    TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2015 5F EATURESLOVE.LIFE.

    Roll of the die

other more and more every time we would be together.Maybe we could even all traveltogether. They both love travel-ing and I’m sure they wouldhave so much fun exploring anew place.

I pictured him introducingme to his family. He would in-troduce me as the guy who

helped him through difficult de-cisions in his work and his fi-nances, and they would appre-ciate me for it. I would assurethem that their little boy was ingood hands, and that I woulddo my best to protect him andmake sure that he was happy every day.

Most of all, I pictured usgrowing old together. One day, decades from now, we wouldlook at our pictures and remem-ber all the beautiful momentsthat we spent by each other’sside. Then I would take hishand and smile at him. Wemade it. We are still togetherafter all these years. And we

would spend the rest of ourlives going through more ad-

ventures with our hands held.It was a great future that I

planned for us.Sadly, we never got the

chance to reach it. It wasn’t asingle big issue that broke us; it

was a lot of little things, littlethings that I failed to consideras I was working my way to-

ward our future. It hurts whenever I look at

our pictures together. It hurts whenever I reread those mes-sages laced with sweet nothingsthat we have sent to each other

when we are still so in love. Thelove that we have shared is nownothing more than a memory. Allthose days we have spent togeth-

er, all the effort we put into mak-

ing our relationship work, they are now just part of a road thatled to a dead end.

But more than losing what we had in the past , what real-ly hurts me the most is losingthe future that I have been soeager to spend with him. Ithought that if we workedhard enough for it, we would

definitely keep moving for- ward . I thou ght that as longas we made the right set of choices, we would eventually reach that goal of forever.

As it turns out, making achoice is just like rolling a die.Every choice we make doesn’thave just one possible outcome. There will always be other pos-sibilities. No matter how hard

we work for something to hap-pen, a part of it will always beup to chance.

I’m already too exhausted toroll that die again, to startbuilding another future, but Iguess there’s no other way outof this. I have to take that roll, and just be brave enough toface the new possibilities that it

will bring. But here I am today, still

stuck in the rubble of what usedto be our future. The walls havecrumbled and I have to acceptthat there’s nothing more I can

do here. Perhaps it’s time forme to accept that it has fallenapart far beyond repair.

It’s time to dig through therubble and get that die back.

JASON Paul “Jap”  Nishiguchi is a software guy  who frequently make s the mis-take of trying to approach loveas a series of logical proposi-tions. To compensate for this,he likes to read blogs, as they help him understand love from

    other people’s perspectives.

    By Jason Paul Nishiguchi

In an episode of “Community,” the characters weretrying to decide who among them will go out toget pizza. Naturally, everyone was too lazy to vol-

unteer, so they resorted to rolling a die. At that point Abed, the resident nerd, declared that they were creat-ing six different timelines.

    He pondered on what those

timelines might lead to, and therest of the episode was spent ex-ploring those different possibili-ties. It was a fun episode, andthe possibilities ranged fromgross, to dark, to downrightcrazy.

It was an interesting concept, how a simple roll of a die couldpresent many different possibili-ties in our future. It could makeone think of destiny, chance, fate or other things like that.

Personally, however, I’ve nev-er been a fan of those things.I’m the kind of guy who be-lieves that everything that hap-pens to us is a direct result of our choices. As long as we havea clear goal in our head, we canarrange the choices we make toreach that goal, and nothing

will have to be left to chance.I met a really great guy

while I was a couple of monthsinto a “no boyfriend policy.” I

don’t really remember why Iput up that policy in the firstplace. It was probably because Ihad just finished playing aroundand was still in the process of figuring out my next steps inlife. But then I met him, thischarming guy who was smartand funny and everything else Icould hope for in a partner. Thereally great thing about it wasthat he was also really into me.With every date, every night to-gether, every karaoke session,

we found ourselves falling a lit-tle bit more for each other.

