AROONA HOUSE REPORT

In what Australian state is the town of Aroona?Queensland! The town of Aroona is situated on the Sunshine Coast. It has a population of around 3,500 people and the name ‘Aroona’ stems from an Indigenous word meaning ‘place of refreshment; or ‘place of running water’.

When was the last time Aroona won the House Shield?2008 was the year – yes, it was a while ago but believe it or not, we won that shield four years running. We have recently recognised the fact that Aroona is a house of many, many talents and we like to think of ourselves as ‘all-rounders’. Not to worry – our 2017 leadership group have their eyes firmly set on making the ultimate come back!

What rating did students in Aroona House give Mr Vanderbom’s moustache during Movember (out of 10)? 9/10 – it was very impressive, yet difficult to take him (or himself!) seriously for those four weeks.

What house event did Aroona win in 2016?The Middle School Swimming Carnival! This was our first win of any kind for quite a while – it sure felt good to hold that gleaming wooden shield. Thank you to our fantastic Middle

School students who swam exceptionally well on the day and also joined in across a range of novelty events.

What sport did Mrs Felgate-Pearce represent South Australia in?Hockey! Mrs F-P played for the Adelaide Hockey Club and her illustrious career spanned 25 years. Her highest achievement was competing at Nationals, representing the state. She played half-back and her best hockey tip would be to ‘stay down!’ You’ll have to ask her what that means.

How many species of succulents does Mr Blesing have at home?Over 100. Not over 100 plants… over 100 species of succulent plants! Mr Blesing and his wife have a love for succulents. He also has some pretty interesting stories as to how he got his hands on a few of them!

How many Aroona Home Group Teachers were there in 2016?Nineteen. Nineteen wonderful, caring, generous, compassionate individuals looked after the beautiful students in Aroona each day. Our House would be nothing without these hard-working people who really do go above and beyond for the students. We say a huge thank you to them for all that they do, and for all that they are.

What have been Aroona’s biggest achievements in 2016?• We didn’t come last in any major house

events. Watch out for us in 2017! We are coming after you Naturi!

• We managed to get the highest number of positive acknowledgment slips – this tells us that our students are awesome… but we already knew that!

• We managed to set a record for the

number of laps completed in the House Lap event on Athletics Day in 2016. Thank you to Brad Hilton, Cooper Hough and Damon Anning and Thalia Cresp who most likely contributed to this record based on the results from Summit to School!

• Daniel Oertel and Zane Olenich packed away more chairs between them, than the rest of Aroona put together!

This year also marks the end of the road in Aroona House leadership for us. We’ve been in this job, building relationships and community, helping to restore relationships when things go badly and in general, helping blue people get more involved in College life for a combined total of 15 years. We’d like to thank the students, staff, parents and friends, both past and present for your support, help, friendliness and willingness to join us a Aroonians for this adventure.

Until next time (whenever that is!).

Miss Kayla Chumbley and Mr Tim Vanderbom

BATTUNGAHOUSE REPORT

We have been thrilled, once again, to work with a group of motivated, passionate and collegial student House Leaders. Our sincerest thanks go to Senior School House Leaders: Erika Mullins, Jake Pollard, Cooper Stoeckel and Rhiannon West, and Middle School House Leaders: Thomas Glover, Poppy Kentish, Henry Kidman and Lara Mullins, for their outstanding dedication, leadership and creativity.

Battunga DayFollowing the introduction of Friendly Frogs in 2015, the delicious show of gratitude and friendship reached its zenith in 2016. Students wrote notes for their friends and we delivered almost 1000 frogs across the College over the week. And that was just the beginning!

Battunga’s traditional Buddy Buds were also a hit – we dispensed almost 100 roses around the College, accompanying words of encouragement and appreciation from very thoughtful friends. Finally, our annual ‘date with a mate’ also drew a crowd and helped us to raise money and awareness of the work of Australian Lutheran World Service in many parts of the world.

