The Gospel of Luke tells us that as Jesus was passing through the city of Jer- icho, Zacchaeus was anxious to see Je- sus. He climbed up a sycamore tree to get a better look, and to his surprise, it was not just Zacchaeus who was seeking Je- sus but actually Jesus who was seeking Zacchaeus! Fr. Freddie’s Installation Mass And Reception: On Saturday, Nov. 16th, at the 5:30 Vigil Mass, Fr. Freddie Chua will be officially installed as Pastor of Annunciation Church. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop David O’Connell of the San Gabriel Pastoral Region. This is meant to be a parish-wide celebration, so all are invited to attend this special Mass, as well as the recep-tion in the Parish Hall that will follow. If you would like to volunteer to help with the set-up, the reception itself, or clean-up, please call Christine Hunt in the Parish Of-fice at (626) 447-6202. We will be setting up on Saturday morning (tables/ chairs, tablecloths). We will be bringing in food for the reception, so clean up will be mini-mal, but all offers of assistance will be gratefully accepted!

Pastoral Council Hosting Friendship Sunday This Weekend: Our Pastoral Council members invite you and your family to enjoy coffee and pas-tries in the Rectory Patio following all Sunday Masses.

Change During The Prayers Of The Faithful: Have you noticed that, for the past few weeks, the Lector has invited us to offer our personal petitions in silence only? We have eliminated the phrase “out loud” in order to allow each individual to fully focus on offering their personal petitions to God, minus the potential distraction of other voices. This prayerful silence gives us the opportunity to put ourselves in God’s presence and to speak directly to Him of our need for His divine assistance. Thank you for honoring this change.

Auditions To Be Held: Auditions for “That Wonderful Night”, the pageant presented at the 4:00 p.m. Christ-mas Eve Family Mass, will be held in the Music Room on Saturday, Nov. 16th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Music Room (Room B-2) Children of Annunciation Par-ish are invited to audition—there are Speaking and Non-Speaking parts available. Teenage and adult assistance is also needed backstage. We will have approxi-mately 7 rehearsals. Please call or text Frances Luna at (626) 327-6147.

Thanksgiving Dinner For The Homeless: Our Christian Service Center will once again host a Thanksgiving Feast for the homeless and less fortunate families in our community on Saturday, Nov. 23rd, in our Parish Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. You can help by donating food items (turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, water, rolls, salad or dessert), or assist with set up, serving, or cleanup. Please contact Ruth Estrada at (626) 201-8528 to volunteer.

Christian Service Center: This year in November we will be providing Thanksgiving funds for 165 families with residences, 10 homeless families and 98 homeless single adults. We are ask-ing for your support again to assure adequate funding to provide for our neighbors in need. Please make your donation by using the special green envelopes included in your monthly envelope package, or the blue envelopes in the pews, being sure to check the box next to “Christian Service Center”. Thank you very much!

Parish Prayer Chain: The ministry of the prayer chain is to lift up to Our Lord the specific requests and concerns of our parishioners and friends. To request a prayer for someone, or to become a Prayer Warrior, please call Marie Nimmrich at (626) 448-3304, or e-mail her at: [email protected]. All requests are kept confidential within the prayer network.

Bishop Amat High School Annual Fundraising Gala: Bishop Amat Memorial High School will host their 2019 Extravaganza, ”A Magical Moroccan Evening” Dinner and Dance on Saturday, Nov. 16th from 5:00 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $75.00 per person. This event includes live and silent auc-tions for vacation condos, MLB, NBA and college sporting tickets, concerts, auto-graphed memorabilia, jewelry, high-end baskets and much more! Raffle tickets are available at a cost of $20.00 per ticket at the school for a Romantic Hawaiian Get-away. For more information, please visit: www.bishopamat.org.

