How Dolphy lost his battle with COPDBy Marge C. Enriquez

ERIC Quizon was on his way to theUnited States when his father, comedyking Dolphy, asked him to buy aportable oxygen concentrator.

lethargic. Aside fromfrequent coughs andshortness of breath,Dolphy would com-plain of tiredness af-ter taking a few steps.

After bringinghome the oxygen con-centrator, a healthcaredevice, Quizon did

some research. Thedevice was for pa-tients with chronicobstructive pulmonarydisease or COPD.

Its a machinethat would help himbreathe better. Hebrought it along

wherever he went,recalls Quizon.

During the Dol-phy at 80 tour in theUS in 2008, Quizoncarried a medical cer-tificate for the airlineto allow his father tobring his oxygen con-centrator.

On the third leg ofthe tour, Dolphysblood pressure wentup; the comedian wasscared. In theprayers before theshow, he cried, Lord

please help me.There were doctorsand nurses around.We were worried. Butafter the applause, hisBP normalized, saysQuizon.

At a family lun-cheon, Dolphy finallyrevealed his conditionto his 18 children. It

was emotional for us,knowing there was no

cure for the disease.There was no timelinegiven. He said he

would just slowly de-teriorate. It was diffi-cult for us because weknew he would finallysuccumb to COPD,Quizon recounts.

Breathing testCOPD is a progres-

sive lung ailment thatmakes breathing diffi-cult and invariablyleads to death. In thePhilippines, it is theseventh killer disease,

while in America, itranks third. Althoughsmoking is the maincause, passive smok-ers or people who areconstantly exposed tocigarette smoke arealso prone.

Dr. Bernice Ong-dela Cruz, medical

education head of the

COPD Council andlung specialist at theChinese General Hos-pital, observes thatpatients usually cometo her when they arealready in the laterstages of COPD. Thesymptoms manifest

very slowly, such thatpeople dont realizethey are sick.

Most of Dr. DelaCruzs COPD patients

were smokers.Stubborn

Dolphy was a clas-sic example of a chainsmoker who quitsmoking but acquiredCOPD later in life.

Eric says his fatherwas already asthmaticsince childhood. The

weak lungs were ag-

gravated by Dolphysthree packs-a-dayhabit.

Growing up,Quizon recalls howhis father and hisbuddies spent daysplaying poker athome while smokingand drinking. Thehouse smelled like acigarette factory.

At age 45, Dolphyquit smoking when he

was diagnosed withemphysema, a lungdisease characterizedby shortness of breathdue to over-inflatedair sacs.

More than 30years later, Dolphydiscovered he wassuffering from COPD.The damage to hislungs continued toprogress with age, de-

spite his having quit

smoking.Dolphy initially re-

quested his long-timepartner Zsa Zsa Padil-la to keep quiet aboutit so that his children

wouldnt worry. Ulti-mately, the childrenhad to be informed.

At a TV networkevent, Dolphy, whocould still do a mean

dance in his lateryears, suddenly col-lapsed out of exhaus-tion after his number.

The doctors saidhis condition wouldntget better. He wasStage 3 then. When

we announced hiscondition to the fami-ly, the COPD wasStage 4. Yet he man-aged to live for three

more years, saysQuizon.Dolphy stubbornly

refused to rest. Hetold his children thathe would die from in-activity, not fromCOPD.

Quizon directedhis father in Nobody,

Nobody but Juanforthe Metro ManilaFilm Festival in 2009.

Although he lookedlike his normal selfonscreen, he wasfragile on the set.

I made sure hewas taken care of onthe set. During cam-era rehearsals, Dad

would sit while hisbody double playedout his parts. Duringthe take, he would doit himself, recallsQuizon.

Dolphy asked him

again to direct FatherJejemonfor the 2011Metro Manila FilmFestival, but Quizon

was adamant. He toldhis father that it wasagainst doctors or-ders, and he didnt

want to be riskingDolphys health onthe set.

He stopped talk-ing to me. He askedmy cousin Frank GreyJr. to direct it becausehe said I didnt wantto do it, says Quizon.

Nonetheless he vis-ited his father duringthe filming. By then,Dolphy was

wheelchair-bound.Somebody had tohelp him stand up.Once he stood up, he

walked a few steps.

Every 15 meters, hehad difficulty breath-ing, says Quizon. Inthe movie, Dolphysshortness of breath

was glaring.After the shoot,

Dolphy got doublepneumonia and be-came bedridden. Hislegs shook when hetried to stand up.Physical therapy ses-

sions were futile.At the hospital,doctors told him thathe was walking a fineline between life anddeath. In mid-2012,Dolphys health

would fluctuate be-tween optimism andnear-death. He caughtpneumonia 13 times,the last of which, anunlucky number, be-came fatal.

My dad was afighter, says Quizon.Dolphy died on July10, 2012 at age 83.

Today, Quizon andhis brother Epy arepart of an advocacyto create awarenessof COPD. The mes-sage is, its never toolate to quit bad habitsand take proper careof ones respiratory

health.

The son had suspi-cions. He observed
