it, get it and deliver it, not just as data but as information. You can’t afford to wait four to five days for that life cycle to be executed. That’s got to happen within an hour, within minutes.

So by leveraging cloud processing, by leveraging data and analytics while connecting users in the field through mobile devices, we’re doing everything we can to shorten the time it takes to collect data and get information to the people who need it.

How does Hexagon Geospatial fit into the

global picture?MS: Globally, a wide variety of organisations rely on our

products daily including local, state and national mapping agencies, transportation departments, engineering and utility companies and businesses serving agriculture and natural resource needs. The recent launch of our 2014 portfolio synchronises all our technologies across our desktop, server and mobile product lines. With creative and intuitive interfaces, smarter workflows and automated technologies, Geospatial 2014 enables you to transform multi-source content into dynamic and actionable information.

What is your vision and goal for

Hexagon Geospatial?MS: To help organisations geospatially process, see and

act upon information about our changing world for smarter decision making. Our portfolio helps organisations holistically understand change and use this information for mission- and business-critical decisions. <

Pathway to the Future:

Hexagon Capability

Center India

Historically successful as the Intergraph Capability Center, Hexagon recently renamed the center with a refreshed vision and new title, Hexagon Capability Center India (HCCI). Located in Hyderabad, the center is under the direction of Navaneet Mishra as it enters a new era working not only with Intergraph, but Hexagon’s global network of brands.

What began as a small group working on a handful of software products has grown to a 1,000-strong employee workforce managing many products spanning the realms of hardware, middleware and software. The focus of the center shifted from primarily software development to a world-class organisation representing a wide range of services including quality and assurance,

documentation, product management, system landscape maintenance, customer-specific implementations and support, as well as various regular software development.

“Describing this progress solely as a growth in numbers and scope would not do it justice,” said Mishra. “This journey also symbolises a growth in confidence – internal and external. Stakeholders from across the globe feel confident in HCCI’s capabilities to deliver tasks and responsibilities, and we have delivered on those heightened expectations.”

Looking ahead, HCCI intends to increase its recruitment and retention of top tech talent as it seeks to remain current and relevant.

Hexagon Opens IMS Center in

St. PetersburgHexagon Metrology recently announced

the opening of the IMS Center in St. Petersburg, Russia. The IMS Center is the master distributor partner of Hexagon Metrology for portable business in the territory of the Russian Federation. It will concentrate its activities on Hexagon Metrology’s portable products such as absolute arms, laser trackers and white light systems. This partnership strengthens the Hexagon Metrology distribution strategy, which seeks to obtain a direct selling presence in all its key markets, with increasing emphasis on the Russian market.

Bringing the Power of Hexagon

Geospatial to ASPRSAt this year’s American Society for

Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), conference held in Louisville, KY, in March, Hexagon Geospatial showcased its key mobility solutions to demonstrate to users how they can access the geospatial power that lies untapped in their pockets.

The reality is that geospatial data no longer begins and ends at the desktop. Whether it’s a soldier on patrol, a first responder at a disaster,

a construction worker determining where to dig, or a concerned citizen trying to report a street light that no longer works, end users are increasingly using mobile devices that provide data and tools for enabling effective remote work. More important, it helps them make the right decisions, at the right time using the mobile devices that they always carry with them.

With the right mobile solutions, it is possible to extend the value of geospatial solutions in the field, while also allowing local governments to effectively embrace the value of crowd-sourced data. Hexagon Geospatial’s mobile offerings allow any organisation to be more effective and efficient in their decision-making processes.

Hexagon Sponsors India

Geospatial ForumIn February, Hexagon launched its

restructured brand at India Geospatial Forum, prominently displaying a united front for conference attendees.

With the audience in mind, the booth presentation spotlighted the four industries Hexagon serves — natural resources management, land and cadastral mapping, utilities, infrastructure and construction. Hexagon Geospatial’s product launches were star attractions and tough competition for other products throughout the show. Leica Geosystems launched its Leica Nova MS50, the world’s first multi-station that combines every significant measuring technology in one device – this instrument will further help customers in India to integrate laser scanning with survey data to collect more accurate and useable geospatial information for their applications. Aibotix showcased the Aibotix X6 Hexacopter by flying it above the booths.

All-in-all, it was a great experience to integrate all brands and stand united.<

DEVEX ENHANCES HEXAGON’S MINING PROFICIENCY

Devex, a leader in the field of automation solutions for mining operation, is one of the newest brands to join Hexagon. Acquired in late 2013, Devex is a Brazil-based company with prominent mine management systems designed for underground and open-pit mines. Its solutions take fleet management to the next level of mine process automation with a comprehensive automation platform, real-time monitoring system and 3D visualisation.

