September 2011 | vol35NOV 2011, VOL 35 NO 11push n Oodnadatta Track, lake Mungo, White Cliffs, Flinders Ranges, Finke, Alice Springs, Darwin and more, raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. in 2011 June was recognised for her efforts when she received an Order of Australia Medal for her tireless work.

This year was a mammoth effort for June and her band of dedicated volunteers as she had mapped out three rides in one. The riders were given the option of doing one, two or all of three legs of the ride, Broken Hill to Tibooburra, Tibooburra to innamincka or innamincka to Birdsville and return. To do all three required a commitment of seven weeks riding and over 2000 kilometres of mainly gravel or dirt roads. Several riders accepted the challenge of all three rides.

My request to the head of the house to do all three legs was met with a resounding “No” so i opted to join the ride at innamincka, the section i thought would prove the most interesting. Charles Sturt described the area in 1845 as ‘country as i firmly believe has no parallel on earth’s surface’

i headed off with a mate about five days before the ride was scheduled to start and we travelled across NSW via Trundle, Brewarrina, Bourke, Wanaaring, Tibooburra to Cameron Corner before heading through the oil fields to innamincka.

Coopers Creek was an inviting oasis and the yellow belly were on the bite and the long term riders and volunteers had dined well on fresh water fish before our arrival. The pub and Trading Post gave us an opportunity to stock up on last minute (expensive) supplies before i headed off with 24 other riders for what was to become 14 days of riding and three rest days before we returned to innamincka. The route we followed was loosely based on the trip made by the fateful Burke and Wills some 152 years ago.

Six days of riding and bush camping saw our arrival at Birdsville on the Diamantina River, where showers and the chance to wash clothes in a machine

were two of the highlights that followed closely behind fresh bread and real coffee at the Birdsville Bakery. Some of the crew even sampled some refreshing ales at the iconic Birdsville Pub. On our way we had seen flocks of wild budgerigars, dingos, hundreds of corellas and a host of water birds including pelicans. The outback was populated by wildflowers and was looking better than i had ever seen it on my previous five visits. Fortunately, many of the ephemeral water holes along the way held water and provided venues for most of our camps. One highlight of the trip was watching the full moon rise over a billabong 85 km east of Birdsville.

After a welcome 2 rest days at Birdsville we headed east towards Betoota and Haddon Corner for our return home. Both legs of the ride crossed Sturt’s Stony Desert. Once again there were no facilities except bore water and the occasional water hole. On one campsite i discovered the remnants of an Aboriginal work site where i found discarded spear heads and knives that had been chipped away from local and imported rocks. it was quite an experience to realise these people may had camped here for thousands of years in these almost inhospitable surroundings, carrying on their daily lives.

All too soon we were almost back at innamincka and the end of our adventure. Our last night on the track was a camp in a sandy bed of a tributary of Coopers Creek, not far from where Burke and Wills had perished at the “Dig Tree”.

Our last day was a short ride of 45 km into innamincka where we were treated to hot water showers and a great meal at the Hotel, a meal almost as good as those cooked on open fires and camp ovens by our always cheerful band of 7 volunteers. We had seen 985 kilometres of remote Australia by bicycle, witnessed spectacular, sun rises and sun sets, seen a full phase of the moon from desert skies and experienced some iconic parts of Australia at very close quarters, all in the company of a great bunch of people.

Call For Event VolunteerstHe VOluNteerS FOr Spring

Cycle are an amazing group of people that come together to help this great celebration of spring and cycling. the organisation of the event would not be possible without the people like Joe Farrugia and his team from WSCN.

Joe retired from work 6 years ago and noticed an ad in the local paper requiring people to start a new club in his suburb. He quickly rang a couple of friends who also joined the club and they started re-cycle unused bikes, which were to be donated by the public through advertising etc. From the club they got involved with Spring Cycle. The 10 founding members are still active & play a big role in the running of the club and all get involved with Spring Cycle every year.

Joe says, they do it because some of us are retired & we can, the others contribute in other ways. What more can you ask for, we meet great people, get fit, explore new sites, help save the environment and make this great event possible. We meet people from all

walks of life, from accountants, lawyers, teachers, firemen, etc. who travel from all over Sydney to ride with us.

At Spring Cycle the group repair bikes along the way and do the crowd management at Section A, before the participants get to the Harbour Bridge.

"Spring Cycle is an amazing day that we all look forward to every year!" says Joe. Joe’s Club have re-cycled approximately 1590 bikes so they also thank their volunteers and the support from Fairfield City Council.

If you love cycling and want to get involved sign up for Volunteering at Spring Cycle today.

Volunteering at the Spring Cycle is a rewarding experience that allows you to meet new friends, develop new skills and gain the satisfaction of contributing to building bicycle riding in Sydney.

