Old schOOl: When I started in the industry, I used a rotary dial phone and had to call and make every reservation — hotel, flight, rental car, tour arrangements. There were no faxes, and I had to hand-write every airline ticket. Now, of course, it is almost all done on the computer. And the electronic airline tickets are the best. Before, if you lost your ticket, you had to pay to have it replaced. I dOn’t leave hOme wIthOut my blue swim noodle. I enjoy water aerobics, and on ships, the shallowest part of the pool is usually five feet deep. I am barely 5-foot-3 and need the noodle to help me keep my head above water.

travel jOurnal tIPs: I carry a specific notebook. It is five-by-seven with a spiral binding, and a hard cover. It fits anywhere and I can stick my pen in the spiral so I always have it. • Don’t pressure yourself to write everyday which only makes it a chore. Do write down the date, time, and place of your entries. • Try to capture a particular scene instead of just a list of ‘and then we went to...’ Pick one thing that stands out and write very precise descriptions to capture that one moment. • Don’t write only about the great stuff. Travel is full of uncomfortable moments. Those are real. You want to capture your own experiences, not just something you could read about in a glossy travel brochure.

In 2010, I was the female faculty sponsor and working crew member aboard a two-masted schooner for a month-long sailing trip in the Caribbean. Everyone got experience doing every job on the ship. CFO, D.D. Williamson

Bringing Her ‘A’ Gameann JosePh What’s the one thing Ann Joseph has to do every day?

“I have to bring energy and my ‘A’ game to work,” says Ann, who is CFO at D.D. Williamson, a 145-year-old global manufacturing company headquartered in Louisville that makes caramel and other natural colorings for the food and beverage industry.

“I’ve got a team here that I lead, and I’ve got to give them my best every day,” Ann continues. “I’ve got to bring that creative energy, that positive attitude, [because] there are people looking to me for leadership and guidance. They’re going to set their tone, their aspirations, [and] their day based on how I’m feeling and

the energy that I am communicating.” Ann, who grew up in a small town on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border, learned her management skills in the Navy. A business major at Purdue University, she went through school on a Navy ROTC scholarship and eventually became a commander in the Navy, living in Guam, London, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.

“In the military, you learn how to take a huge number of details and pick out what’s relevant, what matters, and what you need to focus on,” Ann says.

Right out of college, she was given a division of 150 people to be responsible for. “You are thrown into the deep end of the pool, and you need to learn to swim pretty quickly,” she says.

Another benefit of being in the military was travel. While living in Guam, Ann learned to scuba dive and traveled to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Australia, and Thailand. But her favorite city to live in was London.

“It’s just fantastic, very multicultural, incredibly diverse,” Ann says of London. “From there, I got to travel all over Europe.”

After her time in the Navy, Ann, who holds an MBA, honed her finance skills at General Electric in Louisville. She took an assignment in Hendersonville, N.C., where she resorted briefly to a long-distance marriage with her UPS pilot husband, Link Joseph, until she decided to seek a job closer to her adoptive home.

“I went to the [D.D. Williamson] interview with an open mind,” Ann says. “If I hadn’t, I don’t think I would have considered a smaller, privately held company. It got me back to Louisville for personal reasons and was a great career decision.”

Here are Ann’s tips on embracing change:

12 January 2013

Rule #1: Step outside your comfort zone on a regular basis. Find the courage to tackle a new or intimidating challenge, whether it’s public speaking, leading a high-visibility project, or simply joining a new organization where you know no one. Over time, things that once seemed daunting no longer are.

Rule #2: Take

the tough assignments.

With my previous

employer, I accepted a job

transfer to a division that

was struggling financially

and was in a less-than-

desirable geographic

location. It was a great

chance to expand my

skill set and scope of

responsibility. I wouldn’t

be in this position today if

I hadn’t taken that tough

assignment.

Rule #3: Promote cross-pollination. Bring the best practices from your previous experiences to your current organization. You were brought in to provide out-of-the-box thinking and a fresh perspective. Not everyone embraces change, so build your case slowly. Celebrate the small wins along your journey. Be open to new ideas from other new hires, and diversify your team.

