The fourth annual T Bar Invitational golf tournament was once again an unprecedented success, raising over $40,000.00 for youth in the beef industry. Seven national junior breed associations representing 2,018 members, will gain the benefit from the generosity of our sponsors. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Western Agribition Junior Beef Extreme. “We are extremely happy with this year’s event. Our largest number of sponsors and golfers made this year a resounding success. In the last four years, we have raised nearly $150,000.00, which provides funding and opportunities to a great number of youth,” said Bryan Kostiuk, co-chairman of the tournament. The 2012 T Bar Invitational will be held at Dakota Dunes on June 19 and 20th. See www.tbarinvitational.com for more information.

Today’s Angus Advantage Summer 2011 19
Demand for Angus cattle has never been stronger across North America. As the beef industry has become increasingly consumer focused, cattlemen and their ultimate customers have increasingly turned to Angus cattle and Angus beef. The Certified Angus Beef (CAB) brand has made several presentations and farm visits in Canada this year, indicating a commitment to working with producers here to further develop the high-quality market for the greater good of Angus producers across the continent. An informal CAB visit to Don and Jeannette Currie’s Glen Islay Angus Farm at Nottawa, Ontario, last year provided an opportunity for a closer look at the rationale. It resonates across the country, regardless of herd size or location.“I have judged live cattle shows around the world,” Don Currie says, “but I always stress that we have to pay special attention to what’s under the hide, not just what the cattle look like in the ring or on the ranch. That’s why we try to raise the most problem-free, functional cattle that also have the quality to bring in market premiums by meeting CAB brand criteria. “The reason we are in the business is to please consumers so that they will buy more beef,” he says. “One of the most exciting trends we are seeing today is that consumers, producers, feeders, packers and purveyors are finding common ground, and CAB helps bring us together. “On our place in the Pretty River Valley, we don’t have a huge Angus herd. But in the big picture, neither does Canada. That means we all have to focus on quality more than just quantity. When we started back in 1968 — 10 years before there was a CAB program — Angus calves sold at a discount. The premiums they earn today are thanks in large part to the success of CAB in working for us to build demand.”
Currie welcomed the chance to host CAB meat scientist Phil Bass, along with Garry Lawson of Macgregor’s Foodservice in Toronto. “Macgregors has been a CAB licensed partner for about 20 years, and Garry has been with them even longer than that,” Currie notes. “He knows exactly what chefs and consumers want today, and it is not more pounds of just any beef.”Lawson says he appreciates the opportunity to learn from producers who focus on customer needs. “I have been to a lot of cattlemen’s meetings where there are ranchers and feeders and even bankers, but nobody to represent the end user,” he says. “For most of the industry, the disconnect is huge. But it is encouraging to talk to those who know performance doesn’t stop on the ranch or even the feedlot.“To my customers, performance means the beef can be marketed in thick, juicy and flavorful cuts that fit on the plate and deliver on eating quality time after time. Let’s face it, beef is getting to be an expensive item for lots of people, so it better be close to perfect or we won’t get their return business,” Lawson says.According to CAB International Director Geof Bednar, when the brand first licensed packing plants in Canada, it projected nearly half of the 15 million pounds sold there in 2000 would come from Canadian ranches. In fact, nearly 20 million pounds of CAB product was sold by Canadian grocers and restaurants that year, half of it from within the country. “There were some ups and downs, and Canadians produced more than the 14 million pounds sold there in 2004, exporting the rest,” he notes. But in 2006 and every year since then, sales have grown and 2010 saw a record 17 million pounds of CAB produced within Canada, but that was just 57.7% of all CAB sales in the country. “That amounts to at least a 12-million-pound opportunity,” Bednar says.

Today’s Angus Advantage Summer 2011 20
It took nearly 20 years to prime the economic pump in the U.S. to where cattlemen supplying the brand received significant rewards. Since 1998 however, packers have paid U.S. producers more than $300 million in grid premiums directly associated with the CAB brand. The past 10 years has averaged $25 million per year. “This year is like 1998 for the CAB program in Canada,” Bednar says. “The premiums for producers are gearing up, and quality rewards will gain more producer focus.”Currie agrees. “We see a bright future for the kind of Angus cattle that are increasingly selected and managed to hit the high-quality target,” he says. “Again, it is not enough that they just look good, because less than 20% of black cattle can meet the carcass quality specifications in Canadian plants today. We know producers who have really focused on it for years have achieved several times better than that and added a lot of value to their cattle. We’re aiming for top quality.”For more information on the Certified Angus Beef® brand, visit www.CABpartners.com to sign up for CAB Connections; or to discuss how and why Canadian producers can work more closely with the brand, email [email protected].