Devex has captured more than 80 per cent of the Brazilian market with products that show a seamless merging of hardware and software, proving the company understands the challenges of the mining industry. In addition to its original flagship solution, SmartMine, Devex’s portfolio includes four marquee products. These solutions – SmartMine|UG, eControl, SafetYou and Extreme – work to optimise mine performance through real-time control and remote monitoring of mine activities.

For Devex, becoming a Hexagon brand means a strengthened platform of providing processes that are capable of simultaneously controlling customers’ surveying, planning, operation and safety dashboards.

“Our horizons have broadened and our teams are even more innovative and market-oriented,” said Guilherme Bastos Alvarenga, Devex CEO. “Our portfolio complements other Hexagon offerings that design technologies for mapping, research, lasers and drones. And I am convinced that Hexagon has what it takes to leverage Devex as the number-one integrated pit-to-port solution provider on the market.”

With its considerable growth in neighbouring countries, Hexagon is equally excited about its expansion into South America and the mining industry as a whole.

“Hexagon’s customers in mining and other sectors are increasing the utilisation of automation technologies to deliver higher efficiencies at lower costs,” said Hexagon President and CEO Ola Rollén. “Devex’s strong presence and technology leadership not only open doors to cross-sell complementary Hexagon offerings to the same market, but also leverage product integration opportunities to better serve the automation needs of additional segments like agriculture and construction.”

Devex has defined strategic measures for 2014 that are aimed at facilitating the exchange, integration and promotion of technologies with other Hexagon brands. That objective includes introducing precision systems for Devex‘s current clients, as well as taking SmartMine|UG to the Leica Geosystems market.

According to Bastos, Hexagon solutions include DNA that Devex has carried since its inception. However, Devex is now equipped with the fuel to conquer even more advanced products in 2014 and beyond. Innovation, efficiency and usability are the qualities that will continue to drive Devex’s products and services; yet the new competitive edge reinforces its internal strategies.

“Hexagon has transformed, in a positive way, Devex’s global perspectives,” said Bastos. “We now have a tangible reality with regard to the market. This leverages our portfolio and truly creates value for the customer.

“We are ready to foster synergies so that Hexagon can gain even more ground in the mining market worldwide.”<

When employees at Hexagon Metrology UK presented the ROMER Absolute Arm at last year’s Advanced Manufacturing Park in Sheffield, they never imagined the arm would pave the company’s way to the Olympic Games. Sitting in the audience that day was a man who would launch the ROMER Arm on its Olympic journey.

That man was none other than Great Britain’s Kristan Bromley, world champion bobsleigh skeleton racer, who was slated to compete in the event at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. When Bromley learned about the ROMER Absolute Arm, he knew it was the missing piece in his quest to advance to the next level of competition.

Bromley connected his team, Bromley Technologies, with Anthony Vianna, a portable arms specialist at Hexagon Metrology who served as team lead on the project.

“One of my roles within Hexagon Metrology is to manage customers who have measurement applications that are ‘out of

the ordinary,’ so I was delighted to help,” said Vianna. “A lot of our portable arm business comes from the automotive and aerospace industries, so it’s always really refreshing to work on a completely different application.”

Skeleton racing is a high-speed winter sliding sport, with racers reaching up to 145 km/h. The athlete rides a small sled, lying face down and head first. The sled has no active steering, so athletes use shifts in their body weight and subtle body movements to steer left or right. Any sliding, skidding or energy loss results in the loss of precious tenths of seconds.

Skeleton racers need to feel the sled is an extension of their body, but achieving that close relationship can be difficult because access to world-class skeleton tracks is limited. Great importance is placed on analysis and simulation, so this is where the ROMER Absolute Arm came into play.

“In many ways, working with Kristan was so very easy because his goal was clear and simple – to go faster on his sled,” said Vianna. “However, this application was as difficult as anything I’ve ever worked on because the tolerances involved in building a sled are so tight.”

Another major factor of consideration was Bromley’s added weight to the sled. This meant Vianna was not only looking at the sled’s physical characteristics, but also Bromley’s body position and movement as he lay on it. With an incredible eye for detail, Bromley was seeking precise performance gains in terms of weight, aerodynamics and polar moment of inertia.

Using the tactile measurement and non-contact laser scanning of the ROMER Absolute Arm, Bromley gathered rich 3D data, enabling him to make more effective designs and, ultimately, a faster sled. The arm’s touch allowed Vianna and team to build the sled to a higher accuracy than usual, and the arm’s high-speed laser scanner allowed the team to digitise Bromley’s body shape so the resulting 3D model could be analysed for aerodynamic performance in his CFD (computational flow dynamics) package.