Rule #5: Keep an

open mind. Embrace

the opportunity to meet new

people and try new things. My

friends and colleagues thought

I was crazy to leave big-city life

on the East Coast to move to the

Midwest. I’m glad I didn’t listen!

Good times, great people, and

exciting opportunities can be

found anywhere.

Rule #4: Prioritize your life outside of work. Email, conference calls, and project work frequently intrude into your personal life. Some at-home work is necessary, but make sure you schedule, prioritize, and establish boundaries for sufficient personal time for the people and activities that recharge your batteries. My husband and I go “off the grid” on vacation. Unplugging for a week means working ahead before you leave and lots of catch-up when you return, but the time in-between is well worth it.

I enjoyed the debut novel, The Typewriter Girl, written by Kentucky native and high school teacher Alison Atlee (Trade Paperback Original; $15).

Set in turn-of-the-century England with a strong, ambitious heroine, The Typewriter Girl is described as what would happen if you dropped Mad Men’s Peggy Olsen in Downton Abbey.

Why you’ll love it: A busy schedule doesn’t have to keep you from volunteering with the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Their Pathways program provides flexibility for people who want to volunteer but don’t have much time to spare. Volunteers can use their skills

as a teaching tool. For instance, a chef could host a 6-week series about the mechanics of running a successful restaurant or a local television reporter could take high school students into a newsroom. What else you’ll find: Volunteer to lead a troop or support their fundraising efforts by attending their annual Desserts First event. All volunteers must take an orientation course which gives an overview of the mission of the organization. Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana also gives volunteers the opportunity to become better leaders through continuing education courses.

Why you’ll love it: Have you ever wished you could help a community that has been affected by a tornado or flood but didn’t know where to start? The American Red Cross will train you to become a disaster relief volunteer who can provide necessities and emotional support to those who’ve lost their home, belongings or loved ones. Volunteers have the option of working locally or being deployed to another state where a disaster has occurred. They receive free training in all areas related to disaster relief. What else you’ll find: The American Red Cross Service to Armed Forces Emergency Call Center looks for volunteers to relay vital messages to military members and their families — whether it’s concerning the death of a relative or birth of a child.

Surviving that makes it a Happier New Year and opens the way for Today’s Woman to celebrate its 21st year.

While many limited their 2013 planning due to the much-anticipated December 21 apocalypse, we had no doubt that we’d be arriving strong in the new year.

Today’s Woman, like a typical 21-year-old, is evolving beautifully. Her soul that touches all of her readers monthly is not changing, but she’s certainly sprucing up her appearance.

We’re redesigning the pages of the magazine for a more contemporary look. Our Smart Styles got a facelift as well. And we’ve added another option to promote available services to our readers called Here for You.

We’re introducing our Best for You Distinctions this year. In our quest to be THE resource for women in this area, we wanted to make businesses that provided services for women better known to everyone.

We are sharing some of them with you by recognizing these businesses, which help us all in vastly different ways.

This issue introduces you to our initial field of five businesses in the following categories boasting the Best Places To…

• Find Healthful Food• Find Healthful Prepared

Meals• Find Help with Hormones

• Exercise• Find Preventative

Programs• Improve Sight and

Hearing• Lose Weight• “Remove” Years• Stop Aches and Pains• Help You Help Others• Learn a New Skill

For the most part, we spotlightlocally owned businesses that strive to make women’s lives a little better. In September, we will release a new poll of businesses which you will vote on and these winners will be featured in next January’s issue.

You’ll also want to check out our new interactive website, todayswomannow.com. Not only can you continue to view the entire magazine online, but we’ve also incorporated daily news and views, with timely postings on topics of interest to you! You can win prizes and interact with our content here by leaving your own comments.

I don’t want to leave out our sister publication Today’s Family which has also been growing up as well. Its enhanced interactive website www.todaysfamilynow.com is celebrating a year of talking about the fun and frustrations of family life. There are also lots of prize packages that you won’t want to miss out on, as well as our Beautiful Baby contest going on now.

So celebrate 2013 with us as we all look for ways to enrich our lives and those around us.