Battunga EventsWe competed strongly in the Middle School Swimming Carnival early in the year to get

the point-counting year off to a fast start. Well done to all our participants and supporters!

The Interhouse Athletics Carnival proved to be another phenomenal day for Battunga and the College. We were organised and enthusiastic and worked as a team but we weren’t Naturi! Another (close) second place finish was a very impressive result for all the hard work and commitment demonstrated by Battungarians on the day.

Due to inclement weather, the Summit to School bike race was called off, stripping Battunga of the chance to collect points in the event in which we traditionally excel. We maintained pleasing levels of participation but were outscored by the other houses on the day.

After another hard-fought year, we finished second in the battle for the House Shield. Congratulations to Naturi for their victory and thanks to Moorak and Aroona for their positive participation in 2016.

Battunga House meetingsHouse meetings this year were welcoming, informative and lots of fun! A warm welcome and some danceable music greeted students as they arrived for Battunga House meetings throughout the year. We played games with titles like ‘ice-cream face’, ‘jelly bean slam dunk’, ‘huddle’, ‘drink bottle flip’ and the Easter-themed ‘bunny bounce’. We also enjoyed powerful and insightful devotions on a range of topics including resilience, purpose and individuality.

Battunga (good)byesIt is with some sadness that we finish our time as Battunga House Leaders at the end of 2016. We have cherished the time (three years and five years respectively) leading this incredible House.

We have learned so much from the students and enjoyed so many good times. We finally, after 19 years, hoisted the House Shield, and then went back-to-back!

We have loved working together and feel very privileged to be a small part of the legacy of Cornerstone’s greenest and greatest House.

God’s blessings to all.

Mrs Kristyn Wheeler and Mr Daniel Wood

MOORAKHOUSE REPORT

House LeadersThe 2016 Moorak House Leader team was a winner. It is always sad to see them finish at the end of each year and this group was no exception. The energy and commitment was admirable and has built a strong Moorak spirit. Each week the House Leaders met at lunch, shared stories and joys, and then planned the next week’s events. Weekly House meetings were well prepared and presented most professionally.

Commando House ThemeThis year our house theme was ‘Commando’. We introduced our Commando mascot the week of Athletics day. The aim of this theme was to build some serious but enthusiastic participation during House games. Each week we had a different game which related to our Commando, whether is was Tug-of-War or Guess the Pokémon, our Moorakians were gaining mental and physical training. In the build up to a big event like Summit to School or Athletics day, Commando was out and training our Moorakians for the best possible success. We found this idea successful because it would build excitement for any major events. The winner of the Home Group House Shield this year was Moorak 5. Congratulations to these students and their Home Group Teachers!

Moorak Focus WeekThis year’s Moorak Fundraiser was based

on our theme of Commando. It began with Home Groups building their own obstacle course out of a selection of items which they purchased. This represented all the obstacles that people in developing countries face. The various items, including the Ms Butler fish and Ms Doherty on fire, proved very popular with Home Groups and we were amazed with the creative courses which were built. The winning Home Group had their course built in Inbarendi. This led to a huge amount of fun and laughter as students were able to attempt to complete the course in one shape! Also at the gym, Mr Ottens showed the students what the water was like in some of the developing countries. At the end of the week we also sold hot doughnuts. All of the proceeds went to Habitat for Humanity to assist with building houses in Cambodia.