Don and Jeannette Currie own and operate Glen Islay Angus in
the scenic Pretty River Valley, part of the Blue Mountains, about 100 miles
north of Toronto.
Don is the fifth generation on the farm. He grew up with purebred Shorthorn cattle and started his
Angus herd in 1968. They calve fifty-five cows at home and own sixty more cows that are out on shares.
They do not show cattle regularly but have bred the Grand and Reserve Grand Champions at the
Royal Winter Fair eleven times since 1990, as well as Grand Champion bull at Agribition.
Don has judged three times in Australia and in every province in Canada except Newfoundland.
This is the sixth time he has judged the National Angus show in Canada.
Don looks forward to judging in Brandon in November.

CALGARY, AB — Assiniboia Livestock Auction has been chosen as the Canadian Angus Association’s 2010 Auction Market of the Year in recognition of their work promoting Angus and Angus cross cattle. Brian Good, Commercial Fieldman for the Canadian Angus Association, presented the award at the Livestock Markets Association of Canada annual convention on June 10.
Assiniboia Livestock Auction is an affiliate of Heartland Livestock and has been in business for 25 years. Roy Rutledge and his son Ryan operate the auction market and promote Angus cattle, for the Canadian Angus Association and its members year round. They trade more Angus cattle in a year than any other auction market in Canada. In 2010, Assiniboia Livestock Auction held 5 designated Angus calf sales that consistently sold 3,000–5,000 head, an increase of 20% over last year.
The Auction Market of the Year Award was introduced in 2006 to recognize and honour those auction markets that work hard to promote Angus cattle. The first award was presented to Mankota Stockmen’s Weigh Co. at Mankota, Saskatchewan. The 2007 award was presented to B.C. Livestock Producers Co-op Williams Lake at Williams Lake, BC, the 2008 award was presented to Saskatoon Livestock Sales Ltd., and the 2009 award was presented to Provost Livestock Exchange of Alberta.

Press ReleaseAngus Breeders Raise Over $25,000 in Cancer Fundraiser
June 15, 2011: for immediate releaseCALGARY, AB — Three members of the Canadian Angus Association executive left the recent annual meeting with a lot less hair than they arrived with. Past President, Kirk Wildman, Assistant General Manager Michael Latimer and incoming CEO Rob Smith have raised over $25,000 for the Canadian Angus Foundation and the Kids with Cancer Society in a fundraising initiative dubbed the “Baldy Fundraiser.”Wildman and Latimer entered into a friendly fundraising competition in late 2010. Smith joined the cause in April. Whoever raised the most money was to have their head shaved at the Canadian Angus Association’s annual general meeting in Clear Lake, Manitoba, on June 11.However, at the meeting, a group that calls themselves the Manitoba Mafia, a group from Alberta, “Table 16”, and Bill and Sylvia Jackson of Tullamore Angus joined forces and pledged $5,000 to the cause, provided both Smith and Latimer shaved their heads as well. Wildman, Latimer and Smith all sat down and surrendered themselves to the clippers. Canadian Angus Association members who donated to the cause took turns wielding the clippers. The fundraiser has special meaning for Wildman whose mother and son both battled cancer during his term as President. Addressing the crowd gathered to witness the head shaving, Wildman said “Thank you so much for getting behind this cause and for all the support you’ve provided to my family over this difficult year.”The money raised in the fundraiser is being split evenly between the Canadian Angus Foundation, the charitable arm of the Canadian Angus Association, and the Kids with Cancer Soceity. The Canadian Angus Foundation functions to preserve and expand the Angus breed for future generations through education, youth development, scientific and market research, and historical preservation. The Canadian Angus Foundation was incorporated in 1993 and is the charitable arm of the Canadian Angus Association.

June 15, 2011: for immediate release
CALGARY, AB — High Ridge Feeders and Shannondale Farm of Manitoba received the Canadian Angus Association’s first Feedlot of the Year award in recognition of their work feeding and promoting Angus and Angus cross cattle.
CEO Doug Fee presented the award to Ed and Glori Dalke of High Ridge Feeders and Harry and Brenda Dalke of Shannondale Farm at the Canadian Angus Association’s annual general meeting banquet on Saturday, June 11.
The Dalke families had no idea that they would be receiving an award and made touching acceptance speeches about how surprised and humbled they were by the honour. They said that they use Angus cattle because they provide good results in the feedlot, and that they tremendously enjoy working with Angus breeders.
The Canadian Angus Association introduced the Feedlot of the Year award this year to recognize feedlots that promote Angus to their customers, and feed Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed tagged cattle.