The fact that he and I metmay have been up to chance, but I knew that it would be upto me whether or not he wasgoing to stay in my life. So, onenight, in our first out-of-towntogether, while we were intoxi-cated with liquor and with thesummer night’s romance, I took the plunge and asked him to bemy boyfriend.

    What followed were some of

    my happiest days. Our relation-

ship made me remember how wonderful it was to love and tobe loved. We went on countlessdates, movies, dinners andnights out with friends. Wetraveled to many differentplaces, met so many people to-gether. But what I loved most

were the nights we spent justlying in my bed. We talked, shared with each other the kindof people we had been and thekind of people we aspire to be.

And we talked about the futureand how happy we were to befacing it together.

We had several problemsalong the way. There were plen-ty of times when I wondered

what would have happened if Ihad not asked him to be my boyfriend. What if I had chosento stay single? What if I hadchosen a different guy to be my partner? But no, I didn’t wantto linger on those possibilities.

This was the path I took notfrom a roll of a die but from aconscious choice. As long as Ikept choosing to stay in thatpath, I will be able to see itthrough to the goal of forever.

In my head, I started build-ing a future for us.

I pictured us living in thesame house. We would go to

Spotify celebrates  1st birthday in PH

SPOTIFY, the world’s most popu-lar music streaming service, re-

veals that the Philip pines is itssecond fastest-growing marketglobally as well as its biggestmarket in the Asia-Pacific region.

The music streaming servicehas struck a chord with music-

loving Filipinos, celebrating arecord-breaking 2.5 billion mu-sic streams from music fansacross Luzon, Visayas and Min-danao—the highest number of streams garnered from any Asianmarket a year from launch.

“We are absolutely thrilled by the warm welcome we’ve re-ceived from Pinoy music fans,”says Spotify (Asia) Managing Di-rector Sunita Kaur. “We want tocelebrate a year of amazing mu-

sic. We are so looking forward to working with more of our fans’favorite OPM artists and ensur-ing Spotify remains the center of their music experience.”

According to Spotify data, theservice is being used by one outof five Filipinos with internet ac-cess. Almost 60 percent of music

fans are streaming Spotify on mo-bile, and 70 percent of all Spotify subscribers are using the service

with Globe, a testam ent to theservice’s successful partnership

     with leading telecommunicationscompany Globe Telecom.

    “Our exclusive partnership

with Spotify is proof to our com-mitment to enabling the Filipinodigital lifestyle by giving our cus-tomers access to the best musicexperience on their devices. Withour GoSURF Mobile and Tattoohome broadband plan offeringssteadily growing customer up-take, more and more Filipinos arediscovering the wonderful worldof music streaming through Spoti-fy,” said Globe Senior Advisor forConsumer Business Dan Horan.

Up Dharma Down’s  Tadhanaranks as the most streamed OPMsong since launch, followed by

Yeng Co ns ta nt in o’ s   Ikaw   an dSa’Yo  by Silent Sanctuary. TheEraserheads remain the moststreamed OPM artists on the ser-

vi ce , fo ll ow ed by MY MP an d Yeng Constantino.

    PH gears for ‘digital

lifestyle capital’ titleBros. Entertainment, HOOQ hassurpassed the 1 million mark instreaming minutes viewed sinceit launched in February this

year. The HOOQ app has alsogenerated over 30,000 down-loads from iTunes and GooglePlay store.

The Filipinos’ love for appsand content encouraged Globeto introduce the innovative ser-

vice called new myLifestylePlan. According to the article,“Globe automatically throws in

what used to be its core ser- vices, the regular calls andtexts, as a basic unlimited ser-

vice for about US$14, thengives its Filipino users the op-tion of various data allocationsand lifestyle bundles.”

The new myLifestyle Planprovides Globe customers ac-cess to paid content and appsas add on offers in postpaidplans. Such strategy enablesmore Filipinos to follow theNBA Playoffs, enjoy the free-dom to select songs at ease viaSpotify, choose amongst the

widest set of movies and TV shows through HOOQ without

worrying about data cost, andcontinuously keep in touch

with friends, among otherthings. With this, they can usetheir data allocation for otherInternet services and focusmore on adding to the stead-fast climb of social media dataproduced in the country.

