Best City to Move to in AmericaDetroit, like Pittsburgh, has made a major shift from an industrial town --- in Detroit’s case, auto industry --- into the 21st century as a hub for education, health and the arts. Yet, living in this city is quite affordable to our great surprise. The cost of living is 11.6 per cent below the national average and the average home price is well below $120,000. Moreover, this city is renowned for its low risk for a natural disaster such as an earthquake, hurricane or tornado. It is also repeatedly ranked as one of the best sports cities, with the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball Team and the Detroit Red Wings National Hockey League Team and other major professional sports teams. You would be hard-pressed to find a city with more loyal sports fans. Let it be put down modestly that this fact should not be underestimated because after all it comes to quality of life when it comes to sports lovers.

Hungry for Answers

The statistics are abominable. Nearly one out of three children in the Third World and other developing countries suffer from malnutrition or being in the state of undernourishment. Worldwide, poor nutrition linked to more than half of all child deaths.

Now a worldwide effort --- the largest ever --- is in progress to fight this health crisis, led by scientists in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. A $40 million grant from the Tom and Sophia Miller Foundation will fund a six-year study to investigate how malnutrition and intestinal infections result in serious lifelong physical and cognitive problems.

“Undernourishment is a devastating state which can ruin the human body,” says Richard Gilmore, director of the University of Pittsburgh for Global Health and the study’s head researcher. “It can be harmful to adults, indeed, but it is malnourished children who face lifelong problems, as most likely they do not reach their full physical and mental potential.”

Researchers do not sufficiently understand the causes of malnutrition or the complex relationship between malnutrition and intestinal infection. This is not merely a problem of access to food; many children who have enough to eat are in the state of undernourishment to our bewilderment. A focal point of the project --- the study of genetic differences in the researched population--- will shed light on what factors account for susceptibility to infectious

organisms and malnutrition.

Questions 166-169 refer to the following article. 166. What does poor nutrition result in? (A) Child deaths in developing countries (B) Malnutrition in developed countries (C) Many infant deaths right after birth(D) Food shortage and water pollution

problems

167. What do children under malnutrition suffer most?

(A) They will fall short of their possible strength mentally and physically.

(B) They won’t achieve their lifetime goals such as becoming heroes or heroines.

(C) They will not understand the causes of malnutrition for good.

(D) They will fail to receive necessary education to contribute to society.

168.Which is NOT true for undernourishment?

(A) It can destroy the human body.(B) It can be a problem affects your whole

life.(C) Adults are immune from it.(D) It is not caused only by bad access to

food.

169. What will this research focus on? (A) Why children with little access to food

experience malnutrition. (B) Why children with enough food to eat

avoid malnutrition.(C) How malnutrition is associated with

bewilderment. (D) How malnutrition and related infections

are caused.

Dear Kate,

You told me you had a trouble with heating because the air conditioner in your apartment room was quite obsolete and couldn’t make your room warm enough. Last week, I bought a small portable heater of Thurston Tech and I’ve found it is very good.
