Today your maths lesson will be completed online. There are three different scenarios with problems and questions that need answering. Write down your answers for each question on a piece of paper and then complete the quiz towards the end of the lesson. You may either complete the tasks on your own or with a partner. Good luck!

Dear students,
The Melbourne Zoo would like to request your help. The state government has offered the Zoo a $10 million ($10,000,000) grant to extend ourElephant enclosure to make room for our new baby Elephant – Mali. Underno circumstances can we spend more than $10 million. An architect has designed three different enclosure spaces for us to choose from. And the builders have told us that it costs $15,000 per square metre to clear, build, and landscape a new enclosure. Using your knowledge of area, measurement, and money calculations – look at the three different designs to work out their area and subsequent building costs to then help us to choose the largest design that can be built for under $10 million. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Scenario two – School garden
Our school is having a working bee this weekend to build three raised garden beds to be used for our new kitchen garden program. We would like you to work out the quantity of materials we will need to order and how much it will cost. The three different materials we need are timber sleepers, garden soil, and mulch.Each garden bed will have the internal dimensions of 2m wide, 4.6m long, and 0.9m high.

The three raised garden beds are being built with timber sleepers. The timber sleepers come in 4.8m lengths but can be cut to smaller sizes if needed. You cannot however have any joints of different pieces of timber other than on the corners of the garden beds. The garden supply costs for each Timber sleeper including delivery is: $35 eachTimber sleeper measurements (4.8m long and 0.3m high)

To finish the garden beds off and to protect them from drying out, a layer of 5cm (0.05m) thick Mulch is being applied to the top of the garden beds. The mulch is also available in 0.25 cubic metre intervals and costs - $50 per cubic metre (including delivery).

The National Gallery of Victoria has just discovered that a valuable piece of Art is missing from their storeroom. Fortunately the Art piecehas a satellite tracking device on the inside of the frame. Data from the tracking device tells us that the artwork started moving from the storeroom exactly 5 hours ago. It also shows that it has travelled 400km in that time without stopping. The National Gallery needs your help to catch the thief and return the valuable artwork.

SCENARIO 3: ART THEFT UPDATE 1
Security guards have just checked the video footage from the gallery and have discovered a Black 1998 Holden Commodore was seen speeding from the Gallery at the same time that the Artwork went missing. Police tell us that the maximum distance this make of car can travel before needing to re-fuel is 620km.
Question 17) What is the maximum amount of distance the car can still travel for before needing to stop for fuel?Question 18) How long would it take for the car to travel that maximum distance if it maintains its average speed?

Using the tracking device, we know that there are just six towns within 350km of the current position of the artwork – Aleana 82km, Baranga 115km, Coolara 180km, Sanreema 211km, Orest 278km, and Winella 316km. Police are preparing to position themselves in the appropriate town/s in-case the offenders try to stop for petrol.