20 year old Justin Hall of Craven, SK. proved his dad wrong when he was crowned UFA Steer Classic Champion.
“I actually bet my son (Justin) in the spring that his steer wouldn’t be good enough to go to Calgary, and in the past, oh, two months, I knew I was going to lose that bet” said Barry Hall, the veteran rancher from Craven.
Justin’s 1,404 pound Angus steer was awarded the best-in-breed honors, which earned him $1000 and went on to be deemed the grand champion steer at the Calgary Stampede, earning another $9000. This win comes just days after winning the Lloydminster Classic Steer Stake Show.
“I had high hopes coming in here after winning Lloyd, but you never know what can happen, it all depends on what the judge (David Longshore of Stettler, AB) wants. But it all worked out for the best,” said Justin.
The richest steer show in Canada had 98 entries this year from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.
Congratulations to Dakota and Wacey Townsend of Sylvan Lake, AB, who won the Jackpot Heifer Show at the Stampede.
Summer Synergy, a partnership created by the Calgary Stampede and the Olds Agricultural Society, brought in approximately 350 youth exhibitors along with 600 head. The week long competition includes classes in marketing, multi-species judging, conformation,

$1000 scholarships were awarded to Becky Domolewski, Taber, AB; Katelyn Dietrich, Forestburg, AB; Andie Hadway, Didsbury, AB; Wyatt Hanson, Airdrie, AB; Carling Matejka, Ponoka, AB; and Cayley Peltzer, Rosemary, AB
$500 scholarships were awarded to Jared Couch, Balzac, AB; Shallaine Daley, Carstairs, AB; Colin Fankhanel, Bashaw, AB; Josie Hadway, Didsbury, AB; Haylea Jones, Carstairs, AB; Colton McMahon, Forestburg, AB; Wacey Townsend, Sylvan Lake, AB; and Heidi Tymko, St. Paul, AB
The International Livestock Auctioneer Championship was also held at the Calgary Stampede. This year the winner was Rod Burnett of Armstrong, BC. Burnett began his career selling cars and heavy equipment. He was persuaded by his current employers, Peter and Don Raffan, owners of Valley Auction Ltd., to turn his attention to livestock.

Steps to HappinessWhen you switch your barn boots for designer boots it’s often easy to forget how to get dirty, but Cathy Wood hasn’t forgotten. Today she is still comfortable treating a sick calf or fitting cattle for the show ring, and she is equally comfortable collecting data on the computer or discussing international protocol with cattle breeders worldwide. She first chose a career as a custom cattle fitter, often starting work at 3 or 4 a.m. and finishing long after dark, merely because of her desire to work with the cattle and her fondness for the people in the industry. Cathy’s mother, Idris, was raised on a farm near Carmen, Manitoba, but when she was 16 she followed her older sister to Alberta to work as an operator for AGT, the Alberta Government Telephone Company in Drayton Valley. Cathy’s father, Terry, was also raised on a farm, near Barrhead, Alberta, but he finished school and left the farm to work for Calgary Power (now Trans Alta Utilities). While they were both working in Drayton Valley, Idris and Terry met and married. They had three children together: Shane, Cathy and Michelle. Terry’s job required the family to relocate throughout Alberta numerous times. They lived in Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Evansburg, Entwistle and twice in Barrhead. The year Cathy started Grade One; the Wood family purchased a farm just five miles north of Barrhead and settled into rural life under the name of Tilwood Farms. For readers that don’t live in Alberta, Barrhead is situated approximately 120 km northwest of Edmonton. During the 1800’s and early 1900’s Barrhead played an important role in the settlement of north-western Alberta and was a vital link in the trade route from Fort Edmonton to the Yukon. Today, Highway 33, known as the Grizzly Trail, follows the original Klondike Trail, which was the shortest route to the Yukon during the Gold Rush years. This route was key to the settlement of the Peace River region and Barrhead was a frequent stop-over for the Klondikers who needed supplies for the rigorous journey north. Today a bustling community of over 5,000 residents, the Barrhead area has dozens of fishing and recreational lakes. Situated at the southern edge of the Boreal forest, the town is still an important stop-over for travellers, but now also a destination for hunters, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts. Now that the Wood family was settled on a farm, the children naturally wanted to have animals of their own to join the Barrhead 4-H clubs. Idris Wood enlisted the help of her good friends and neighbours, Irene and Ed Molzan of Ed Rene Angus Farms, to help choose suitable Purebred Angus heifers. That was the beginning of Cathy’s passion for cattle. The Woods kept 12 or 15 Angus females at one time and 6 or 8 horses. Cathy was a member of both the Barrhead 4-H Beef Club and the 4-H Horse Club. She recalls spending every weekend during the summer months showing her horse, competing in gymkhanas, or trail riding. She also exhibited their Angus at several of the local summer fairs like Barrhead, Westlock and Mayerthorpe. As a member of the Alberta Junior Angus Association, she attended the first Bashaw National Junior Angus Heifer Show held in 1977, and

The longer I’m associated with the beef industry and the older I get, the luckier I feel to have had the opportunity to meet so many interesting and intelligent women. Often the unsung heroes of our industry are the women, and in this column I hope to share some of their lives with you. They form a diverse and devoted group who can proudly claim the titles of wife, mother, career woman and then often become secretary, bookkeeper, farmhand, entertainment co-ordinator and shrewd business partner as well.

