Three standards related to nickel testing are now harmonised under REACH and a Communication 1 was published by the European Commission (EC) in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on 22 May 2012. THREE HARMONISED STANDARDS UNDER REACH: EN 1811:2011 - Reference test method for release of nickel from all post assemblies which are inserted into pierced parts of the human body and articles intended to come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin EN 12472:2005 + A1:2009 - Method for the simulation of wear and corrosion for the detection of nickel release from coated items EN 16128:2011 - Reference test method for release of nickel from those parts of spectacle frames and sunglasses intended to come into close and prolonged contact with the skin The standard EN 1811:2011 was published by the CEN in September 2011 and the superseded standard EN 1811:1998 + A1:2008 will be withdrawn by 31 March 2013. In principle, EN 1811:1998 + A1:2008 can be used to demonstrate the conformity until that date. However, it is recommended to use the new testing method. However, spectacle frames and sunglasses are now covered by EN 16128:2011. Technically, EN 16128:2011 is the same as the previous standard EN 1811:1998 +A1:2008. REACH Harmonised Standards for Nickel are now available

Nickel is restricted under REACH Annex XVII for any articles which are prolonged and direct contact with the skin. Testing standards published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) can demonstrate the

conformity. Three standards related to nickel testing are now harmonised under REACH and a Communication1 was published by the European Commission (EC) in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on 22 May 2012.

The standard EN 1811:2011 was published by the CEN in September 2011 and the superseded standard EN 1811:1998 + A1:2008 will be withdrawn by 31 March 2013. In principle, EN 1811:1998 + A1:2008 can be used to demonstrate the conformity until that date. However, it is recommended to use the new testing method.

Importers and EU producers of articles are reminded that the deadline for REACH Notification for the last 20 Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) added to the Candidate List1 in December last year is 19 June 20122.

The standard EN ISO 3758:2012 Textiles - Care Labelling Code using symbols has been published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) recently. This standard is widely adopted as a voluntary requirement in many European countries such as Germany and Spain. Care labels are important to consumers because they can help avoid possible damages caused by improper cleaning treatments. The major changes of the standard are now summarized in the following Table A.

�� The total amount of the SVHC present in all articles, with each article containing > 0.1% (w/w) of the SVHC, exceeds 1 tonne per year.
