Roger Admiral / Howard Bashaw celebrate new CD release with fundraiser at CMC BC

The CD release party for Roger Admiral and Howard Bashaw’s new Centrediscs disc, 15 for Piano was held on Wednesday, May 13 at Pyatt Hall, VSO School of Music. This concert

was a fundraising event presented by CMC BC. Both ‘15 for Piano’ and ‘Form Archimage’ rank among the relatively few major and

challenging Canadian works for contemporary piano. Showcasing performer Roger Admiral and composer Howard Bashaw, the pendulum of

extremes swings far and wide within the eclectic collection of movements included on this CD.Vivid, disparate inspirations and imaginings emerge in contrasting musical expressions that

range from incidental, technical strategies, to various programmatic reflections on conceptual, visual and mythological impressions, and to longer narratives based on more complex sub-structures of compounding patterns and processes. And while some movements take the performer to the volatile, precarious edges of endurance and roaring virtuosity, others counter quietly within atmospheric pastels of fleeting tranquility and shadowy murmurings.

An open letter to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra

In the newsletter of the Canadian Music Centre Prairie Region, a passage from your current season brochure is reproduced. The program of the concert scheduled for 29-30 May describes

the major offerings by Beethoven & Nielsen as “Masterworks,” which they no doubt are; it goes on to describe the other works, by Sibelius and Morawetz, as brief “palate cleansers.” The CMC justifies the inclusion by the fact that Morawetz was a well-known Canadian composer & the Centre’s job is to publicize Canadian music. I have protested that as a Canadian composer I feel insulted. If your music director takes Canadian music seriously enough to program a “brief” example, can your brochure not give it the same respect?-John Beckwith