she won Intermediate and Grand Champion Showmanship honours under the shrewd eye of Judge Gavin Hamilton. That showmanship award was one of many Cathy achieved during her junior show career. A heifer named Barbara that Cathy purchased from Spearhead Ranch showed exceptionally well for her in 4-H. Spearhead Barbara was named Provincial Champion Heifer, and her horse, Halo, also brought home numerous 4-H honours at local and regional shows. During her 4-H career, Cathy held almost every executive position in both the Barrhead 4-H Beef and Horse clubs, and she is also a Past-Treasurer for the Alberta Junior Angus Association. When Cathy was 12, her parents divorced, and when her brother Shane moved out on his own, that left Idris, Cathy and Michelle to tend to the farming. Idris was working in town as a bookkeeper for the Barrhead Co-op so Cathy and Michelle handled the daily chores. Cathy fed the calves, the 4-H heifers and the horses, and Michelle looked after the cow herd both before and after school; then they would have supper prepared when Idris came home from work. Caring for the animals taught both girls responsibility at an early age.Cathy graduated Barrhead Lorne Jenkin High School in 1979 and was accepted at the Olds College to study Livestock Production, but before the fall semester commenced, she received a phone call from Quinton Stevick, then Herdsman for Highfield Stock Farms near Okotoks. He offered her a job working with the Simmental and Charolais show cattle and she accepted. Then one of the few women on the show circuit, with the long hours and demanding show days, Cathy’s work ethic was reinforced. Highfield exhibited throughout Western Canada at the major summer and fall shows from the Vancouver PNE to Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. They also exhibited in Portland, Spokane, Denver and Phoenix, and living out of a suitcase was becoming the norm for Cathy. After working two show seasons at Highfield, she moved to Goose Lake Cattle. Co. near Calgary and worked with their Simmental show string for two years. As members of the Young Canadian Simmentalers and working at Goose Lake, Cathy and colleague, Lynn Lyons, instigated and organized the first Young Canadian Simmentalers Wild Rose Classic Show held in Alberta.Quinton and Ann Stevick purchased a farm, Bar 15 Simmentals, near Pincher Creek and once again hired Cathy to help with their new custom fitting service. Often with four people and 15 head of cattle, they were on the road summer and fall attending the major shows in Western Canada. Cathy especially remembers one particular day when she and co-worker Kerri Harriet were sent to deliver sale bulls to Rock Creek, B.C. Descending the Salmo/Creston Pass, the highest in Canada, they lost their trailer brakes. White knuckled and following a gravel truck down the mountain, Cathy managed to manoeuvre the truck and trailer to the bottom. It is an experience that will bond the girls forever! Looking back on it now, they can chuckle and mark it down to just another cattle hauling experience! After spending two show seasons at Bar 15 and working freelance for various breeders during sale season, Cathy took a well needed holiday in the spring of 1984. She went on a six week Contiki camping tour throughout 11 European countries. Returning home, she went to work for Cruikshank Charolais near Olds for the fall show season, and she spent the next spring and summer helping the Penosky family at Happyvale Angus near Stettler. They exhibited 12 head at local summer shows and fairs leading up to the 1985 World Angus Forum held in Edmonton. After the World Forum, Cathy moved back to Olds to work with Cruikshank Charolais on the fall circuit. She stayed working for the Cruikshanks part-time helping with their show and sale cattle for the next two years while she