Globe Telecom’s impressiveperformance was also a resultof better network experience

with 100-percent 3G and 4GHSPA+ nationwide coverage as

well as the increasing pervasive-ness of its LTE network aroundthe country.

The Philippines currently has 44.2 million Internet users,90 percent of which have ac-tive social media accounts. Itcurrently leads in average Timespent on the Internet throughlaptop and desktop, and one of the highest via mobile world-

wide. It also records the high-est total screen time spent insocial networking with 42 per-cent based on the We are So-

    cial’s Digital Report.

GLOBE Telecom leads the drive towards posi-tioning the country as the “Digital LifestyleCapital of the World” through fast and easy da-

ta access as well as highly-affordable content and apps. This was noted in a story

carried by highly-influential American online news aggrega-

tor Huffington Post entitled“Philippines: A Digital LifestyleCapital in the Making?” The ar-ticle talks about the local DigitalLifestyle landscape which it de-fines as “one’s reality poweredby apps, sites, and gadgets thatcompliment one’s physicallifestyle.”

“Mobile operators along withlocal mobile phone brands drivesmartphone and mobile internetpenetration in the Philippines.

Globe Telecom, the leading net- work for smartphones coveringdata traffic of 87,000 terabytes

with an increase of 270 percent year-on-year (compared to itsmain competitor, PLDT Group48,000 terabytes of data with167-percent growth) has strong-ly influenced the digital lifestyleof Filipinos,” it stated.

As of March 2015, Globe mo-bile data revenues significantly grew by 58 percent from previ-

ous year’s P2.8 billion and by 8percent from previous quarter’sP4.1 billion. Meanwhile, com-bined mobile Internet revenuesof Smart and Sun rose by 19percent to P2.2 billion fromP1.9 billion in the same threemonths of last year.

Propelling the growth of thecompany’s mobile data business

were its partnerships with glob-al content providers such asGoogle, Facebook, Viber, Spoti-fy, NBA, HOOQ, and WhatsApp

    to enrich the customer experi-ence.

“The surge in mobile dataservices was spurred by the im-pact of our data adoptionstrategies from the Free Face-book and Free Viber campaigns,as well as the growing smart-phone and mobile browsingadoption among Globe cus-tomers. This also reflects on thephenomenal growth of our mo-bile data business which in

turn, secures our position as the

purveyor of the Filipino digitallifestyle,” said Dan Horan, Se-nior Advisor for Consumer Busi-

ness at Globe. He added: “We believe that

this is the most appropriatepath for us to meet the chang-ing needs of our customers asthe world of data becomes morepervasive in their lives. With thegrowing adoption to more con-nected devices, Globe expectsits mobile data business to cre-ate deep revenue streams forthe company in both the nearand long-term period.”

For instance, the Philippinesbecame one of Facebook’s firstsuccessful test beds for the con-cept of free Facebook throughthe relationship with Globe in2013. The service, which wasinitially offered for threemonths, paved the way forGlobe to double its mobile datauser base and increase its mo-bile browsing and other datarevenues by 42 percent by end-2013 as compared to the previ-

ous year.Likewise, Spotify, the world’s most popular musicstreaming service, reveals thatthe Philippines is its secondfastest-growing market globally as well as its biggest market inthe Asia-Pacific region. An ex-clusive partner of Globe, themusic streaming service cele-brated a record-breaking 2.5billion music streams from mu-sic fans across Luzon, Visayasand Mindanao—the highest

number of streams garneredfrom any Asian market a yearfrom launch.

At the same time, online en-tertainment service HOOQ con-tinues to gain traction amongentertainment-loving Pinoysthrough the team-up withGlobe, enabling access over10,000 international and localmovies and TV series acrossmultiple devices. A joint ven-ture between Singtel, Sony Pic-