Typically, laser scanners have problems when measuring shiny black or highly reflective surfaces – a nightmare when you consider that an Olympic sled is made from high-quality steel and carbon fibre, Vianna said. However, the ROMER Arm’s scanner has no problems on these kinds of surfaces, so Bromley was able to measure all components on the sled, not just the ones best-suited to a more traditional measurement arm.

Vianna couldn’t have felt better about Hexagon Metrology’s contribution to Bromley’s Olympic dream.

“It’s a great testament to the technology we have inside our company,” he said. “If you’d have asked the guys at our ROMER factories what their products could be used for, I don’t think Olympic skeleton racing would have been on their lists. So it really shows how truly flexible this product is!”

The project has raised Hexagon Metrology’s visibility, as well as expanded the possibilities of the ROMER Absolute Arm. Thanks to Vianna and the team’s work on Bromley’s sled, Hexagon Metrology is already looking at how to apply its technologies to other sports. <

1. My team is spread across the globe with people from different cultures, speaking different languages and working daily in practically every time zone. Yet we share a common goal and possess the vigour to work together as one. This “can do” spirit keeps us constantly focused on driving for results through collaboration, leadership and engagement. Information sharing and ideas exchange is an integral part of our team culture, which adds depth to our expertise. Always on the leading edge of technology, our daily e-mail interactions, formal and informal LYNC chats or calls, monthly conference calls, annual meetings and data sharing on the cloud help intensify our ability to excel in our work. Not to mention the power of social media … we have a very open work culture that encourages us to stay connected.

2. Today, the world has changed and so have we, with innovative smart devices becoming more prevalent in our daily work environment. It is almost impossible to imagine my life without a smart device. My smart phone and laptop have made me much more productive, allowing me to stay connected with my team at all times. In particular, when I am out of office or on business trips, I have the flexibility to switch lives between my work and home. <

“Information sharing and ideas exchange is an integral part of our team culture, which adds depth to our expertise.”

1. I don’t know where we would be without the internet. Thanks to e-mail, online storage systems, online calendars and online web applications such as SalesForce and Eloqua, our team is able to collaborate on projects no matter where in the world they are based. For example, I’ll set up an e-mail in Eloqua and then pass it on to Emiko in Japan, who will translate it and schedule it to go out to her contacts, all within Eloqua. It makes for a really fluid, efficient process. The speed with which we can communicate and collaborate on a project really gives us an edge when it comes to keeping on top of projects and ensuring a fast turnaround.

2. I guess being of the “younger” generation (I’m 27), I haven’t really seen the smart device revolution the same way other people might have. Coming into the workplace, I already had a smart phone and laptop and was accustomed to being on them pretty much 24/7. Smart phones have increased everyone’s productivity, enabling us to quickly and easily answer e-mails and monitor projects when out of the office. This is especially evident when working on a global project, since it means that often instead of having to wait a full day for a response to a small question, you’ll get a quick “after-hours” reply from someone based in the U.S. or Europe. It really does help us to all feel connected and takes away those geographical barriers. <

1. The Hexagon Marketing Shared Services team is all about global collaboration – both within the team and with vendors spread across the globe. We rely heavily on the usual collaboration tools like video/audio conferencing, Skype and Box to meet our day-to-day needs. However, the tools are only effective when backed by strong processes, rigorous implementation and, most importantly, a feedback mechanism. We take the time to analyse and learn from each project. These 3Ps form the foundation of all our processes:

PROGRAM – Collaboration as a coherent program, not a series of stand-alone effortsPROCESSES – Learning-driven approach to designing collaborative processesPLATFORMS – A set of tools and standards for sharing data, allowing global teams to work together seamlessly

And finally, as a manager, I believe in the simple philosophy – learn to get out of the way and focus on removing obstacles instead of creating them.

2. There is absolutely no doubt that smartphones have become a vital aspect of the way the Shared Services Team operates 24/7 today. More than productivity, computer-in-a-pocket is very much the norm for any services organisation to ensure that we are able to react quickly when business interruption occurs. For example, whenever a web site that we manage goes down, right from getting e-mail/SMS alerts on the smartphone, we can start troubleshooting without powering up the laptop. My current favorite app is MobileDay, which allows me to make one-touch conference calls while on the go. I frankly do not know how I survived without it for so long. <

1. In addition to e-mailing and social media, I rely particularly on video and web conferencing to communicate with colleagues at various locations. I prefer video conferencing (Polycom) for face-to-face communication, but if content sharing is the main focus, then I prefer to use web conferencing (WebEx). By using standardised technology, I can reach my colleagues quickly and communicate with them easily. I personally use video conferences intensely, especially when I am working with colleagues in Hyderabad for my regular meetings. I appreciate the flexibility and straightforwardness, as well as the personal [touch] of communicating face-to-face – it simplifies things quite a lot. In addition, it reduces travel and saves on expenses.