attended Olds College full-time. She graduated in the spring of 1987 with an Agriculture Business Degree, was named to the Dean’s List, and won the Louise McKinney $3,000 Scholarship for the highest marks in the Ag Business program!Shortly after college graduation, in the summer of 1987, Cathy joined the team at Kilmorlie Farms Inc., near Bowden. There she could still work with cattle, Polled Hereford this time, as well as challenge her new business degree. She spent mornings in the Kilmorlie office as a secretary/bookkeeper keeping cattle records, recording herd health and keeping calving information up to date, and she is definitely credited for bringing the farm into the computer age. In the afternoons, she usually worked outside with the show or sale cattle, and helped out wherever she was needed. As the only female and a versatile member of the team, Cathy was quick to keep the men in line when it came to providing the office with accurate information. She also found time for everything from cutting grass, to painting fences, to decorating the barn for sales, to cooking lunch and washing dishes for the sale crews. Her specialty was still grooming the show cattle, and Kilmorlie realized many show champions during those years. “It was hard work,” Cathy recalls, “but we always had fun, especially at the shows! Drinking champagne from the coveted Tom Lees Memorial trophy after winning 1992 Grand Champion Bull at Agribition was one of the parties to remember!”In the fall of 1987, a group of Alberta Hereford breeders held an elite and decadent sale at the Capri Hotel in Red Deer. Sales staff members were dressed in tuxedos and the cattle were presented as stars. This brought the attention of local media and positive attention to the breed. Kilmorlie Farms consigned a bull calf to the sale, and when a Red Deer Advocate reporter, Sheryl Nixon arrived, she noticed that Cathy was the only female grooming cattle that day. Sheryl followed Cathy back to Kilmorlie and wrote a feature article on her unique career in the December 29, 1987 issue of the newspaper. The article began: “The polished pink fingernails look like they’ve never run through the thick red coat of a Hereford cow, nor tugged at the end of a halter rope to coax along a 1,350-kg bull. The slim and fashionably dressed 26-year-old has been a custom livestock fitter since she finished high school. She’s one of a growing number of bovine beauticians that take cattle from the barnyard pen or pasture into the show and sale ring with style.” They referred to her as a “Bovine Beautician”, and it catapulted Cathy into the media spotlight. Newspapers and radio stations throughout North America began calling and requesting an interview! The media attention triggered something rather unexpected for Cathy. At the time, there was a CBC television program called “On the Road Again” that aired weekly across Canada. It was a show hosted by Wayne Rostad that featured Canadians that have unique and unusual professions. Wayne is one of the most recognized voices and faces on the Canadian landscape, and he and his film crew came to Bowden and filmed a segment featuring Cathy. Once again, they named her the “Bovine Beautician”, and to the delight of other young women breaking into the industry, the program aired Canada-wide in April of 1988.When Kilmorlie Farms Inc. dispersed their cattle and land in October of 1994, Dr. Roger Davis was quick to recognize Cathy’s abilities. After helping with the enormous task of organizing and orchestrating the two-day Kilmorlie dispersal, Cathy hung up her Carhartt overalls and accepted the position as Office Manager for Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants Ltd. and Davis-Rairdan International (DRI), near Crossfield, Alberta. Co-founder of Davis-Rairdan, Dr. Davis grew up in Saskatchewan raising registered Angus cattle and later, while working as a practicing veterinarian, owned Davis Polled Herefords until dispersing in 1989. Davis polled genetics are still recognized worldwide, and

Dr. Davis’ knowledge of the purebred industry, his training as a veterinarian and his interest in genetics, especially embryo transfer and reproduction has been extremely beneficial to the purebred seedstock industry. In Western Canada alone, Davis-Rairdan implants an average of 2,000 beef cattle embryos annually, and to date, they have exported embryos to over 22 countries. For the past 17 years, Cathy has worked tirelessly with Dr. Davis and the Davis-Rairdan transplant team for the benefit of the purebred industry.Cathy rises about 5:00 a.m. (must be an old habit from the show road) and arrives at Davis-Rairdan around 7:00 a.m. A half hour drive from Bowden to Crossfield, Cathy is often on the QEII highway with the 18-wheel truckers before the snow ploughs have had a chance to clear the roads. The time she arrives back home depends on the day’s workload. Bookkeeping at Davis-Rairdan is just one of Cathy’s responsibilities. She also co-ordinates appointments between the flushing team and the breeders, both on farm or at the transplant centre. She contacts the breeders and provides them with the information necessary when preparing a cow to be flushed. If the cow is to be flushed at the transplant centre, she ensures the semen to breed her is released and available at the proper time. When it comes to shipping embryos worldwide, just the paper work alone can be daunting. Every country has its own government protocol (ever changing) that has to be followed to the letter, not to mention the CFIA regulations and Health papers required to ship embryos to each various country. Then there are the airline regulations and schedules to follow and the paper trail that involves. “It can be stressful to ensure the embryos arrive at their destination on time and without delay,” Cathy tells me, “but when all goes well, and say a breeder in Denmark sends you pictures of his resulting calves, it’s a great feeling to have satisfied clients.”Cathy’s first exposure to a computer was as a student at Olds College. Long before the internet arrived, one of her projects was to collect information on the College Hereford cowherd and enter the data, such as pedigrees and breeding information, into a very antiquated computer program. Her second exposure to computers was when she transferred the Kilmorlie Farms bookkeeping onto a computer, but the computerized record-keeping programs for purebred herds left a lot to be desired back then. Davis-Rairdan also did their bookkeeping on a computer and when Cathy arrived, they had started to develop a reliable embryo inventory program. Since then, technology has greatly improved, and Cathy has embraced it and continues to improve her skills. She maintains the Davis-Rairdan website and without the internet, easily connecting with clients and colleagues across Canada and worldwide wouldn’t be possible. When Cathy got tired of waiting for computer technicians to show up, not to mention the enormous fees they charged, she took it upon herself to enrol in some troubleshooting and repair courses. Now she is the go-to-girl at Davis-Rairdan, not to mention helping a few of her friends! Michelle, Cathy’s younger sister, graduated High School in Barrhead and also made her mark in the beef industry as a custom cattle fitter. Michelle (PeeWee) worked with Kilmorlie Farms for four years, as well as for several other Canadian and U.S. breeders. For those readers that knew Michelle, she now lives in Edmonton, Alberta with her husband, Tim Craplewe and their 12 year old daughter, Kaylee. Cathy and Michelle’s father, Terry, and his wife Lois, live in St. Albert, Alberta. Together they have one married son, Scott, who lives with his family in Reno, Nevada. Terry and Lois own and operate a “Hot Shot” service called, T. L. Wood Transport, and Michelle is the Office Manager. Idris, Cathy and Michelle’s mother, is now retired from the Alberta Government Department of Agriculture in Barrhead and resides in Leduc, Alberta. She keeps busy