Did You Know? As part of our long-standing commitment to provide pastoral care and to sup-port the healing process for victim-survivors, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles--along with the Diocese of Fresno, the Diocese of Orange, Diocese of Sac-ramento, Diocese of San Bernardino, and Diocese of San Diego--is partici-pating in the new Independent Compensation Program for Victim-Survivors of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Priests (ICP). The ICP is administered inde-pendently of the Church by Kenneth Feinberg and Camille Biros, widely rec-ognized as premier dispute resolution administrators in the country. The program is now accepting registrations from any person who has been sexu-ally abused as a minor by diocesan priests of the participating dioceses, no matter when that abuse might have occurred. Funding for the program in our Archdiocese will come from self-insured reserves, monies set aside for this purpose. We pray that this new program might provide another avenue toward healing and hope. 2 nd Reading Reflection ~ 2 Thessalonians 1:11-2:2 ~

Written twenty years or so after Christ’s death, both the first and sec-ond letters to the Thessalonians are rich with encouragement for the local church which Paul had founded. This little church seems to have been blessed with God’s favor since it flourished, even in the absence of the apostolic presence of Paul. His praise and direction aims largely at making slight corrections in teaching and in seeing that their faith is properly expressed. In this reading, one of Paul’s concerns is the misun-derstanding that some seem to have gained from possibly fabricated re-ports that “the day of the Lord” had arrived. That phrase was used to refer to the Second Coming of Jesus.

Paul assures the faithful that the day hasn’t arrived and goes on to remind readers of what he told them while he was with them about the events which must transpire before Christ’s return. It’s worth noting that nothing Paul says suggests that the events surround the coming of the “lawless man,” who’s to precede the Second Coming, are imminent at the time of his writing. From what Paul tells us here, the common assertion that the early Christians believed that Jesus was to return at any moment could be questioned.

G ospel Reflection ~ Luke 19:1-10 ~

This week Jesus again addresses himself to a covenant outsider, Zac-chaeus, a tax collector in Jericho.

Zacchaeus was a rich man, the chief tax collector in a wealthy region. Chief tax collectors often employed tax collecting agents to do the dirty work of extortion of the local people in collaboration with the Roman au-thorities, which made these men out-casts in Jewish society. Zacchaeus’ small stature would’ve made it a ne-cessity to employ others to handle the rough stuff, which likely made him all the more hated by the local populace.

When those who observed that Je-sus had allowed himself to be invited to the house of a sinner began to murmur, Zacchaeus doesn’t dispute what they assert about him, but, by repenting, instantly turns himself into a righteous “descendant of Abra-ham,” as Jesus calls him. Zacchaeus wouldn’t have been required by the Mosaic Law to make a fourfold resti-tution for the evil he had done, still less to give half his wealth to the poor. He demonstrates for us that in the new regime which Jesus estab-lishes as the kingdom of God, cove-nant outsiders such as Zacchaeus can, in an instant, become “descendants of Abraham.”

D igging Deeper for iscussion

FORMED members can watch this week’s short “Opening the Word” VIDEO at:

AnnunciationChurch.FORMED.org

With friends or family, reflect on the following questions:

Imagine that Jesus showed up and asked to visit your house. How would you respond? Why might we be hesitant to welcome Jesus to our homes?

In what ways is Zacchaeus’ life changed as a result of his encoun-ter with Jesus?

P rayer: Building on today’s Gos-pel reading, imagine Jesus has

come to visit your town. But instead of going to the house of your parish priest or even the most generous, kind, faithful members of your com-munity, he goes straight to the home of the person you dislike the most. How would that make you feel? Would you rejoice that Jesus was calling this perhaps lost soul into a relationship? Or would you be like the people in Zacchaeus’ time—grumbling and complaining, wonder-ing why on earth Jesus would want anything to do with that person? Now imagine that as Jesus gets ready to enter that person’s house, he turns to you. What would you say to Jesus before he entered that house?

R esolution: Think of the person in your life that you most strug-

gle with for whatever reason. Ask Jesus to visit that person, to show his love to him or her in a new way. Ask him how you can be a better friend, neighbor, etc., to that person. Perhaps ask Jesus how you can show his love to him or her?

sàng đáp trả, dám can đảm sám hối