A pancreas transplant completely changed her life

Susan Greenwell, 56, had struggled with Type 1 diabetes since 1994. Her husband and children found her unresponsive on multiple

occasions. She had become unable to control her blood sugar or recognize when her blood sugar was low. After her problem escalated, her endocrinologist referred her to the Trager Transplant Center at Jewish Hospital, and she underwent a pancreas transplant.

Susan knew the University of Minnesota was the world leader in pancreas transplantation, so she thought her transplant would be performed there. But after meeting with Dr. Michael Hughes at

the Trager Transplant Center, she changed her mind. Susan was glad to be able to have her family in St.

Matthews and friend support close by.

Since her surgery, Susan is no longer diabetic. She can eat what she wants and doesn’t have to check her blood sugar — or have a schedule of friends and family checking on

her throughout the day. Over the years, outcomes have dramatically improved for

pancreas transplants, and they are now nearly as good as kidney transplant outcomes. The average time on the waiting list for a pancreas transplant

is one year.

Never stop doing

little things for others. Sometimes those little

things occupy the biggest part of their heart.

— UnknownQ A& How do you control your weight?

“I have found the solution: my daily sweatfest workouts and eating primarily fruits and vegetables, raw or steamed. I am rarely hungry, have energy to keep up with my almost-4-year-old, and my morning weigh-ins keep me in line. I’ve also discovered this keeps my skin young, and my menopausal symptoms have all but vanished. I truly feel that sugar-laden, chemically processed items marketed as ‘food’ are the enemy.”

“Some years ago when I was working and enrolled in a doctoral program full time, I discovered I was at the top of my weight range. I took myself to Weight Watchers. It was the perfect solution. I feel as if it taught me how to eat, and I’ve followed its guidelines ever since. I lost 30 pounds, and I have kept it off for the last 30 years.”

Susan Greenwell waited a mere 18 hours for a pancreas transplant she says has provided her a freedom she hasn’t had in 20 years.

The past two years since starting my weight-loss journey, I have had a roller coaster ride of emotions and self-discovery. To date, I’ve lost over 200 pounds, and while

this should be a proud accomplishment, I’m highly disappointed as I look back at my life. I’m disappointed I allowed self-image issues to hold me back from so many things in life because of fear of embarrassment. I always felt like I was cheated at life because of my physical disadvantages, but now I see I cheated myself. Now, being lucky enough to have been given a second chance, I’m making sure that I take nothing for granted, and I’m learning there was no reason I should have been afraid two years ago.

Having had the chance to see the adult world from within two different physical shells, I see the differences with how people treat me based only on physical appearance. Two years ago, the idea of being the center of attention or having guys look at me seemed so appealing. Now, I’m proud to say that being the center of attention isn’t on my list of priorities. The people I do want to make time for are the people who have always been in my life to support me and love me.

I feel that I need to pass inspiration on to others to help them see the potential they have right now. Looking back, I wish I could have seen the good I had in me and not focus simply on outside appearance. I now know who I am on the inside

is the imprint I will leave in this world. I want to help others who are struggling with

self-image issues realize that as well. I will always encourage someone to better her life mentally, physically, and emotionally, but I want to make sure she understands that she has to be willing to be her own light. I have missed out on quite a bit, and if I can help even just one person see the promise her life can bring, I will feel that my past

mistakes weren’t for nothing.

Jessica Joyce proves you can do anything you want when you are serious about accomplishing it.

When we met her, Jessica had already exceeded her weight loss goal losing over 200 pounds in two years through Lap Band surgery. But Jessica believes changing her way of thinking had the biggest effect on her weight loss, because she focused on rebuilding herself internally. After going from 340 pounds to 142, Jessica ended her wedding engagement with her longtime boyfriend and started a bucket list of all the things she’d always wanted to do. She’s created a new life that is less centered around her physical appearance and more focused on the type of woman she wants to become. Below is the essay she wrote for Today’ s Woman.

A Moon Garden in Old LouisvilleTall vases of white flowers, interspersed with candles

lining the bar greet the customer at Buck’s Restaurant. Small votive candles are also found on every table, nestled in the windowsills, and dotting the top of the baby grand piano. A pianist plays and sings at Buck’s every evening.

