Although the first publishedversion of this song was in Eng-land, there are three older ver-sions of the song in French, andone other version from Scot-land. Therefore, with some peo-ple, there remains debate on theorigin of the song not necessari-ly being English, but French.

In 1842, "The Twelve Days ofChristmas" song was firstrecorded by James O. Halliwell.Boys with blackened faceswearing animal skins accompa-nied him. (See Twelve Lords A-leaping to explain this dance.)

So, how did the idea of 12 daysbegin? Why not the Ten Daysof Christmas or the Fourteen

Days of Christmas? It all goesback to the early 4th centuryChristian church, which be-lieved that January 6(Epiphany) is the date thatChrist was baptized, represent-ing the birth of Jesus' soul. Thiswas more important than De-cember 25th to them, regardlessof the Winter Solstice at thetime. It took a few hundredyears; but, by the 6th century,the Christian emperor, Justin-ian, proclaimed Christmas as apublic holiday, with 8 days offeasting. Then, by the 9th cen-tury, King Alfred of England in-creased the celebration from 8days to 12 days. He declaredDecember 25th - January 6th,with the twelfth day falling onJanuary 6. Note: This means theactual night would be the daybefore on January 5. Confusing,I know.

As with all cultures, as the kingor society prospers, so do thecelebrations. This held true forChristmas also. The MiddlesAges was the peak era for cele-brating Christmas. Then in 17thcentury England, OliverCromwell, under the PuritanCommonwealth, overthrew theking and totally abolishedChristmas!

Slowly, Christmas returned tosociety during the Restorationperiod, but not in such a galamanner as during the MiddleAges. It wasn't until the end ofthe 18th century in England that

a growing interest developedfor the past, one of them beingthe Twelve Days (of Christmascelebrations). By the time theIndustrial Revolution hit Eng-land, the Twelve Days came to adecline due to the increase inwork days. No one had time for12 days of celebration any more.

Note: According to CNN, if youwere to buy all the items in theTwelve Days of Christmas thisyear (2009) it would total$87,000. (Not sure if this in-cludes any sales tax). In 2008 itwas $86,609. The cost went updue to those 5 golden ringscosting more because the priceof gold increased.
