TUADLES VILLIAMIN ASAYTONO
Sayang: Azkalsmuntik taluninang Thailand
Before the game I wouldhave taken zero zero but nowafter the game I feel it is ashame we did not score and
win, sabi ni Azkals coachThomas Dooley. I am happywith how the team played. Overthe past few days I could sensea growing confidence.
Dagdag ni Dooley: Thisgame was another step forward
just as it was after the gameagainst Indonesia. We didnt
win but we should be happywith the way we played.
Naniniwala si Dooley uubraang kanyang mga alagad saBangkok.
If we can hold them for thefirst 15 to 20 minutes (onWednesday) I think we can havea good chance. They will try anddo everything to beat us at homeand we just have to be ready.
Bago maranasan ang hagupitng Azkals ay dominado ng mgasThais ang kanilang grupo.
We now know we can playat this level, diin ni Phil
Younghusband.

(SADLY) No justice for Tuadles, King, Asaytono and VillaminBy Teddy Reynoso
IN excluding four of its illustri-ous pioneers--- Arnulfo Tuadles,
Abe King, Nelson Asaytono andElpidio Yoyoy Villamin---amongthe additional fifteen players tocomplete the leagues fortygreatest players, the PhilippineBasketball Association (PBA)
seems to want us ,hard corefans to remember and celebrateits 40th year by forgetting itsfirst 25 years.
While not as popular andglamourous or revered as manyof the first twenty five playersacclaimed as the greatest to seeaction in Asias first play forplay league, most of whom weretheir contemporaries, the fourhad undebiably left their markin their respective careers span-
ning the PBAs formative yearsin the late 70s through its gold-en age in the 1990s.
When these four were stillshowing their wares in the PBA,the league was the undisputedking of prime time televisionand its games were grists oftalks and endless, sometimesheated debates in the street, barber shops and parlors, schools and offices the followingmorning. And in many occa-sions, these four were involved
or on top of the talked about ac-
tions.Who could forget the then
youthful Arnie Tuadles immedi-ately creating an impact on theleague in his rookie year, evenmaking it to the season mythicalfirst team amidst teammatesand opposition who have hadroots with the old MICAA?
For Tuadles, there was nosuch thing as sophomore jinx ashe proceeded to establish him-
self as a force to be reckonedwith the following season andmany seasons afterwards in hisprime playing years spanningmore than a baker dozen years.
Who coud forget Tuadlesshutting down Crispas out-standing import Glen Hagan ina crucial game or stepping up inthe absence of Prestos top gun,
Allan Caidic and making amince meat out of every defend-
er thrown against him by thepowerhouse Purefoods squad?
Who could forget King tower-ing in rebounds and in defenseagainst taller, heftier local cen-ters and even foreign importsand indeed even visiting foreigncagers from Brazil and Yu-goslavia?
Who could forget San
Miguel, as its then great coachRon Jacobs aptly put it, livingand dying with Nelson
Asaytono? Asaytono, a hero forthe last all-amateur nationalteam to win a medal in the
Asian Games back in 1986 and avital cog in the multi-titled Pure-foods team for many years be-fore transfering to SMB, wasscoring almost a third of Jacobteams total output!
Who could forget Villamin,
who started out with the goldmedal RP Youth team in the ear-ly 80s, earned his spurs with theamateur powehouse Apcor teamand languished as a role player
with Crispa, coming on to hisown as a tower of power in var-ious PBA teams he joined in hisstoried career, earning the titleas the Bicolano Superman ( visa vis Black Superman, Billy RayBates )
Indeed how can we remem-ber PBAs 40 years without these
four great cagers? There is a reason why the In-
ternational Boxing Hall of Fameand other recognition-givingbodies in boxing prescribe a pe-riod of five years after the re-tirement of a top boxer beforehe becomes eligible for nomina-tion and induction. It takes thatlong for a boxers career accom-
plishments to be fully imbibedand objectively judged upon byboth fans and experts as to theirimpact and contribution to thefight sport. Given this, there isample time for fair reckoning
while affording the boxer to besubjected to the test of time, ei-ther he is still remembered orforgotten within the period.
While the system is not per-fect, it has worked well in deter-mining the worthiness of nomi-nees and inductees in the annu-al boxing award,
In the PBA, it is different. The league would want to
recognize the new crop of its so-called greatest players beforetime could pass judgement uponthem and fearfully, their currentadoring fans began to forgetthem.
Call me old-fashioned but al-ready a senior citizen, I donthave a short memory as those inthe so-called special committee
that left out the four in the cold!
