TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE CHURCH GATHERS ...
Welcome to Westminster Church! We are a family of Christians gathered from many
traditions and neighborhoods, worshiping here with the goal of connecting faith and life. If
you are a visitor, we pray you will feel welcome and blessed by our worship. We invite you to
consider making Westminster your church home. Please let us have your contact information
so we may be in touch.
Children are welcome in worship here. A nursery is available during the entire service.
When the prelude begins let us quietly prepare for the worship of almighty God.
PRELUDE Fugue in G, BWV 576 J. S. Bach
OPPORTUNITIES AND CONCERNS OF THE CONGREGATION
CALL TO WORSHIP St. Augustine (4th Century)
Leader: O God, full of compassion, I commit and commend myself to you, in
whom I am, and live, and know. Be the goal of my pilgrimage, and my
rest by the way.
People: Let my soul take refuge from the crowding turmoil of worldly
thought beneath the shadow of your wings. Let my heart, this sea of
restless waves, find peace in you, O God.
Leader: Let us worship God!
TO PRAISE AND CONFESS ...
*HYMN NO. 488 (blue hymnal) The God of Abraham Praise Leoni
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)
Merciful God, whose care never ceases, we come to you as we are. We are
tired from trying to do more than we can manage. We are anxious about
problems which go unresolved. We are worried about events beyond our
control. We do not easily let go. For mistakes we cannot redeem, for tasks left
undone, for uncertain goals, we need your forgiveness and ask for your
understanding. For recovery of strength and enthusiasm we pray for your
Spirit. For fullness of life, generous hearts, and contented souls, we pray to be
followers of Christ Jesus. In your mercy, restore us and lead us. Amen.
*KYRIE ELEISON NO. 574 (blue hymnal) arr. David N. Johnson
Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy
upon us.
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Friends, believe the Good News!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Unison) Romans 8:1,28,38,39
We believe there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus; and
we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him,
who are called according to his purpose. We are sure that neither death, nor
life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor
powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE ... The Lord’s Prayer
During the Prayers of the People there will be a time of silence. You are invited to use
this time for personal reflection, confession, thanksgiving, and prayer.
THE OFFERING
Please sign and pass the Friendship Register found on the pew nearest the center

Though many of us contribute electronically or by a check in the mail, your holding and

Christ.

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR TODAY
FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY are given in memory of William E. Elting,
husband of Ginger Elting and in memory of Nancy Carolyn Elting, little daughter of
Bill and Ginger Elting.
OUR THANKS to John Brock for leading the Summer choir and serving as organist
this morning while Peter Van Eenam is away.
ROBERT KING (fl. London, 1676-1728) was a composer, appointed to the Private
Musick of Charles II in 1680, a position he would retain under five monarchs,
becoming composer-in-ordinary under William and Mary in 1689 with a licence to
give or promote public concerts. One biographer points to an Italian influence in his
writing, which is certainly evidenced by this morning’s anthem. The texture is
essentially two treble parts of equal weight with a bassline and continuo (an
accompaniment of chords to reinforce the ensemble).
FAMILY PROMISE PASTA AND BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL TICKETS are available
for purchase today from Gail Clark in the Schilling Gallery. Tickets are $10 for adults,
$5 for children ages 5 to 12 years and children 4 and under are FREE. There is a
maximum of $30 per family. The event will be held on August 20 from 5:00 to 7:30
pm at Central Baptist of Bearden.
SHARE THE BOUNTY: Our Share the Bounty table in the Schilling Gallery
continues throughout the summer. The table provides a space to share produce from
our very own Westminster organic garden and from our personal gardens. What we
have to offer changes each week, so take a look and take some home. There is a
donation basket, with any contributions going to Family Promise of Knoxville.
JUST EDUCATE: program will be held today at 6 pm in the Fellowship Hall. You’re
invited to the premiere showing of the “Just Educate Documentary”. Just Educate is
an initiative begun by Caroline Rowcliffe and Mikaela Faust in an effort to improve
standards for sexuality education. The group advocates for age-appropriate, factual,
comprehensive information taught with a realistic approach to people of all lifestyles
and backgrounds.
TUESDAY MORNING BOOK GROUP: This month we will be reading “H is for
Hawk” by Helen Macdonald. We will meet on August 16 at 10:30 am in the library to
discuss this book. Please join us! For information or questions contact Linda
Rutherford (690-3499).
LADIES LUNCH BUNCH: All ladies of Westminster are invited to gather for lunch
on Thursday, August 18, at 11:30, at Rafferty’s (8906 Kingston Pike and just east of S.
Peters Rd). Young, old or in-between; single or married - all are welcome. It is a time
of fellowship and sharing together. We gather once a month during the school year
on the 3rd Thursday at various restaurants. You order just what you want from the
menu, and everyone pays for their own meal. We sure hope you will come and join
us and we can share about our summer activities. If you can come or want to be put
on the contact list for future gatherings, please call Georgann Byerley at 865-675-5040
or send an email to [email protected] by Tuesday, August 16. Thanks!