working part-time in a clothing boutique. While working at Kilmorlie Farms as co-workers, Cathy met her husband and best friend Alan Penny. Now partners for almost 20 years, they share two married daughters and four grandchildren. Eldest daughter, Danielle, and Travis Thorburn have two children, Mannix and Cedar, and youngest daughter, Andria, and Jeff Sahli have two sons, Ashton and Carter. Cathy and Alan spend a lot of early Saturday mornings as cheering grandparents at hockey or lacrosse games!Cathy takes her sports as seriously as she takes her work. She says her father taught her that if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right, and that’s exactly what she does. Living along the first fairway of the Bowden Golf Course, Cathy’s present goal is to perfect her golf game to a single digit handicap, and I don’t doubt that it will happen soon! During golf season, she rushes home from work to hit the links for 9 holes before dark. On the weekends she beats the crowds at 6:00 a.m. for a 9 hole practice round, often before meeting friends for 18 in the afternoon. Cathy has won numerous ladies and mixed tournaments in Central Alberta including the Bowden Club Championship eight times and the Bowden Ladies Open tournament for the last five years running. She can boast two hole-in-ones, the first celebrated in Ontario and the second in Alberta, and scoring two eagles in 2010 has reinforced her enthusiasm. While representing Davis-Rairdan as sponsors of the T Bar Invitational last summer, Cathy and Alan were warming-up with a practice round at the Dakota Dunes Golf Links near Saskatoon when Cathy scored an eagle on the 302 yard, #14 hole. In the tournament the next day, her self-confidence was still evident when she set up her drive to cut the corner over the trees on the dog-legged left, par 4, #13. Her ball landed next to the green allowing her team to score a birdie and finish second in a tournament that I must mention, is dominated by male competitors.Alberta winters can get long for golfers, so Cathy and Alan plan an annual get-a-way that always includes golf. They have travelled to the U.S. and the Dominican Republic, but their favourite winter destination in recent years has been Ixtapa, Mexico, for two weeks of golf and relaxation. Cathy’s favourite winter sport is clogging, because it involves good music, good exercise and fun with friends. Both Cathy and Alan are part of a small group of community minded people in Bowden that saw the Bowden Golf Course wasn’t living up to its potential. The group set out to revamp the course and make it more profitable and attractive to new members. They raised money and drew plans that included a new clubhouse, grass greens and improved fairways. It’s now a course that Bowden is proud to promote. Cathy has served as the Secretary or the Treasurer of the club for the past several years and has helped to promote and organize ladies night golf and the annual Bowden Ladies Open golf tournament for several years. She was also one of the major organizers of the Scott Rairdan Foundation Golf Tournament that was held at the Carstairs Golf Club for 11 years.Spring has arrived in Alberta, and you can bet that Cathy will be one of the first to check out the newest varieties of flowers at the greenhouses. She loves spending time in her gardens and nurturing the seedlings to their full potential. A hobby she shares with her step-mother, Lois, Cathy raises everything from Chocolate tomatoes to the latest Lime Bi-color petunias! Cathy and Alan enjoy entertaining and cooking together, and of course beef is the first selection, but Cathy’s specialty is chocolate desserts. As with the flowers and vegetables, she’s always on the lookout for a new recipe to try.

Cathy says she has learned something from everyone she has worked with, but she considers her mother to be one of the most influential people in her life. “She gave me her work ethic and taught me honesty and loyalty,” Cathy says. “I think my strengths are that I can handle a heavy workload and stay organized at the same time. I have a hard time understanding people that don’t put their best foot forward and show passion for whatever they are doing.” Cathy has been a willing mentor to any young person anxious to learn. She has conducted fitting and showing demonstrations for junior cattle enthusiasts of several breeds, and she acted as an Adult Advisor for the 1996 Junior Hereford Bonanza held in Calgary, Alberta. She has judged numerous 4-H showmanship and grooming competitions, and she will always be a cheerleader for the junior associations in Canada. In 1996, Cathy was also a member of a team of women that judged the Cinderella Classic held in Saskatoon.Still proud to be a part of the Canadian Beef Industry, Cathy can’t think of anything she would have done differently. She values her family, and the friends and acquaintances she has made worldwide; it’s mostly the people that have kept her enthusiastic! “I don’t’ have many words of wisdom,” she tells me, “but love what you are doing is the most important advice I can give. You have to be able to make a living at it, but loving what you do every day is the most important step to happiness; and never pass-up the opportunity to learn something new! I like to eat well, stay healthy and enjoy time with friends!”

