QueensvilleWhat a booming residential hotspot Queensville is! Currently home to 750, this area of EastGwillimbury is slated for major growth over the coming years, with a projection of eventuallybeing home to 30,000 residents. Plans are in theworks formajor development in the 50-hectareQueensville Centre, which will add commercial venues, as well as thousands of jobs in anEmployment Area along the Highway 404 extension. Among the possibilities for these venuesare retail stores, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, business and medical offices, fire andpolice services, as well as recreational, educational, cultural and religious facilities. The Villageof Queensville encompasses a public park with tennis courts, a softball diamond, playgroundand the largest Antique Mall in York Region. In addition, lands have been designated for apost-secondary institution to be located within Queensville.

SharonOriginally settled in the early 1800s by United Empire Loyalists (many of them Quakers), Sharon is nowhome to about 3,000, and is expected to experience population growth to 12,000. The Town is takingcare to respect the area’s heritage traditions through carefully designed architecture and lower densitydevelopment. This Village is well known for its heritage buildings and structures, including the SharonTemple, aNationalHistoricSite&Museum(sharontemple.ca) that features concerts, educationalprogramsand festivals. Built by the Children of Peace, this structure was a showcase for their vision for a societybased on peace, equality and social justice. The nearby Sharon Burying Ground is the resting place formany members of the Children of Peace, with the oldest tombstones dating backto the 1820s. The Town’s Civic Centreis also located in Sharon, in a locationthat will eventually become a vibrantTown Square.

Holland Landing – River Park DriveCurrently home to 9,000, Holland Landing – River Park Drive is likely to grow to encompass20,000 in the future. A major draw for new home buyers in this area is the fact that theEast Gwillimbury GO Station is situated in Holland Landing, making it a natural choice forcommuters. Families appreciate its elementary schools and branch of the East GwillimburyPublic Library. In addition, water-lovers and avid boaters love living here because the EastHolland River bisects the area, with several marinas available along the stretch of water. A trailsystem connects East Gwillimbury to the trails in Newmarket and Aurora, which is a popularfeature for walkers and joggers. Some of the original small frame cottages on River Park Driveare still in use today, many with enhancements.

Mount AlbertAnother growing section of East Gwillimbury is Mount Albert, which is situated on a scenichill in the eastern section of the municipality. Originally part of an Algonquin Indian trail, inthe early 19th Century, it was settled by many of the area’s original residents. Currently hometo approximately 4,200 residents, Mount Albert is expected to grow in population to about

6,000. Among theamenities familiesenjoy are the MountAlbert CommunityCentre on MainStreet and the MountAlbert branch of EastGwillimbury PublicLibrary on CentreStreet. Centre is thearea’s prominentthoroughfare, and isan ideal spot for redevelopment as more people move into this picturesque area. TheMount Albert Downtown area is slated for revitalization in the upcoming years.

For more information on this burgeoning municipality, visit www.eastgwillimbury.ca.

OHBA ReAdy tO WORk WitH GOveRnmentOn OntARiO’s ClimAte CHAnGe ACtiOn PlAnRecently the provincial government released

Ontario’s Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP).The action plan commits to lowering greenhouse

gas emissions by 15 per cent by 2020, 37 per cent by 2030and 80 per cent by 2050.The CCAP has specific actions that impact new housing

and land-use planning, including:• Home Energy Rating and Disclosure (HERD):

Energy audits would be required before a new orexisting single-family home can be listed for sale, andthe energy rating will be included in the real estatelisting. These audits are intended to be provided freeof charge under this plan.

• A rebate for high-performance: Rebates will goto individuals who purchase or build their ownnear net zero carbon emission homes, with energyefficiency performance that sufficiently exceeds therequirements of the Building Code.

• Funding for new technologies for homes: Assistanceto homeowners to purchase and install low-carbonenergy technologies such as geothermal heat pumpsand air-source heat pumps, solar thermal and solarenergy generation systems.

• Building Code Changes: Update the Building Codewith long-term energy efficiency targets for new netzero carbon emission small buildings by 2030.

• Retrofitting existing private apartments: Incentivesto install energy-efficient technologies, like boilerreplacements, adaptive thermostats and lightingretrofits.

• Electric-Vehicle-Ready Homes: Require all newhomes with garages to be constructed with a 50-amp,240-volt receptacle.

“OHBA has been a long-time supporter of a homeenergy rating system for existing homes as well as aconsumer rebate for newly-constructed homes thatexceed the Ontario Building Code. We are encouragedthat both these recommendations are included inOntario’s Climate Change Action Plan,” said Joe Vaccaro,CEO, Ontario Home Builders’ Association. When the 2017 Building Code comes into effect in

January 2017, houses constructed after that point willconsume only 50 per cent of the energy they would haveused in 2005.The Building Code primarily deals with newconstruction, which comprises only one per cent of theoverall building stock on an annual basis, that’s why itis essential to improve the existing 4.8 million homes inOntario.Achieving a 2030 net zero Building Code will require

extensive consultation with the industry and thenecessary cost-benefit analysis for consumers.“With over 30 per cent of Ontario’s new homes being

Energy Star qualified,OHBAmembers are already leadersin building high-performance homes,” said Vaccaro. “Weneed to ensure that the upgrades we make to the 2030Building Code are worth it to the consumer.”The Ontario Home Builders’ Association is the voice

of the building, land development and professionalrenovation industry in Ontario representing 4,000member companies organized into 30 local associationsacross the province. Our members have built over700,000 homes in the last 10 years in over 500 Ontariocommunities. The industry contributes over $45 billionto Ontario’s economy and employs over 325,000 peopleacross the province.
