Bay Elorde: Still my greatest Pinoy boxer ever pion. My whole family as other

families in our neighborhood inPaco, Manila and elsewhereacross the country were tunedin to the radio for the blow by blow account of that fight by the great Willie Hernandez if memory serves, and when the

verdict was announced tearsflowed down the cheeks of my beloved mother, Remedios andmy sisters while my father,Gabriel and my brothers sat orstood sad and speechless. I wasbarely 12 then and already aboxing fan and I can’t forgetthat moment.

Bay was well loved by Pinoys of his time not only forbreaking our long drought for

world boxing championship andcarrying on with the finest tra-dition of Pancho Villa and Ce-

ferino Garcia but for his sim-

plicity, humility and generousi-ty--- his secret charity works

were of legendary stuff equalled only by his bosombuddy, the late great movie ac-tor Fernando Poe Jr. who wasalso beloved by Pinoys.

If he had his way, Elorde would have fought on muchlonger but he was so treasuredthat the government throughthe GAB had to revoke his li-cense in 1971 so as to preservehis legacy.

Another unique thing aboutElorde was that he never losthis popularity and appeal longafter he had retired from box-ing ( much like another of hiscontemporary, Muhammad Ali).

In fact, Bay became evenmore familiar and popular inhis retirement years when he

    appeared in San Miguel Corpo-

ration commercials alongsideother icons of his time. His“Isang Platitong Mani” TV ad isregarded as the best, most suc-cessful commercial in thePhilippine TV commecial adver-tisement history. He is alsoknown for another of his one-liner ad, ” Wag bara bara, bay”.

Though he had appeared incameo roles in some hit Pinoy action movies during his hey-days, Elorde was really neverinto show business or endorsingproducts.

He also never entertainedentering politics and parlayinghis immense popularity and in-fluence to winning the mayoral-ty in his native Bogo City in Ce-bu or a seat at the Batasanthough many, even then Presi-dent Marcos reportedly tried tocoax him.

IT seemed that the AranetaColesium was built in anticipa-tion of that fight and Elorde’slong reign as it became a venueof many of Bay’s bouts and titledefenses especially againstfierce rivals as Rivas, Boysaw,Terou Kosaka, Love Allotey.Johnny Bizzaro and Suh Kang Iland even his initial failed at-tempt to win the lightweightcrown from Puerto Rican greatCarlos Ortiz who stopped himin the 14th round in February 1964.

The quest for the lightweighttitle and beating Ortiz, a sawedoff welterweight, proved toomuch for Elorde and after los-ing to the same Ortiz by 14thround KO in their rematch in

    1966 at the famed Madison

Square Garden in New York,Elorde was never the samefighter again.

Having used to seeing him win and defend the title for along time,Pinoy fans then seemto just take it for granted thatthey had a world champion inElorde.

But fear and concerns startedto grip the nation when it wasannounced that Bay would haveto stake his world title in Japanon June 15, 1967 against the

young stylist, Cassius Clay-fightalike challenger Yoshiaki Numa-ta who had unseated him asOPBF lightweight champion a

     year earlier.The fear and concerns

proved real as Elorde was de-clared loser by majority deci-sion to Numata, ending hismore than seven year reign as