Whether dining at a table in a cozy nook near the bar or somewhere in the main dining room, each table offers a romantic feel. The tables are beautifully set with white linens, mismatched china, and a small vase holding two Star of Bethlehem white flowers.

The Food Buck’s offers a wide variety of appetizers and entrees from

Asian Fusion to Southern inspired. Try the Crispy Fish with Hot Sweet Chili, a staple dish that has been on the menu for 20 years. Appetizer favorites? Scallops drizzled with a peanut sauce, as well as the Sweet Potato Steak Hash topped with a fried quail egg.

RR

It’s a stunning sight to see the entire restaurant — looking like a garden of white with small, warm glowing luminaries speckling the dining-scape. It is a moon garden. “When you plant a garden all in white, you can enjoy it both day and night,” said Hensel “Buck” Heath, founder of Bucks.

Buck’s dessert menu changes, however the Mocha Dacquois never goes away. It’s light in texture with a slight crunch, and a hint of rum and dark chocolate.

Romance is always in the air. Enjoy these cozy intimate upscale local dining experiences anytime or schedule now for next month’s well-known romantic holiday.

Italian Food for LoversEnter Volare Ristorante and be greeted by contemporary

Italian-inspired artwork, a floor-to-ceiling wine rack, a large mural of Venice, and tables draped in white linens, embellished with fresh flowers and candles.

It’s a perfect place for proposals and anniversary celebrations. (Find out which tables to reserve at TodaysWomanNow.com). Live music in the evenings can be heard Wednesday through Saturday in the bar area, but enjoyed throughout the entire restaurant.

The Food The menu is vast with a separate bar menu offering Italian

inspired small bites at reasonable prices. Check out the Arancini (fried risotto balls with a Gorgonzola cream) and the Shrimp and Grits.

New on the main menu is the Vitello, a veal chop stuffed with goat cheese and topped with onions, roasted red peppers, and drizzled with a reduction comprised of red wine, veal glace and porcini mushroom infused balsamic vinegar. This dish caters to all the gourmet senses served with potatoes, asparagus, cauliflower, and carrots.

The Vitello, a veal chop, caters to all your gourmet senses, but Chef Josh Moore has a passion for desserts, so it is worth it to save room. The Chocolate Lava Cake is a bittersweet molten lava cake served with vanilla bean gelato, fresh berries, and a crème anglaise sauce. Perfect for two. How romantic!

Romance Before the ShowWhat was once the Kentucky Theater has now been beautifully

converted into a restaurant. The Marketplace At Theater Square has a worldly, contemporary interior with both industrial and theatrical accents. The walls are painted in shades of red and green earth tones, the fixtures are both theatrical and artistic, and both indoor and outdoor water fountains make this place one romantic space to bring someone special.

A jazz trio performs on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday evenings in the main area of the restaurant.

The Food To start, try the Roasted Corn Risotto Fritters. These are fried rounds of

goodness. Often Chef Dallas McGarity makes his special Sesame Seared Kajiki, which is a Blue Marlin fillet topped with a spicy tomato and pancetta compote and served with roasted potatoes, gigande beans and kale, with a swirl of balsamic glaze. For the pasta lover, check out the Housemade Semolina Pasta, a great combination of Italian flavors beautifully presented in this freshly made pasta dish.

consider the Market place at theater square for dinner either before or after the show as it is conveniently located to the Brown, the palace, and the henry clay theaters.

Situated in the back of the restaurant is a room reminiscent of an outdoor, private garden. A skylight illuminates the center of the room, highlighting the indoor fireplace, which is surrounded by a fountain mote. Spouts of water arch from the top edge of the fireplace creating a relaxed and soothing atmosphere through both sight and sound.

I needed someone to arrange a grouping of family photos going up a staircase and Connie was referred to me by a friend.

After I told her what I wanted, Connie replied, “I can do that.” Music to my ears! As complicated as everyday life gets to be, when I heard those words, we became friends.

Our friendship has revealed her kindness, but it’s also shown her confidence, which was not always there. Connie has moved through her fears and is taking hold of her life.

What is Practical Room Design?

“Practical” means I use the existing furnishings in someone’s home to create rooms without the financial stress of a complete makeover.