Bullsharks Ride for KidslONg tIMe BICyCle NSW member,

Bill Krause from georges river Bull Sharks, isleading a group of riders riding from Sydney to Cann River, Victoria and back in November 2012 in aid of raising funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

"We will be cycling approx 1130km over 9 days", Bill told PushOn.

Since being formed as an Australian

children’s charity in 1988, the Starlight Children’s Foundation has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their families, throughout Australia.

Starlight provides programs integral to the total care of seriously ill children – while health professionals focus on treating the illness, Starlight is there to lift the spirits of the child, giving them the

opportunity to laugh, play and be a child again.

"Our target goal for the team is to raise $15,000 for the foundation. We are looking for your support, for those that are comfortable and are able to help us meet this goal."

Space for BuGsAs in the past, space will be made available for any BUG that would like to be present at the end of either ride, or both (Pyrmont and Cathy Freeman Park).

BUGs will be co-located with BNSW in a large marquee so as to provide a “one stop shop” for everything related to BUGs and BNSW.

If your BUG would like to take up the offer of a position in the marquee can you please let Tony Henderson know so he can set aside enough space for everyone. [email protected]

The Spring Cycle is a perfect place to advertise your BUG to the wider community and let them know you exist. When you consider that 80% of the riders are not members of BNSW that leaves a lot of people who are ready to find out more about where to ride.

FOr tHOSe WHO believe that cycling on the N Beaches is too challenging, think again!

On 29 July, Warringah Council officially launched its updated Cycling Map Warringah 2012 and opened a new section of shared path from Dee Why to Narrabeen, as the centrepiece of its Greening Warringah day.

The completion of another ‘missing link’ now means there is a 4.4km continuous off-road route from Dee Why Beach to Narrabeen lagoon, which includes 2 new bike ‘lantern’ crossings at busy Pittwater Rd, Dee Why. At Narrabeen lagoon the sealed path links with an existing 4.5km gravel/bush

path to Berry Reserve and Narrabeen shopping centre. The surface is good quality, but suitable mainly for hybrids and mountain bikes.

The expansion of the Warringah Bike Network, means that for the first time, it is now possible to cycle from Manly lagoon to Narrabeen lagoon on a fully marked bike route. The total distance is 16.6km, mostly off-road (12.9km) but including dedicated on-road bike lanes (1.7km) or logos on back streets (2km).

For those who want more, at the southern end of the route one can add 3km of off-road cycling to Manly’s Shelly Beach, while north of Narrabeen, Pittwater Council offers a 4km off-road path to the Warriewood Wetlands. Crucially, there are great coffee shops at numerous locations along the entire route.

Warringah Council has also recently completed two sections of shared path on the western side of Narrabeen lagoon, between Middle Creek and Deep Creek Reserves. By 2014 this path will continue along the lagoon’s edge, via two new bridges and connect with the existing path at Jamieson Park Reserve on the south side of the lagoon. This will provide a complete shared path circuit of 8.5km, which in turn will link seamlessly with the new Narrabeen – Manly route.

There you have it – almost 50km of return cycling on the N Beaches, with 85% off road - and more to come! So get your map from Warringah Council, its libraries, selected bike shops or at www.warringah.nsw.gov.au/community/cyclingmap.aspx - and then on yer bikes...

"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually

are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle."

improvements in cycle access in Macquarie Park, Ryde lGAAlison Pryor, Bike North

MaCquarIe ParK IS a significant employment and retail & education precinct in ryde. a new section of cycle path has been completed along Waterloo rd pushing the Shared user Path along to Macquarie university.

The route was funded by RMS previous years metropolitan routes program – project managed by Ryde Council and constructed by contractors. Bike North members through their participation in Council Bicycle Advisory Committee is were able to give feedback at the design stage, follow-up up by

saddle surveys after construction. We are pleased to see the quality of construction, sign posting etc. like other urban paths there are design constraints of retrofitting a path to existing verge and planning around road crossings, bus shelters etc.

Ride for life supports cancer survivorsThe NSW Cancer Survivors Centre at UNSW will benefit from the Ride for Life fundraising cycling event held recently in Sydney.

The good news is more people are surviving cancer but until recently there was a gap in providing physical and emotional support for survivors, with most patients farewelled at hospital after being told they are cancer-free but still desperately in need of ongoing support.

People in NSW with cancer now have a 64.4 per cent chance of surviving the disease beyond five years of diagnosis, compared with a 49 per survival rate in the 1980s.

Based at UNSW Medicine, the Cancer Survivors Centre is dedicated to cancer survivors and is the first of its kind in Australia to provide clinical services and conduct research for both adults and children.

Rick Christie, the founder of Ride for Life, is a cancer survivor himself and has committed to giving the centre around $50,000 per year for five years. Rick and his wife Vicki survived cancer together, both being diagnosed in 2002.