“If you never get off the farm you are never going to learn anything!” Wise words in my opinion. A few years ago I shared with a friend how much I enjoyed going to bull sales to see what the neighbours are offering for sale, and what the customers are looking for. That is when he shared his wisdom and that phrase with me and I have not forgotten it.
In the vet business we are mandated to record and report a number of hours of what we call continuing education each year. This is so we stay current on the latest and greatest that is coming our way. We can collect these hours by completing online courses and the like, but the most common route is to attend conferences. The typical conference is a 3 to 4 day event offering lectures with mass appeal as well as a number of smaller, concurrent sessions tailored to say cattle or cat/ dog vets. Coffee breaks, meals and evening social events are put in the mix to allow us to chat with industry representatives and our friends. Sure, conferences take time away from our everyday lives and can be very expensive, especially, when the costs of travel and lodging are factored in; however, I believe these costs can be easily offset by, if nothing else, the renewed enthusiasm we bring back to our practices. Enthusiasm is the key to enhancing productivity and it is contagious. Learning new things online or by reading books just doesn’t have quite the same kick as getting out there with your colleagues.
Recently, I had the opportunity to travel with a number of progressive beef producers on a Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture sponsored trip to the Dakotas and Nebraska. It was a tremendous learning experience! Those that participated came away with several new ideas. Many of us were intrigued by the Heartland Cattle Company, an outfit whose primary focus is custom heifer development. They have yard capacity for up to 4000 head, can accommodate pen groups ranging between 60 and 120 head and have enough demand to warrant an expansion. Heifers are fed a balanced, forage-based ration to target an appropriate weight at breeding for their frame. Stringent culling criteria are utilized to ensure that a uniform group of pregnant heifers are returned to the producer following a very busy breeding season utilizing estrous synchronization with visible heat detection. No gomer bulls or timed insemination just cowboys and cowgirls with a good eye! During a typical day at the height of the breeding season staff may inseminate up to 250 heifers. Producers can select their own sires or work with the Heartland staff to pick out high accuracy EPD sires for a number of economically important traits. Their feeding/ breeding/ heifer safe-in-calf program requires 180 days at a very appealing per heifer cost that is adjusted with the cost of feed. By utilizing Heartland’s resources producers can eliminate the need for maintaining heifer bulls and focus their attention on managing the cow herd. In fact, Heartland can boast that their heifers have

an 8% higher rebreed rate after their first calf then their home-raised counterparts. Now there is a tangible for valuing good heifer rearing!
Another highlight for me was to hear about recent discoveries in DNA technology at the USDA Meat Animal Research Center, Clay Center, NE. Over the next few years the capability and reliability of these tests will improve and it is very exciting to think of how this technology can be combined with EPDs to strengthen our breeding programs.
For most cattle producers having the opportunity to see and touch practical solutions for common problems is priceless. Someday I hope to build a new cart to hold my liquid nitrogen tanks, AI guns and thawing unit based on an innovative cart I saw. I also got a great idea about mounting a metal kick post in the chute which could be released from its vertical holding position by simply pulling a rope several feet behind the cow.
Many hours were spent between stops riding on a bus so there was ample time for visiting. For an academic veterinarian/ farmer who likes to chat, the opportunity to learn from neighbouring cattle producers proved to be a rewarding way to pass the time. I got a real education on forage varieties, cattle watering systems, fencing, and farm equipment; and learned about some first class breeding operations located pretty close to home. Maybe they don’t have my breed, but I can certainly pass on what I know to our clients at the vet clinic looking for the best for their herds. I realized that we university types need to get
out and mix with grass roots producers more so that what we are learning in the laboratory gets passed down to the people who need the information. I also learned a slightly different use for the word “tuition”. You see I always thought that was the money paid for an education from an institute of higher learning; however, tuition can also be the money lost attending the “School of Hard Knocks”. Fortunately, “Hard Knocks” offers scholarships to those willing to learn from the mistakes of others. Make it part of your business plan to get off the farm or ranch regularly… it will be worth every penny!