Weiss TimeThis year, we incorporated a new house activity called ‘Weiss Time’, where Mr Weiss would interview people who have gone above and beyond in the Moorak house. This segment not only provided a comical feature to our house meetings, but it was also extremely educational, as the students were provided with information about a number of different topics. We were also fortunate enough to have Mr Weiss deliver a wonderful presentation about his time that he spent in Djibouti, which had a strong impact on the Moorak house. Farewell and Thank youMoorak farewelled Ms Jacinta Smart, who has served for three years as Moorak House Leader and Mr Andrew Ottens who served Moorak for seven years. Their professionalism, commitment, dedication and enthusiasm in this role have been outstanding. Both Jacinta and Andrew have been wonderful mentors to Home Group Teachers and House Leaders and their caring concerns and dealings with students and their families was both caring

and highly effective. They had a special passion for pastoral care and this was evident in the wonderful and energetic way they inspired and nurtured leadership in the students. With their God given talents, they always strove to engage the Moorak House in supporting those in need and will be sadly missed. We wish them both all the best in their continued role as classroom teachers at the College and thank them for their outstanding contribution to our community.

Finally we would like to thank Mrs Deanne Bovingdon, Mr Eric McDonald and Mr Patrick Swanson for their care and support of Moorak.

We wish all our Moorak staff, students and their families a relaxing holiday break and we look forward to working together in 2017.

NATURIHOUSE REPORT

House MeetingsThe 2016 Naturi House meetings were organised, interactive and fulfilled Naturian’s with their need for motivation and determination to win the House Shield. Before the House meetings our senior and middle school house leaders met to organise and clarify the running of House. Most House meetings consisted of a warm and energetic welcome, a devotion prepared by Home Groups or leaders, a fun segment or game to encourage Middle and Senior school Home Groups to interact, and concluded with some housekeeping by the staff House leaders, Mr Day and Mrs Bradley.

The Naturi CupTo develop intra-house competition we had weekly activities that went towards the ‘Naturi Cup’ which was organised by Zac Sauerwald. The winning Home Group this year was Naturi 1 Middle who received a pancake breakfast cooked for them by the leaders as a reward. Each week “Keeping Up With The Naturian’s” was a fun item run in House meetings by Holly Jenkin and Lea P, two of our Middle School House Leaders. Holly and Lea selected a Home Group teacher and brainstormed applicable questions to enquire of them, engaging and informing the Naturi House more about their devoted teachers.

A devotion roster was made at the beginning of each term, ensuring that all Home Groups were included and also some teachers and House Leaders participated. The Naturi House definitely bonded as the year progressed, and it was great to see so much support in all elements of our House meetings.

Naturi Focus WeekThis year’s Naturi Focus Week, at the end of Term 1, had a construction theme to raise awareness about the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) and their efforts to build utilities in Cambodia. Throughout the week there were construction themed activities like a “Bob the Builder” colouring in competition, which was won by the creative Moorak 4 Middle Home Group, a clean joke competition won by Battunga 4 Middle and a lolly jar guessing competition won by Battunga 4 Senior. On the last day, an amazing amount of giving and participation with a construction themed, non-uniform day and a variety of food sold in the courtyard. Thanks to everyone’s efforts we were able to raise enough money for about 17 latrines or 16 water filters to be built in underprivileged communities in Cambodia. It was absolutely wonderful to see our community taking part in helping others in need. It’s clear that Cornerstone is built on a foundation of generosity.

2016 House Shield WinnersAt the beginning of the year the Naturi House Leaders came together and aimed to have a fun year and hopefully gain success along the way. Our year started off with the Naturi Middle School swimmers finishing second in the Middle School Swimming Carnival which was soon followed by a big high when we won Athletics Day in Term 1, something we dreamed to achieve. The strong participation and encouragement by Naturians during that day is what got us over the line and from there we continued to rise to the occasion and finish

on top. Despite the weather, Summit to School came next in which we finished in first place again, winning the Smelly Sandshoe Trophy. With this win, consistent academic results and fantastic participation in extra-curricular activities throughout the year by Naturians we were successful in taking out the coveted 2016 House Shield. At the start of the year we only imagined that we could win the House Shield but it just goes to show that if you work hard as a team, put in the effort and still have fun while doing so, you will achieve great results. At the end of the day Naturi came together as a family and displayed what it really means to be a House.

A big thank-you and congratulations to all Naturians for your efforts throughout the year!