2. Using smart devices has significant advantages for me (always on and always connected). We mainly use them for e-mailing, for permanently monitoring our IT infrastructures and when necessary, for quick access to our systems. Our global business systems and the core IT infrastructure services are monitored 24/7 and all critical alerts are forwarded to the appropriate persons in real time. These days, we are no longer bound to the availability of a computer to guarantee a highly available system and application landscape – this means a great deal of increased freedom for us. <

Read tips on managing your morning routine from Together columnist Sarah Fordyce.

The Average Adult Gets 25,000 Mornings If fortunate, you get to wake up 25,000 times and each day,

decide what you will do next. Admittedly, I have let a lot of mornings slip by without much consideration. However, I have found that it is very true that what’s done in the morning really sets the tone for the remainder of your day. So recently I began to think about how to maximise and improve how I approach my mornings in order to ensure a great start to the day! I still have a lot to learn, but here are a few strategies you can use to get the most out of your 25,000 mornings.

What would you like MADE EASY?E-mail [email protected] with your suggestions!

Sarah FordyceExecutive Director, Global Brand Communication and Events, Hexagon Global Strategic Marketing

Prepare:

QUICK TIP: Prepare for your morning the evening before.

I eliminate as many early a.m. steps as possible by preparing for my morning the evening before. I review my schedule for the next day, take a quick look at the weather report so I am prepared to dress accordingly, and gather together anything I may need in one place so I don’t forget anything. I also ask myself, “What do I want to achieve tomorrow?” By setting a positive goal and outlook on the day ahead, I believe you are better prepared to get up and achieve!

Sleep:

QUICK TIP: Get a good night’s sleep!.We’ve all felt the long-term effects of sleep deprivation

and how it can leave you physically and emotionally drained. Sleep is so important as restful sleep has been found to help your body re-energise itself. One of the ways I try to ensure a good night’s sleep is to establish and stick to a routine. When possible, I go to bed and get up at the same time every day (even on the weekends). This will not only train your brain to shut down at said bed time, but also works to ensure that you are up and at ‘em in the morning!

Rise Early:

QUICK TIP: Get up early to set a calm tone for your day.

Giving yourself some extra time to prepare in the morning takes the pressure off of you. I set a timer on my phone to alert me to leave my house 15 minutes earlier than I need to. This builds a “cushion” within my schedule and also prevents the frustration that can be caused by an unforeseen traffic jam along my route. There’s nothing that guarantees a pessimistic attitude more than being late to a Monday morning meeting due to traffic.

Pre-Game:

QUICK TIP: Develop a “pre–game routine” to start your day.

My morning routine starts by reading a short motivating devotional and drinking a cold glass of water. Some people kick-start their day with 10 minutes of meditation or stretching. Similarly, you can establish a routine that kicks off your morning. This tiny routine sends a signal to your brain that it’s time to get into work mode, or exercise mode, or whatever mode you need to enter to accomplish your task. Additionally, a pre–game routine helps you overcome a lack of motivation and get things done even when you don’t feel like it. <

Markus Hammerer Program Director, Leica Geosystems

Wow! This gorgeous landscape of the Rhine Valley is the view from Markus’ home in Fraxern, Austria.

Sarah Fordyce Executive Director, Global Brand

Communication and Events, Hexagon

In January, all traffic and travel in the city of Atlanta, GA, was brought to a 48-hour standstill in the grips of what the locals dubbed “Snowpocalypse.” Despite the chaos the snow and ice caused, there were some beautiful and serene moments, as this seen in this photo of Sarah’s deck and neighborhood.

Tonya Figureoa Manager, Strategic Events, Hexagon

Ever get the feeling you’re being watched? This colorful wall art was photographed through Tonya’s car window as she drove down Atlanta’s Edgewood Avenue.

José Ramon Castro CristobalOrder Management Specialist, Leica Geosystems

José captured this cheerful and uplifting image from his office in Heerbrugg, Switzerland.

Together will be back later this year, so in the meantime, if you plan to do some travelling, be sure to take plenty of photos. We’d love to see the places you’ve visited, whether for business or pleasure. Send your best pics to [email protected] and you could be featured in the next issue.