By Chris Poley
Attitude. A person’s view of life and business is totally influenced by it and we have seen a different attitude this summer while out on our travels. This new positive attitude in the cattle business has totally changed business plans of many operations, too! All across the country attitude is good in the cattle business; prices are strong and demand is high. Last week I read a report on 985 pound steers bringing $1.1975. Mother Nature has definitely tested people to the max in several areas, but with $1180.00 steers, people are eager to get past these challenges and stay in the beef business.
The good news for the majority of producers this year is that there is an excess of low cost forage. Pastures are phenomenal, with many producers expecting to extend the normal grazing season and the hay crops… wow! I had a call from one of our clients in the south who had seen lots of years with only one bale per acre; they consider normal to be between one and a half and two bales. This year they are getting five bales per acre. For any of you thinking you are going to make money selling surplus hay, sorry … it’s not going to happen. The only way to capitalize on this feed surplus is to increase your cow inventory and this will be the fall to do it, as bred cow prices have not yet risen to reflect higher calf prices and long term earning potential of a young female.
Many people ask us, how long higher prices will last. I truly believe we are entering a new area where traditional cycles will not apply, world cow numbers are down and we continue to see a large number of cows going to slaughter. It is actually hard to believe the number of cows coming to town this summer, even with the great pasture conditions. Maybe the last several years have made producers better managers and so they are very eager to market cows that are not contributing to quicker profits, while they still have good salvage value. It will take
several generations of cows to see significant growth in cow numbers and in the mean time, another generation of consumers will be after their share.
I have written of this previously, but this statistic remains in my head and it’s that analysts believe the world’s farmers will have to increase food production by seventy percent in the next forty years… can we meet this demand? I don’t know the answer but I do know that there are two things we can’t live without; food and fresh water, which are going to become more and more important. Political focus will shift more to agriculture and all of this is good news to you, the primary producer.
On another note, we just finished several 4-H regional shows in our area and it was great to see a better quality of steer across the board, not all great show steers, but thicker and deeper, well managed animals. The buyers that came to support 4-H members were extremely aggressive and the involvement of all communities was incredible. Steer buyers paid hefty premiums showing their support to the future of the agriculture industry; take note of who supported your industry and next time you are in town, support theirs!

One of the “feel good” aspects of the purebred industry occurs annually at the National Junior shows which are rotated throughout the country each year, usually in the latter part of July. For most of the members of their breed, they do not see this “feel good” part of the industry, simply because they don’t attend unless their children or grandchildren are involved or it is hosted in their home town.
Over the period of two or three activity filled days, the future leaders of the breed compete in a variety of categories from public speaking, oral judging, marketing; both as a team and individually, various advertising competitions, showmanship and grooming.
The final day is comprised of the spectator part of the event, with the conformation classes of the livestock and winds up the week’s festivities with an awards banquet and with some breeds, a dance that follows. Although exhibiting the champion female is a major accomplishment, most important are the junior, intermediate and senior aggregate winners who have proven that they can multi-task at a competitive level.
The “feel good” phenomenon of these events is the execution of the show. Since the age range of the participants is six through twenty-one, it is always a challenge to have everyone involved. With the exception of the adult supervisors, the event is run by the juniors, beginning with the planning and acquisition of funding to the execution of the show. The fun and comradeship abounds throughout the event and at least one or two wash rack water fights will erupt. But the phenomenon to me is the banquet. Throughout the day of the show, there is a sense of competitiveness as they prepare their cattle to compete for the championship title. Immediately after the show, there is a sense of urgency to clean up equipment, do chores and get back to the room.
A mere hour or so later, these same sweaty kids that toiled throughout the day showing their heifers immerge at the banquet. These same young men who sprayed the girls in the wash rack appear in shirt and matching tie, polished boots and groomed to their personal best. Those chatty girls arrive as young ladies dressed to the nines, many with strapless gowns, heels, makeup and every strand of hair in place. The ceremonies conducted by the juniors are eloquent, as the council (junior board) announce the winners, thank the sponsors and relate future plans. The banquet has a “special air” about it …whether it
Today’s Angus Advantage Summer 2011 76
is their accomplishments, a pride to be recognized as part of a great breed or the fellowship between all ages; that air lingers until the last table is folded and stored. There is nothing greater in this world than the smile of a child.
Lessons can be learned from these young soon-to-be adults, yet in many cases, adult director attendance is sparse; although they would drive six hours to attend a sale. Now that the woes of the past decade are behind us and the future of the beef industry has never looked better, it might be the time to put a little glamour back into the seedstock industry. I realize that everyone has a little John Wayne in them, but breeders of Angus seedstock are livestock entrepreneurs, responsible for producing the best red meat product in the world. A counterpart of mine told me many years ago that the cheapest part of customer service and marketing is food, refreshments and fellowship.
While on the junior note, the T Bar Invitational was another successful event with our Angus juniors benefiting from it by over $10,000.00. Congratulations and thanks are in order to all the sponsors and participants who believe in supporting the future of the breed and industry. On a different note, it is hard to believe that a breeder would carp the organizers of this successful event. (Maybe they should take a lesson from the juniors!)
This time of year is a great time to contact your customers and see how the bulls are working or pay them a visit, as they are as proud of their herds as you are of yours. With a renewed “bull market” in the industry, we will see several new participants enter the fold… try to make sure that they know you are in the business.