“Ride for Life has been going for eight years now as a fundraising entity and we have wanted to provide money towards what’s known as survivorship,” Christie says.

“We thought that was an important issue to focus our fundraising efforts on and when we heard about the NSW Cancer Survivors Centre being created, we thought that was a

good thing to support.”

“Cancer survivors experience a range of physical, psychological and lifestyle problems as a consequence of both cancer diagnosis and treatment,” said Centre Director and UNSW Professor Andrew Lloyd.

“Many of these challenges are not adequately addressed by current cancer services and are often outside the expertise of general practitioners,” he says.

Watch the video about the Ride for Life founders and their support of the NSW Cancer Survivors Centre at UNSW.

Cycling skills training as an avenue for advocacy Alison Pryor, Bike North

‘BIKe FOr lIFe’ are the cycling training activities of Bike North. the program had more than 100 participants in Bike North in the last financial year. It has been developed intentionally as part of our cycle advocacy activities in the northern areas of Sydney. the more people who ride confidently, the more cycling appears, and is planned for as a normal, everyday recreation and transport activity. It remains a community focused activity completely run by Bike North volunteer teachers & coaches.

Earlier this year seven Bike North members trained as AustCycle teachers early in the year and Bike North became an AustCycle provider. This has added to members who have their CycleSkill coaching licence from Cycling Australia. Bike North has been able to extend the type of skills courses we conduct. Apart from the direct teaching the program does take some dedicated volunteer effort in terms of event organisation, administration activities and web management to make it all happen.

Essential cycling skills cycle stoping /

starting smoothly, manoeuvring on the bike remains the core program. This program was initially started get riders up to a level of confidence to join a BN easy ride, the easiest of which is about 17km. The skills day is followed up with individual sessions over the next couple of weeks with a teacher on a ride – practicing the core skills in a real cycling environment. Because of the number of teachers/assistant teacher we have able to tailor these session s to level of skill riders already have.

This year we have increased the commuting /on road skills courses and

added a year we added some touring related program s – not surprisingly on a BuG group cycling tour. The latest addition is a monthly very short (10km or less) mid week ride in the BN calendar starting at a Bike Hire centre.

Our next Bike for life skills courses are September 23rd during bike week - at Meadowbank Park.

All of the towns and cities represented at these forums are ideal for bike riding.  The weather is conducive to bike riding, well maybe not in the middle of winter in Orange! or in the middle of the day in summer in Dubbo!!, but for the majority of the year.  The question therefore is why are so few people using a bike to get to work, to go to the library, or do some banking?  in these days of high petrol prices, carbon tax, traffic delays, sustainability, carbon footprint, environmental concerns, surely the idea of riding a bike as a general means of transport is a valid one.  it is interesting

also to find how some councils are very supportive of cycleways, both on and off road, while others are doing little.

The forums have not yet found the answer to the question of how to get people out riding a bike as a means of transport, however it is pleasing to see that the RMS is continuing their support of the project.

Plans are being prepared to hold the next Western Region Forum in Dubbo on Thursday the 29th November.

As the Dubbo BuG representative i guess i am asking that other BuG groups in the Western Region, be it Broken Hill, Mudgee, Wellington, Cowra or any other town west of the Blue Mountains make the effort to attend the next Forum in Dubbo.  The more input we have the more chance there is of finding a solution to getting people out riding their bike.  BNSW has only had a representative at one of the Western Forums, but we are hoping they will have someone attend at Dubbo.

Please feel free to contact me for further information on the Dubbo Forum.

Bicycle NSW – Creating a better environment for cycling

PushOn September 2012 11

Billions in health benefits from targeted climate actionyet another study has come to the conclusion that cycling is good for the nation’s health, environment and economy.

aCtIONS tHat Cut carbon pollution can improve australians’ health and could save billions of dollars and thousands of lives each year, a new report finds.

Our Uncashed Dividend: The Health Benefits of Climate Action is jointly produced by the Climate and Health Alliance (CAHA)—a national coalition of health groups—and The Climate institute. The report is supported by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) and Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA).

The report draws together a large and growing body of evidence from health and medical research showing substantial health benefits linked to measures to cut emissions.

“Evidence from around the world suggests we’re missing out if we don’t cash in on the big health dividend that cutting emissions can deliver,” report author and CAHA Convenor Fiona Armstrong said.

“Cleaner energy, cycling and walking, protecting bushland, energy efficient buildings and low-carbon food choices all contribute to less chronic illnesses, including heart and lung disease, certain cancers, obesity, diabetes, and depression.”

“One recent global study, for instance, found that for every tonne of carbon dioxide they avoid countries

could save an average of $46 in health costs—around twice Australia’s starting price for carbon.”