Sometimes all that’s needed is a trained eye to see the possibilities. When I use furniture, collections, and accessories that have meaning to a client, she becomes a part of the creative process, and that is very important to me.

How did you discover your thing?

I have often assisted family and friends in organizing and decorating their homes. My husband looked at me one day and said, “You could get paid for doing this, you know?” So, when I turned 40, I decided I would try. It started with my job at eyedia, a consignment furniture and accessories store, and it has taken off from there.

What did you do before you started your business?

I have designed framing, managed a textile, artifact, and jewelry store, and worked in the family business learning

what it takes to make a business successful.

What skills help you with practical room designing?

There is this innate visual thing I have that is about finding balance and cohesiveness in a room. I might see what needs to

be changed immediately, or sometimes I have to step away from the space to design. I occasionally wake up in the middle of the night with the answer.

The other skill is being a good listener. Assisting a client to conceptualize how a room will look with her things requires paying

attention and sometimes reading between the lines. It has to be her story that comes through, not mine.

What obstacles have you had?

The little voice in my head that said, “You can’t design. You don’t have an interior design degree.” I’ve realized the design

field is so vast, and there is room for every level out there.

What is your favorite part of your job?

It’s exciting when I can take furniture from different periods and make it all work together. Or when I tell a client they can still use that sideboard or kitchen hutch of Grandma’s. Just use it in a different way in a different room.

How are you brave?Any time you create,

you are putting a part of yourself out there for the world to see. That is bravery to me. I now can look in the mirror and say that I possess creativity that is uniquely mine.

What advice do you have for others?

What are you passionate about? Surround yourself with an environment that nurtures you in that direction. Encourage others to do the same, because when you invest in someone else, you will always feel encouraged yourself.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I am a magazine junkie. Some of my favorites are: Elle Décor, Veranda, and Traditional Home.

What is not your thing?Sitting in front of a

computer.

What took you so long to find “your thing?”

Life took over. I was focused on getting a job and starting a family. Then I realized, I am kind of good at this, but I didn’t have the guts. When you get a little age on you...you gain that confidence. There is room for all of us. Nobody does it the same way…nobody!

Do your THingBe Brave

Create a focal point in your room. Begin placing your furniture and accessories around it to create a cohesive space.

Abstain from buying anything until you have decided how you want to live in that room.

De-clutter. Your stuff needs a place to live.Balance, balance, balance. Your room is not

“I’ve kept a secret from my husband several years. We owe some money that he doesn’t know about. I thought I’d address it later, and now it’s out of hand. I’ve been working extra to pay down the

total, but it’s a slow process. Now, we are working on refinancing our mortgage, and I know he’ll discover this debt. Should I tell him first? Will he forgive me? We’ve had a wonderful marriage with no issues until this one. Do you have any advice for me?”

Lexi Neel, 17, started showing dogs seriously about three years ago,

and next month she is headed to the Westminster Dog Show with her Lowchen, Roary.

As she learned to groom

her own dogs, Lexi started taking grooming clients so she could pay for her dog show entry fees. Her business has grown to include boarding at her Southern Indiana residence.

A mentor has played a large part in Lexi’s success. Atlanta Lowchen breeder Donna Jones has been teaching her the business. Learn more about Lexi and her five Lowchens at www.dogsgowoof.com.

Believing truly that “Women need to make time to have fun,” Cynthia Gonzalez

tries to put a spark of fun into everything she does — whether she is having a trunk show at her home for clients or spending time with her kids, ages 10 and 12. Since changing careers

over a year ago, Cynthia has committed herself to doing more of the things she loves.

Fashion i’m Wearing“A cocoon top that is 100 percent silk.

You can wear it tucked in with a suit, pants, or skirt, but my favorite way to wear it is untucked

over leggings because of how it drapes. This is my go-to piece.”

moisturizer i’m Loving“I had never used a moisturizer because of my

skin sensitivities, but I am using Neutrogena Natural Moisturizer and the Neutrogena

Purifying Facial Cleanser. My skin has been responding very well, and it feels better.

I bought it from Walgreen’s.”

Latest Purchase i’m Praising“I bought a pair of ballet arm warmers.

They have thumb holes and keep you warm when the temperature changes. You can roll

them up and keep them in your purse.”
