INTROIT— Psalm 78 The People standing

Give ear, my people, to my teaching; Incline your ear to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable And utter hidden lessons of the past. The things we have heard and understood, The things our fathers have told us. These we will not hide from their children But will tell them to the next generation. The glories of the Lord and his might, And the marvelous deeds he has done. He established a decree in Jacob In Israel he set up a law. To our fathers he gave a command To make it known to their children. That the next generation might know it, The children yet to be born.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Lesson: Isaiah 55: 1-3

Thus says the LORD: All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! Why spend your money for what is not bread; your wages for what fails to satisfy? Heed me, and you shall eat well, you shall delight in rich fare. Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life. I will renew with you the everlasting covenant, the benefits assured to David.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

A period of silence follows the reading.

PSALM 145

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. The eyes of all creatures look to you and you give them their food in due time. You open wide your hand, grant the desires of all who live. The Lord is just in all his ways and loving in all his deeds. He is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts.

Epistle: Romans 8: 35. 37-39 Brothers and sisters: What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION —— Stand.

Gospel Lesson: Matthew 14: 13-21 When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me, ” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over— twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children. Gospeler: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

HOMILY

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

all bow during these two lines:

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus,

I believe that you are present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire you in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

As though you were already there,

I embrace you and unite myself wholly to you;

permit not that I should ever be separated from you.

Amen