Armstrong said that few Australians realise just how much the country’s pollution-dependent economy is costing them each year, for example:

☛ Coal-fired power burdens the community with lung, heart, and nervous system diseases costing an estimated $2.6 billion; and

☛ Pollution from cars, trucks and other modes of fossil-fuelled transport racks up a health bill estimated at around $3.3 billion. in Australia, air pollution is thought to kill more people every year than the road toll.

The Climate institute CEO John Connor said: “Climate action can be challenging, but it can be a solutions multiplier, delivering better health, substantial economic savings and improved quality of life.”

“Climate action can mean that people’s health and life expectancy improves, with fewer sick days, fewer visits to the doctor, fewer hospital admissions, reduced use of medication, and increased productivity.”

Our Uncashed Dividend and related materials, including videos, is available at www.caha.org.au and www.climateinstitute.org.au

Life’s better on a bike!

Public feedback wanted on plan to reduce death and injury on our roads

tHe NSW gOVerNMeNt road Safety Strategy for the next 10-years is now available for public

feedback after being released today.  The strategy has been developed

by the NSW Centre for Road Safety after consultation with key road safety stakeholders.

Acting Centre for Road Safety General Manager Marg Prendergast said the strategy outlines where we have come from and suggests what we can all do in future to contribute to reducing death and injury on the road.

“This strategy has been developed to set out a direction and improve both safety and mobility on our roads,” Ms Prendergast said.

“By 2021 we are aiming for a 30 per cent reduction in annual road deaths and serious injury.

“There have been significant improvements in road safety in NSW but we can do more.

“This plan focuses on the areas where fatalities are most prevalent and also looks at how we can address these problems.

“These challenges include reducing speeding on our roads, addressing modern day distractions such as mobile phone usage while driving and crossing the road, increasing heavy vehicle safety and encouraging people to purchase newer and safer vehicles.”

Ms Prendergast said road crashes are still the biggest cause of death for people aged one to 44-years in NSW and cost the community around $5.08 billion in 2011.

“Each year there are around 42,000 recorded road crashes in NSW with

about 400 people killed and more than 26,000 injured,” Ms Prendergast said.

“With the right plans in place and the community’s support we have an opportunity to bring this figure down.”

The Centre for Road Safety is calling on the community to contribute to the draft strategy by visiting http://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/nsw-road-safety-strategy-2012-2021.

Comments will be received though to Monday, 10 September 2012 via email to: [email protected]

it's Not All About the BikeWHeN CONSIderINg laNCe

armstrong's relationship with Nike over the past 15 years, it really hasn't been so much about the bike. It has been about the cancer.

Armstrong was diagnosed with cancer on October 2, 1996. He created The lance Armstrong Foundation on January 8, 1997, with a vague idea about fighting cancer. By the end of 1999, he had the first of seven consecutive Tour wins completed.

And Nike was one of the few sponsors at his side before the cancer was diagnosed and after that first Tour win.

in 2004, Nike created a yellow wristband hoping to sell 5 million of them to support the foundation. instead, 50 million were sold in the first two years. Today, more than 84 million wristbands have been distributed and $100 million raised for cancer awareness.

Nike formed its partnership in 1996, months before Armstrong was diagnosed with cancer. The company reaffirmed its commitment after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Armstrong's refusal to enter an arbitration process would result in his being stripped of his seven Tour de France victories.

Nike doubled down on its relationship with livestrong and Armstrong in 2008, announcing a livestrong Collection of workout and

running apparel and footwear. All profits go to the foundation.

indeed, people shouldn't underestimate the significance of cancer awareness in Nike's commitment to Armstrong and livestrong.

Because for reasons he has not shared in detail publicly, cancer research is among the areas of interest for Nike co-founder Phil Knight. Earlier this year, one of Nike's first employees and a friend of Knight, Geoff Hollister, died of cancer. Jim Riswold, the former Wieden+Kennedy creative director credited with some of Nike's most memorable ads, was diagnosed with cancer years ago.

Knight and his wife Penny have pledged $100 million to the OHSu Knight Cancer institute -- OHSu's largest donation ever. The livestrong Foundation also has contributed to research projects of OHSu scientists.

"lance is a cancer survivor and one of the world's greatest athletes," company chief executive Mark Parker said in 2008. "lance is a symbol of hope against adversity for everyone."

Nike has issued statements saying it still supports Armstrong. And ESPN reported that donations to the foundation after his announcement were up over the same day last year.

Easy on that cakeThe calories in that slice of banana bread (2570kJ*) and a "regular" latte (688kJ*) will need 2.5 hours of cycling at 20kph to avoid gradually adding to your waistline.

Cycling burns around 1500 kJ/hr†, running (at around 10 kph) burns around 1900 kJ/hr†, as does ocean swimming. Mowing the lawn comes in at only 1000 kJ/hr†. I know which one I'll choose! JG(*McDonalds website, †mynewbody.com.au)
