DURATION:   14 weeks (84 HRS.)  INVERSION (IVA INCLUIDA):   4.960 pesos  BOOK:   “The Heinemann ELT TOEFL Preparation Course” BY Kathleen Mahnke and Carolyn B. Duffy, MacMillan Publisher  OBJECTIVES:  Preparation for the TOEFL requires an investment of time. In this course, you will learn how to manage your preparation time and you will be supplied with the essential tools and necessary skills to successfully answer the TOEFL exam (in a more assertive way). The course will help you increase your TOEFL scores by 30‐60 points.   COURSE CONTENT AND METHODOLOGY:  This course is divided in four sections – Listening, Structure, Reading and Writing.  This course begins with a diagnostic exam to determine where the students are and to make a list of their strengths and weaknesses. Based on the results each student can focus more on the trouble areas. Students will also follow a general program to review all the sections of the TOEFL. Second midterm TOEFL test is applied during week 7 to see the progress and assess areas of improvements. The final test is applied the last day of classes.

PROGRAM: 

STRUCTURE SECTION.  This section lasts 5 weeks (30 hrs) and concentrates on the grammar skills since grammar knowledge tends to be a weak critical area. In this section “The Heinemann ELT TOEFL Preparation Course” book will be complemented by other material to make the learning more active and all inclusive.  The skills to be covered are:

LISTENING SECTION.  This section is 4 weeks (24 hrs) long and focuses on the listening skills that are essential to pass the TOEFL exam. In this section “The Heinemann ELT TOEFL Preparation Course” book will be complemented by other material to make the learning more active and all inclusive. The skills to be covered are: 

1‐ Check key words and key word synonyms 2‐ Check idioms 3‐ Check words with many meanings 4‐ Check sound‐alikes 5‐ Check exclamations 6‐ Check questions intonation 7‐ Check negatives 8‐ Check time 9‐ Check conditions, wishes, causes and results 10‐ Check who does what 11‐ Check the situation 12‐ Check the topic 13‐ Check language functions 14‐ Check ahead to predict answers 

READING SECTION. This section of the book lasts 3 weeks (18 hrs). Students will first start by exploring their reading techniques to determine how much they know about reading, how fast they can read and how much they can understand. Depending on the results, the two main techniques – skimming and scanning – will be looked at so the students can learn to use them properly with the purpose of improving their speed and comprehension among other important skills.  In this section “The Heinemann ELT TOEFL Preparation Course” book will be complemented by other material to make the learning more active and all inclusive. 

The skills to be covered are: 

1‐ Reading activity article to apply the skimming and scanning techniques 2‐ Check vocabulary in context 3‐ Check the topic and the main ideas of the passage 4‐ Check purpose and organizational patters 5‐ Check reference words 6‐ Check detail and factual information 7‐ Check to make inferences 8‐ Check the attitude of the author and tone of the passage

WRITING SECTION: 2 weeks (12 hours) will be spent o the writing section. In this section students will learn how to write academic essays correctly. They will look and practice the processes involved in pre‐writing, writing, and post‐writing.   The skills covered in this section will be: 

1‐ Techniques for pre‐writing 2‐ Writing techniques.
